Along similar lines, I was thinking about the Classical Greek List the other day and I wondered why anyone would wish to field the Generals as hoplites when they could move faster as cavalry. Why not just have a standard move distance for a General? Base them all as 40 x 40 and give players artistic...

I appreciate that there's been a big increase in feedback traffic recently which combined with Simon's sojourn in Spain has made it harder to keep on top of all of the queries.

Lance and I are playing again on Thursday. Any chance of some guidance on the points we raised please?

Thanks

Pete

Theer is, of course, a good argument that elephant units should be flaky.
True - but some Elephants can be fielded in a BG of 4 bases. My query is why not allow 3 bases as well?

Second Game - and a few more queries.

Lance and I played our Rome vs. Carthage rematch last night. 800 AP 15 mm. As before we found the terrain, scouting and deployment extremely straight forward. I particularly like the terrain. It is totally random and there are few opportunities to construct a position. Lance deployed an infantry win...

But a 2 deep BG turning 90 degrees ends in a block 2 bases wide? Unless there is insufficient room?

So the diagrams you've posted aren't actually right?

I made the same point recently. Elephants, Chariots, Artillery etc would all benefit by being in a BG of 3.

Fielding Ele's in a BG of 2 is highly risky and doesn't last long.

I'm sure the authors will have a view but you could limit any 2nd move within 12 MUs to an Advance or Wheel only?

Thanks for coming back on the queries so quickly. Just wanted to respond on a few points: Cost of Generals. The Romans fielded 1 FC and 2 x TC at a cost of 110 points. The Carthaginians brought an IC and an FC - both compulsory if you go for Hannibal in Italy or Africa, and a TC at a cost of 180 poi...

First Battle Report and Queries

Lance and I had our first game on Thursday - 800 points Romans vs. Carthaginians. Most of the following are joint views but some of them are just from me. Overall impressions were good. Terrain and deployment were clear and straight forward. We played for around 3.5 hours and each had 7 bounds at th...

I think 1 B also... It seems to be an no brainer to go down the token rout. Adjusting the elements within the BG just doesn't work all the time. Games like fire 'n fury etc etc all have appropriate figures counters (ammunition waggon for low ammo etc) I'm sure there are enough wounded / running fig...

Benefits of Light Spear?

Apologies if this has already been asked. Foot armed with a light spear only get a + against troops if there are no other net POAs. So against Impact Foot, the light spears will be on - -? And against most spearmen and heavy weapons at impact, light spears will be on - ? But they always count a POA ...

Initial thoughts from 2 new playtesters

Hello there, This is the first report from Pete Dalby and Lance Flint regarding AOW version 3.07, very much first impressions based largely upon our initial test session. 1. Fantastic that MU`s have been metricated, but with the success of the 40mm "movement unit" in DBR, why not carry it over? A ch...

All valid points. But looking at some of the sample lists there are opportunities to field units of 4 Poor LF - so a BG at a cost of just 8 points? And probably not too hard to hide away out of harm's reach. I struggle to see what value they could add, other than as filler. The nobility would watch ...

Cohesion States

Showing disruption in a multi BG combat can be unclear and others have expressed an intent to use markers to represent cohesion states. Having run through some different combat situations with different formations can I suggest the following simple alternative for your consideration? Disrupted - tur...

Victory & Defeat

If I read P68 correctly, each BG is effectively worth 1 point, irrespective of its size or quality. So for Victory & Defeat, the loss of say 6 Helots, worth 12 points, has the same effect as losing 8 Elite Spartan Hoplites, worth 96 points. The loss of either counts as 2 Attrition Points. Is that re...

Thanks for that. On outflanking you might consider total number of elements or even total value of the force? So if both were equal on units and elements, the higher value, which presumably equates to quality, would push back the opposing flank march? To leave it as just the number of units seems a ...
