Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

We know a very large force of Celts crushed a much smaller force of Roman legions fighting in the classical phalanx (not pikes) style at the battle of Allia. There are little to no tactical details however. Actually, for the Allia we have one very useful one - part of the Gallic army charged the Ro...

Re: Indians are tough?

If anyone has good cost effective options against massed bowman I am all ears. I have been on both sides of the coin and find bowman to be one of the scariest troop types in the game. So far the only thing I can think of is to have skirmishing light troops screen and just eat as much of the arrow f...

Re: Paths & Tracks + switching commands

This is the terrain situation as I understand it. tracks are non-open terrain types. If you mouse over any square, it will say whether it is "open" or not. Open is the key word here. A lot of shock cavalry rely on being in "open" terrain for PoA boosts. However tracks do not count as "rough" terrain...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

Yes, until it has been gamed out. Otherwise you are just commenting from a position of total ignorance. Why would we want to make any changes at all until we have accurate data?[/quote ] I see, so until the "experts" have carefully gamed out every single scenario for months, any other statements ar...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

In my long experience of gaming, the fundamental truth is that it takes a long long time to actually find out if something is truly overpowered and many times what appears to be an imbalance is only caused by the fact that the player base has not yet formulated or mastered the appropriate technique...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

As to the point that it is "too soon to change anything", no one is demanding changes right away, but I do think that it's appropriate for players to raise perceived issues for discussion. Isn't that what gaming forums are for? I have played competitive multiplayer games at various competitive leve...

Re: Pike Phalanx

I do not see anything in the Pike PoA table that suggests that they force a negative modifier on cohesion. Maybe I am mistaken?

Re: Pike Phalanx

Oh I see you are talking over the long haul of multiple attacks. Yes, it will take MANY turns to complete all combats... this was just a clean test... nothing will work like this in an actual battle. That is very useful information, thank you. The fact that you can unwittingly give your opponent ex...

Re: Pike Phalanx

I made a few test run to see the difference between initiating and recieving the charge from warbands and the result is rather clear, you want to initiate the charge as much as possible as long as you can push hard and plug any holes. With 32 units lined up and running it a few times, just one on o...

Re: Multiplayer woes

While I am enjoying the core gameplay tremendously, I must echo the original poster's observation that your interface is unnecessarily obtuse, the multiplayer's interface doubly so. The following things are what I consider urgent additions/fixes for it to meet the standard of a modern game. 1) Namin...

Re: Warbands need a rebalance???

Superior Warbands are among the most expensive units in the game. I wonder if they are overcosted if anything given their propensity to chase and are unmaneurvable. I am also unsure whether there is enough real data to show whether much of anything is or is not unbalanced. The game is less than a m...

If the answer to this question was straightforward, simple or produced a consistent answer, I don't think this would be a very good game.

Re: Armour POAs

This is a game, not a simulation. We do not have enough data to actually simulate ancient warfare. The importance imo of any wargame is to offer a roughly balanced game while honouring the authenticity of the subject matter at hand. I don't think whether up armoring spearmen should be 12 points or ...

Re: Armour POAs

Fair points, Mike. Let's take a look at them. Isn't this what minimum and maximum troop numbers are trying to represent? As I see it, simply by looking at the number limits/requirements of an army you can tell if a given unit is core, auxiliary or rare in that particular army. If the limits are alr...

Re: Battle of Carrhae - Historical Simulation - Good joke

All of which is why I cringe mentally every time I see games advertise themselves as "simulations" of battles, in any period. We still don't know to this day how American Civil War battles were really fought beyond the broad strokes. We have rough ideas given training manuals and first person accoun...
