Triumvirs vs. Republicans

For something a little different we fought a Late Republican Roman Civil War game. Each army is given the same core of Generals and Legionaries. One side, the Republicans gots "eastern" flavored mercenaries/auxiliares while the Triumvirs got "western" flavored. Cassius and Brutus commanded the Repub...

Re: Distances when using 28mm

Hi all, I should say that I have not played FOG yet, just reading the rules, and I cant help thinking that im not going to be happy with the MU distances when using 28mm troops - movement and ranges just seem more towards 15mm. They are geared up for both scales on a 6 x 4 table, which is the commo...

Re: FoG R 500 AP Farnboro Competition reports

Great reports, as always!! Our FoG-R games are usually between 550 and 650 points, depending upon what army we are using and what figures are available. a normal game, with set up and coffee, runs about 2 to 3 hours. We try to get two games in on Saturdays ... And with those points we generally get ...

Army List Question

After all these games this one never quite came up ... Using Mid-Republican Romans as an example; The Hastati/Principes list requires a minimum of 16 bases of averge legionaries. If I want my army to include 16 bases of superior (veteran) Hastati/Principes, can I up grade the 16 average ones or do I...

Re: Early Swedes ... Cannot Be Beat

Gustav beat my a$$ again ... 14-2 ... He laughed at me ... Used a 1643 Pariament army, 14 Bgs (650 points) and was crushed. Dice rolling was bad, had no luck and did I mention I hate salvoe shot. I have sworn off FoG-R for a while. I need some therapy. Next game is Late Republic Roman vs Gallic. Let...

Re: Britcon table size - time for something new?

Of course you could always increase the points sizes of armies. 900pts for singles, 1000pts for doubles This is something that is really needed. I think many more armies become interesting at 900 as they tend to have more to cope with LH for example. In the US our doubles is now 4x8 which is actual...

Re: Attrition points ......again

It is to some extent, however in a non competition scenario it can be frustrating to chase mounted off the table....and in some cases only achieve a draw...... Kind of like Crassus at the battle of Carrhae? Me thinks Crassus wished he had won a draw. The actual battle of Carrhae was a draw for Cras...

Re: Early Swedes ... Cannot Be Beat

I'm going to Cold Wars in a couple of weeks. But not playing the the FoG-R or AM events there. Bummer. Why not? Always interested in trying to change the events into something with greater appeal. 1. Conflicts with other plans during the FoG-R events 2. I don't have any 15mm armies 3. I tried playi...

Re: Early Swedes ... Cannot Be Beat

We have four "regular" players but I doubt all of them will travel. There is a group in Cincinnati that plays as well as some in Columbus. I have a buddy in St. Louis that might be interested too. Maybe you can start a topic and see what kind of interest there is. I'm going to Cold Wars in a couple ...

Swedes win .... again ... Saturday saw the return of Gustav and 650 points of his Swedish minions take on Rupert and 650 late Royalists. I took some photos, but I can't figure out my stupid Blackberry ... shocking ... Gustav (GC), 2 TCs, Finnish elite horse, Swedish average horse, a BG of superior ...

Re: Re:

And, as pointed out earlier, you can't prove me wrong any more that I can prove I'm right. True but no one will ever take notice of your arguement if you keep adding this to the bottom of your theory. And it is utter balderdash anyway - you only have to read a few of the better documented ancient/m...

The one weakeness of the moving down to 650 is a lot of army lists weren't drafted with that in mind. They were - because 650 was what we deemed to be a suitable size for 28mm on 6 x 4 tables. .............. Most of our games fall into the 650 point/6x4 table variety. We also use 1" = 1MU. I feel t...

I paint the shields white. Then cut out the shield transfer with a knife. Apply it to the very-very dried shield and then I use the hard end of a paint brush to rub over the plastic top of the transfer. The plastic will peal back ... all done. Then glue the shield onto the model and touch up edges o...

We play Germans against Principate Romans and it gives a good game ... Better if you use legionaries without SW. On a 6x4 table (28mm) there are a lot of Germans. I like 8's for German warriors, at least under v1. I don't understand you guys sometimes. I know this is a tournament oriented gang. But ...

Also work fine in 25mm on a 6x4 table (and presumably in 15mm on a table relatively that size) in a more open comp IMO. ............ 650 points (28mm) on a 6x4 table is a great game for Principate Romans. While we don't play too far out of period, they have a competitive chance in all our games. If...

Your painting is beautiful. If I was painting and basing the miniatures for a diorama or somthing like that I would agree that the bases are as important as the figures. But for gaming, I prefer a much simpler basing style. Too much on the base distracts from the painted models. A little sand and dr...

Speaking of the evil Gustav army list; I don't have his list and he tweeks it from time to time but it is usually something like this: Gustav: GC 2x TC 1 Swedish Cavalry (superior) 1x Finnish Cavalry (superior) 1x German Kuirassier (superior) 1x Veteran Foot (superior) 2x Other Foot (average) 1x Med...

We have been playing 650 FoG-AM on 6x4 tables (28mm) and many of the problems with FoG tend to go away. But, a 650 point FoG-R army tends to take up more room length-wise than a similar AM army. So we usually go with 8x4 for 650 point R games. We stay with the 4 foot table width for both games. We u...
