Re: Gettysburg: The Tide Turns playtesting - Apply Here!

Hi, I'm an experienced wargamer that was involved in the Battle of the Bulge playtest. My interests have swung heavily towards strategy gaming on the mobile device platform. I've give good honest feedback which I think you've already seen in my comments on the various forums and was happy to help ou...

Re: Map Graphics

I'm inclined to agree. I don't particularly like the Etch Style. The green wooded areas do look more like islands encompassed by a sea rather than land. The Hand Drawn Style is quite good in that it captures the flavour of the period, however I'm not sure if I'd want to be staring at that for any le...

Re: Google Hangout & Big Announcement Feedback

Some interesting arguments. I actually don't see why SS shouldn't have a dabble into the physical wargames market. I don't agree that it's dying, I think there will always be a market and both can live alongside each other. The hardest part to game development is coming up with a good system. If it ...

Re: Play balance

Since the Axis is not advancing, it would not capture fuel from the Allied, but losing fuel to the Allied. The fuel ran low because its panzers were repositioning up and down the front. I would have thought entrenching your armour in defensive positions would consume far less fuel than fighting a f...

Re: Beating an Axis defensive strategy

The Axis assuming a defensive position and not touching the Meuse can be "easily" beaten... On that point I strongly disagree. The Axis defensive strategy is in my opinion the most powerful Axis strategy and the Axis player must either be very unlucky or totally outplayed in order to loos...

Re: Questions for Q&A Google Hangout 7/16/13 at 9pm EST

1) What mechanics (if any) are being taken from Battle of the Bulge? (eg. the impulse system with varying number of turns per day? the calendar to display reinforcements and VPs? 2) Presumably there will be a full 3 day Battle of Gettysburg scenario but are smaller scenarios going to be included lik...

Re: Play balance

In fact, to be very personal, I am quite satisfied with the current game balance because playing as the allied is fun and challenging, and I don't care if I lose. I don't lose much against expert players even. How do you know the players you're beating as Allies are 'experts'? I don't think this is...

The Game System

I was just wondering when we might get a chance to look at the game system and be given the opportunity to discuss it?

Re: Play balance

That's a fair point, but you could try just one. The Axis player will score 10+ VP for St Vith over the course of the game. Eliminate those VPs, and the success rate for the turtling strategy would certainly decline. Why not try it? It's simpler than your suggestions, and it doesn't involve any klu...

Re: Play balance

I agree in general that "do it or else" requirements are not ideal: but the Meuse (and beyond) was actually the Axis objective, so making it a requirement feels more natural than artificial. I agree with this sentiment. I always try to determine what a particular battle from history, at i...

Re: Play balance

Overall, the statistics on balance for game center games is very good. The proposal was intended as a focused solution that would minimize disruption for the majority of players unaffected by turtling: "First do no harm!" Taking broadbrush statistics can lull you into a false sense of sec...

Re: Play balance

We have enough data from 1.2 to draw some conclusions on balance for BotB (the main scenario, excluding variants) as the game stands: the Axis is winning ~54% of the time in GC play. This doesn't feel too lopsided from a pure balance perspective, but conceals the "fun" factor lost through...

Re: Play balance

Bidding isn't the answer. It may make a particular game 'balanced' in the sense that either player now has a relatively equal chance of winning but it doesn't solve the real issue which is the Axis defence strategy is much more powerful than trying to cross the Meuse, which is boring to play as and ...

Re: Question about first move with USA

A lot depends on the results of the initial Axis surprise attacks but generally speaking, given the current state of the metagame and in particular the strength of the Axis defensive strategy, I think it's more important to defend Bastogne. Losing Spa is not nearly as damaging especially if the Alli...

Re: I really like Endgame

Agreed I'm very much enjoying Endgame. The start positions feel a little chaotic for both sides (which is a good thing) as lines of supply are stretched and the way that the areas of control are intermingled makes determining where the front is a bit hazy. I like the fact that one of your initial pr...

Re: Play balance

I have the feeling that Bastogne is the key. If the turtle can be cracked or prevented, it seems that the Allies holding on to Bastogne with its roads and river-free access to clear terrain at Lullange, and then threatening the entire German supply line, is where the strongest threat to the turtle ...

Re: Stategies for a German turtle

Let's say you somehow knew at the start that no matter what you do as the Allied player, the German player was going to employ a "No Meuse" strategy. You don't have to worry about the German auto win, or a Meuse crossing (or even touching) at any time...Given this knowledge, you'd be plac...

Re: Stategies for a German turtle

1) One strategy I've used and seen mentioned elsewhere is to bait the German player. In other words, intentionally leave open or weakly defended positions adjacent to the Meuse. There are some big potential problems with this strategy. For one, this doesn't actually prevent a turtle, but if the Germ...
