Re: UNdead ?

Thread necromancy for the undead. What kind of undead makes a big difference. Most undead is going to be immune from some aspects of morale, and thus maybe some sort of resistance to cohesion tests might be called for. But different forms of undead are going to respond differently. First, you have t...

These just have the basing to complete. And I have a ma...

Re: Magic and Heroes

MB As for using magic we play with one magic user (if that ) same as generals ( TC,FC IC) for there ranges . TC will get 3 cards ,FC will get 4 cards and ,IC will get 5 cards , hearts = Morale , Clubs = Attack Diamonds = Movement Spades = Defence/ other to cast a spell the MU has to roll a CMT so w...

Re: Magic and Heroes

I realize that it varies by author.

I just find some of it to be arbitrary and silly.... to the point that the "fantasy" loses its charm.

Re: Magic and Heroes

You also forgot the DND and High fantasy worlds (i.e. Xanth) where magic is so plentiful where you could easily just take a unit of longbowmen, name them mages and call it a day. ;) I really consider D&D to be mechanized warfare under a different name. I reject that world, just like I reject Wa...

Magic and Heroes

It has been bothering me for a while that it is so difficult to introduce Magic, and/or the effects of Heroes into the game. We had discussed it earlier, with Heroes being either Commanders with specific capabilities beyond that of a normal Commander, the ability to lead one specific unit, and no ot...

Re: Tal-Elmar (The Wild-men of Gondor and Eriador)

I realize that the very Early Hill-men are going to be not much more than mobs of men with light spear (Probably Average, Unprotected, Undrilled Medium Foot - Light Spear... maybe Swordsmen for clubs, stone or copper axes). But they did have access to metals. It was just hard to come by as all of th...

Re: Tal-Elmar (The Wild-men of Gondor and Eriador)

This is 5,000 to 6,000 years before the events of The Lord of the Rings . I am very aware that most of Tolkien's peoples are based upon the Western Dark Ages. But that becomes a little more problematic when you go back to the First and Second Ages. In the First Age, for instance, the "Easterlin...

Tal-Elmar (The Wild-men of Gondor and Eriador)

Has anyone read The History of Middle-earth, vol. 12: The Peoples of Middle-earth ? It contains a story about the perception of the men living in Middle-earth from the PoV of a boy who is the descendant of a Númenórean woman and a Wild-man (There is some suggestion that the original relationship was...

Re: Wolf Packs and Ogers

I think that I mentioned something to that effect earlier (That Wolves are sort of like Camels in that they can ignore some terrain, and may or may not have adverse effects on Horses - I tend to think not, personally, but Wargs, if they are indeed a completely different animal that typical wolves, m...

Re: Wolf Packs and Ogers

Wolves are terrifically Nimble over all manner of terrain (such as steep mountain slopes and crevasses). This would suggest that they would not be "disordered" in such terrain, indeed, if a "Wolf-Pack" can be said to have ANY ORDER to begin with. In Tolkien's works, Wolves, Werew...

Re: Wolf Packs and Ogers

I would think they would be tremendously better in the Woods, considering that Literary Sources often place them in woods as their setting or home.

The Wolf Attack in The Hobbit was set in woods, and the Wolves had little problems with it.

Re: Wolf Packs and Ogers

Never mind teh comment about ranks with Wolves... I found the notes we had on them, and it says they should get depth, fighting as a mass.

Re: Wolf Packs and Ogers

I have wondered about the "All BGs must be an even number of bases" rule. I know why it came about (mostly because 3 bases of elephants or Scythed Chariots are freaking tough opponents). But I would agree that 3 bases might be better. Is it Knights that only fight one rank deep (Or am I th...

Re: Orcs and Goblins

Considering that the Elves' frontage was just a little over 4 feet, I think that the 4 x 7 table was fine. The Elves would have preferred a smaller area, such as a Thermopylae-like scenario. The armies both fit fine on the table. You are the one who was insinuating that there was some vast expanse i...

Re: Orcs and Goblins

You would be surprised with the difference between a 7 ft and 8 ft table, when you take terrain into consideration.

It can mean the difference between one and two BGs being able to fit into a gap.

Re: Orcs and Goblins

They are 80mm because few 28mm fantasy miniatures will fit on a 60mm frontage. And, many of the figures were WHFB figures, which are mounted on 20x20 bases (making a frontage of 4 = 80mm). And, I doubt that I will ever be using these armies against any other miniatures. But, yes, the extra 20mm a ba...

Re: Orcs and Goblins

Maybe you should be paying attention to the number of bases, and not the number of BGs. That is 116 bases (most of them 80mm x 30mm), on a 7 x 4 table. In approximately two ranks, that's 4.64 meters of frontage. Notice that a 7 x 4 table is a little more than 2 meters across (2.12 meters). That make...

Re: Wolf Packs and Ogers

The reason for Mob is that the behavior of wolves is more similar to a mob than is a Chariot. But considering the speed o ˘¿f wolves, Cav would be a better fit. And, yes, they should probably get multiple ranks in melee. Wolves are both pretty big, smarter than dogs, and can jump huge distances, not...
