Re: Field of Glory II - Holiday 2017 Tournament
Fun tournament. Though I, like a few others have mentioned, would vote for a bit more time per round or at least not start one of the rounds a few days late! Ended up with 3 timed out games (2 in round 4 and 1 in round 3) that were all very close games and a few more turns would have made a big diff...

Re: Anything To Encourage Aggression?
At the end of the day, no one wants to play a game where 2 armies stare at each other even if that did happen in some instances in history. That is kind of the whole point of trying to add some mechanic to urge players to march towards each other and fight. Again, I think there are multiple ways to ...

Re: Anything To Encourage Aggression?
Right but I would argue that in that case Takeda's forces "won" the battle as he and his allies held the Asahiyama fortress and I'd consider him the defender in that case.
There are many historic battles where smaller armies attack larger armies for various reasons.

Re: Anything To Encourage Aggression?
How is it realistic and smart for 2 opposing forces to sit and stare at each other? In history, there would have been an attacking force which would have advanced towards the defender even if they chose to sit in the more favorable terrain.

Re: Anything To Encourage Aggression?
Interesting. So this does seem to be a general problem then. There are lots of different solutions to this problem as well. The fact of both players getting 0 points is pretty lame as that just means whoever is "the bigger man" will most likely attack into an unfavorable situation. The game mechanic...

Anything To Encourage Aggression?
Particularly in MP, is there anything to encourage players to move towards the enemy side if they have beneficial terrain on their side of the map? I just played the first round in the tournament and in both games my enemy mostly sat on their side of the map in beneficial terrain waiting for me to a...

Ah ok. I do remember reading that somewhere but hadn't had it happen in game. Thanks for the quick reply.

Re: Auto-evasion
Are there any other factors besides unit speed, remaining action points, and how disadvantaged they are? I just had a Velite charge a Light Javelin Horse (fragmented) from 2 squares away and it broke the Light Javelin Horse rather than evade. I would think based on the criteria it should have a very...

Re: Confused about the idea of a Quality: Raw unit
They don't have a negative cohesion modifier. They just have to reroll half of their 6s. It is in the manual, but not in detail for each quality level - mainly because Raw, Below Average, Average, Above Average are not single values, but ranges of values, and the adjustment to re-rolls depends on t...

Re: Getting the best out of Triarii?
I tend to use them to protect flanks or second level units to fill gaps. They do well vs cavalry and medium foot but unit size is too small to deal with most heavy foot toe-to-toe.

Re: Confused about the idea of a Quality: Raw unit
Besides -25 PoA, they also have a higher Autobreak threshold than Average units, and also have a negative modifier on cohesion tests. Essentially the probability curve is represented by rolling 2 dice and units have to roll 6 or better after modifiers are accounted for. Raw units have that probabil...

Re: Confused about the idea of a Quality: Raw unit
It seems raw units just have "raw" quality and usually less armor than standard counterparts. I believe "raw quality" is just a level below average which causes -25 POA and slightly worse cohesion checks (not sure if there are other effects). Depending on the unit lists and terrain, raw heavy foot (...

Re: how to play cataphracts
My only issue with cataphracts is that they seem overpriced. The evasion system also seems to make it so they end up running around not fighting a lot in my experience. You can try to use other units to pin down targets but given that cataphracts have limited mobility, its often difficult to get the...

Re: Field of Glory II - Holiday 2017 Tournament
Just wanted to say that the tournament system automatically creating the games for each pair of players is really nice. That saves a lot of confusion and players putting in the wrong settings. Kudos to slitherine for a nice and straightforward system. Only question I had is the rules mention if play...

Re: How to counter the elephant threat in this battle?
Best thing is to probably take the high ground on the left side and delay (avoid engaging as long as possible). If you can tie up his 3 elephants and cavalry (3 generals) while you push the right side then you should be able to get the win. Remember that elephants are unmanuverable so just make sure...

Re: Field of Glory II - Holiday 2017 Tournament
@Muso - Are these pretty standard tournament rules regarding "Round times and timing out"? I haven't played in any of the previous FOG2 tournaments but have played many of PBEM or similar format tournaments for other games. Usually even aggressive timeline tournaments shoot for 1 turn per day as if ...

Re: roguedjack's AI overhaul mod
@roguedjack My experience is similar. I'd also add that most strategy/tactical TBS games don't even play the immediate turn well let alone consider planning out a few turns. The search space often even within the current turn can be very large for many games that have 100s or 1000s of units. That be...
