Re: Bactrian Empire Campaign 250 BC Gameplay

Not sure if it matters but I thought this was supposed to be an autofill tournament? The game Pete set up was a picked list. I personally don't mind either way, I just wanted to clarify. I am willing to play it out in any case.

Re: Rules tweak and/or avoiding awkward tournament setups.

I managed to catch enough units as the Scythians to get to 41% and force a win. I ended my last turn as the Macedonians with a heartbreakingly close 59% (+12%) so I will be unable to bag the extra 60 points for a chance to place top 3 in the tournament. My issue isn't really with the balance or whet...

Rules tweak and/or avoiding awkward tournament setups.

I just want to post about Round 3 of Tournament #1. I don't know about anyone else but this matchup is thoroughly not enjoyable. I don't think the game or the tournament can fundamentally handle this type of unit mismatch. While I am ahead in both my games, it looks increasingly like atleast one gam...

Re: Whats your Favourite Army and why?

I am finding the light/medium troop swarm lists to be some of the craziest strong armies in the game.

Re: Bactrian Empire Campaign 250 BC Gameplay

Sigh, the uncivilized Nabateans ambushed the Ptolomeic army in some rough hills and refused manly combat in favour of shooting my loyal servants.

All hail Overlord hidde.....for now.

Re: superiority of Pyrrhic army

The early list Romans vs Pike armies definitely have the onus on the Romans executing a more complicated game plan and has a higher skill floor required. Not necessarily unbalanced though. If would be interesting to see a pike vs early Roman matchup in round 3 of a tournament and see how the top ran...

Multiple Charges per turn: WAD? Also Tournament Question

Quick question, I just finished a tournament game where I sent a Cavalry unit that charged a wavering enemy unit in the flank, broke them, pursued into another unit, broke them as well, and then pursued into a 3rd unit and crippled their morale status as well. Thats 3 charges in one turn wrecking 3 ...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

There is of course some truth to this, but the fact is that from what we know of Gallic vs Roman warfare (which is much more than we know about most other types of ancient warfare), Gauls should not be expected to stand up to legions in prolonged melee combat. Still no sources from you with evidenc...

Re: Beyond the Fringe Tournament - ISSUE FIXED

Is setting up a tournament in the game a lot of work? I guess I just don't see why they are so sparse. Clearly the demand is there when you guys are filling 64 players within a day or two.

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

Actually, what I've demonstrated is that "game balance concepts" should be accompanied by the greatest historical fidelity possible. We have been over this before. The "fidelity" is so fuzzy that such a fine tuning is next to impossible. What you are basically asking is not a balance fix, since the...

Re: Generals

Thanks jomni and all others who have commented. So the only extra advantage unmaneovrable units get by being attached to a command, is the ability to group move? This doesn't really amount to a benefit when each unit can still be moved individually if not attached to a command. I also noticed that ...

MikeC, I don't understand or appreciate your apparent need to use insulting, disreptectful language in this discussion..."absurd", ""shred of merit"... OK... Do you know how to conduct a civil, respectful conversation? Is this how you behave all the time? Let's examine your points one by one: I don...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

Pre-cohorte Polybios talks about maniples of principes replacing those of hastati - so smaller bodies than a cohorte. Mind you IIRC Livy has some battles where he talks about whole legiones replacing other legiones, so ... Some modern historians (Goldsworthy for one) have suggested that the 2nd lin...

Re: Generals

Generals did have a sphere of influence of their command in reality this should be reflected by your line of vision and their ability to send out runners to give orders to unit commanders. Also armies almost never moved in small individual cohort sized units but where divided into battles or smalle...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

1) As far as I can tell, this thread is not really about the issue of whether warband armies are over/under-powered, so the various AAR reports are not really on point. There are any number of reasons someone could win a battle vs warbands (especially vs the AI) that have nothing to do with whether...

Quick Warbands vs Hoplite overview

With the long discussion about Warbands potentially being too strong, maybe ahistorically strong despite the fact we actually have little to no data on the interaction between these two types of fighting traditions, I decided to put it the test vs a human. https://i.imgur.com/kvrKrba.jpg The initial...
