Here's an idea that could replace the storyline a bit: how about making battles more meaningful, like in the real life, add a kind of commemoration, to celebrate the past glory and triumphs. I still believe the UI would benefit tremendously from having slightly colored "titles" of the various frames. But it's your game and you have to make that decision.

Looks good!
The grasslands seem a bit empty. You might want to add more resources, forests, rivers etc. I remember mirror and arcanus being full of gold, silver, coal, mythril, nightshade.

Ok, the mayor change so far seems the change to hex fields.
This might change combat somwhat. I already saw that in the combat mode the cities are now much larger than the original (I think it was something like 5x5).

This is an extremely badly done makeover. I just made a test turning the titles and buttons into a standard mono blue, without even a color gradient. The graphics have become nicer. The battle field looks still a bit "empty" though. It would help to include more & dense woods, hills, maybe even a river and a bridge.
