Re: No raw legions for 3rd century Romans?

The list in FOG 1 did allow for poor, average and superior Cataphracts in the Dominate lists (284-379) The poor ones were utterly useless! Competitively I wouldn't take them, but they were fun for themed games. I don't know if the performance of the late Roman heavy horse can be summed up really wi...

Re: No raw legions for 3rd century Romans?

Not really no. If you feel the list is appropriate then I trust your judgement!

I have a copy of Patrice Southern's book on the the third century but never got around to it. I think I'll move it up the reading list for some perspective on the matter.

Thank you for the response Richard.

No raw legions for 3rd century Romans?

Playing a campaign with them to try out the new clibanarii, and I noticed you can't buy raw troops. They are the only Roman list where this seems to be the case. Could they be added? Some cheap troops are useful for a list with pricey infantry and it seems appropriate for the Romans to have highly v...

Great update! Late antiquity is one of my favourite periods so this really adds flavour to the rome vs goths grudge matches.

Re: New FOG2 DLC?

My interpretation of the snippets we have available in the code is that late medieval pikemen will be something akin to pike and shot keils, ie resistant to flank attacks. The nitty-gritty specifics of that are of course completely up in the air. By the way does anyone know how "keil" is supposed to...

Re: Most "balanced" army lists?

Arab conquest post 636 is worth a look. Competent superior and above average troops if you want to go small. You have bedouin foot, massed archers, and dailami for difficult terrain, and you can spam bedouin horse and protected above average lancers if there is lots of open terrain. And of course yo...

Re: Fiction Book Recommendations

Its not an overly military focused series, although there are some battles, but Gene Wolfe's Soldier series is an interesting very experimental historical novel set during the greco-persian wars about an amnesiac mercenary from Xerxes' army who gets stranded in Greece. It features one of my favourit...

Re: Alternative Gameplay Mod v1.0

Very excited to try the mod! Without having played it yet, reading the current discussions I guess I would just generally caution against over complicating the rules. Obviously you want a more nuanced system than FOG1's and that's fine but just I guess as a reminder that in FOG1 it was just a 2d6 ro...

Would be neat if the initial conditions could be exported as an alphanumeric or something. People could share match-ups/terrain they find particularly interesting.

Re: New FOG2 DLC?

I'm hoping for Medieval. Getting knights into the game is the last piece of the puzzle. Going further back, while worth covering, is more variants on established themes.

How would commanded shot differ from current light infantry that already can perform the role of supporting cavalry and works great when used so too?
Current light infantry don't give charging lancers a 100 POA punch in the mouth when charged.

Re: Commanded shot in FoG2 ? :-)

Although the Julian vs Alemanni historical battle in game has this modelled as light foot interspersed with the horse, this seems like this sort of thing that would generally not be modelled at the current game scale, like how a bunch of the infantry in the decline and fall lists have " includes som...

Re: Anarchy charges poll . . .

Ross Cowan wrote an interesting article called Roman Warriors: The Myth of the Military Machine that was basically an analysis of the Romans' propensity for "barbaric" actions (trophy head-taking, single combat with champions, attacking without orders, threatening to mutiny if they are not allowed t...

Re: Simulation Mode

It was basically a morale test. If you have a shock unit with a valid charge target and you told your unit to do anything other than charge that target then you take a test. Roll 2d6. 7 or better passes for most units. 6 or better passes for drilled units. You get a positive modifier for being in a ...

Re: Tournament mode . . .

I would welcome anarchy charges but personally I don't take these games that seriously so having my FOG1 era raw cataphractarii suddenly feel born-again-hard and obliterate themselves against some spearmen was a source of morbid comedy more than anything else. I can definitely appreciate that others...

Re: Comparing historical and in-game lancer/light spear cavalry

Lancers get 50 points when attacking steady spears, not 0, making them equal to light spear cavalry.
