Squares and support

We are now playing our first 1st coalition game. Having previously played only SYW games we are unfamiliar with squares and have some questions about them. As a square have no rear it can’t have rear support in combat, so a square in combat against cavalry with rear support will fights with one dice...

Re: Bulding support fire

Thanks. I assume the units in buildings don’t have a defined front and so not support areas.

Battle of Hastenbeck 1757

Those lists are based on the battle of Hastenbeck 1757. We have played various learning SYW games using FOGN with good success, and this should be our first game based on an historical battle. Allied Army. Army commander Cumberland (Skilled) Vanguard: Von Hardenberg. (Competent) 1 x Jaegers: Light i...

Re: 1700 to 1762

We have play various SYW games using both FOGR and FOGN, and FOGN works better. I will even say that by the time of the SYW, linear tactics were quite unsatisfactory. The Prussian, Austrian and French, feel the need to try new tactical systems and FOGN shows that better that more specific XVIII cent...

Re: French Corps D’Observation.

Thanks. At Medina Lasalle division has mounted and infantry troops: 17e Prov, 18e Prov, 10e Chasseurs, 22e Chasseurs, so that’s why I suppose that mixed divisions can be used.

French Corps D’Observation.

Putting up an army for the Battle of Medina de Rioseco, using the French Corps D’Observation list (pag160 Emperors and Eagles) I found two problems. First on Page 160 second bullet says that “mixed divisions MUST not be used” but last one says that “In mixed divisions , attachments MUST be allocated...

Early renaissance games.

We intended to play a series of games based on early renaissance battles. Our first two battles should be based on the year 1476. One is the battle of Toro in Spain, still a “feudal” event, the other the battle of Grandson were the two first modern era armies confronts each other. Battle of Toro Fou...

Re: Second game, first questions!

Thanks Terrys, and one last question. What happens when an action needs more than one CMT e.g an irregular cavalry unit want to assault the front of an enemy unit ( a CMT is needed) and to do so must pass trough friends, (skirmishes of the same division) that needs also a CMT. The move can’t be made...

Re: Second game, first questions!

Thanks Andy that’s what we did, in both cases. Is the French player you know, I play by the book, i.e following historical tactics, but she doesn’t! She makes the more unusual things and more often than not gets good results

Re: Second game, first questions!

Two last questions about obstacles: What happen when the enemy is not in contact with the obstacle, e.g. 4cm away (in 25mm), as there is not enough space you can’t cross the obstacle but can assault across it at the enemy unit? Can a unit be split by an obstacle, e.g a unit in tactical moving along ...

Re: Second game, first questions!

Well we are about to finish. Having by now mastered the basic mechanism, the game has really improved. The impression we have about the rules is really good, they work fast and realistic, even if some recurrent mistakes came and go for time to time. But that was our fault; optimistically we played t...

In my left flank the Brunswick division is going to be assaulted by a French mass. In the right the Hanoverian cavalry has just arrived as is about to...

Re: Board Sections??

3. Asymmetrical games. The other question for me is whether within an era where the basic troop types are pretty much the same how vaild or valuable is an equal points system? I can see in earlier much broader eras where there is much greater variety , the "scissors - paper-stone" element and the h...

Re: Second game, first questions!

Thanks, this time we did correctly at every point, I think I’m beginning to get it. And tomorrow we’ll see if those grenadiers will resist until I can move forward the rest of the line! Losing a second time to the French will be too much, poor Cumberland!

Second game, first questions!

We begin our second game and want to check the following points. A unit in march column can fire? And more specifically: an unreformed unit in march column with skirmishing and artillery attachments can fire at medium range? A light infantry that can be only in skirmishing formation changes to tacti...

Re: And more questions

All is over now (17 to 3) so no more questions for a while. But as I’m boiling whit revenge, we will play again soon. We have jet too much to learn as the game is quite different to the others Fogs but the overall impression was good. Once the basic were mastered, the game looks to be realistic and ...
