Hi Bill

I can't open the battle because I think you failed to leave the army choice open to all books - it only gives me a choice of SOA armies in response... I'll put up the battle again with your name "BillMc" as password...

Re: Looks like a screaming contest has started...:)

...And even if you did start to "scream", why should it bother anyone else? You could even take a massive leap and use a bigger font like stockwellpete - who also apparently broke some unwritten law on another thread! :)

ALEXANDRIAN BATTLES - 2nd SERIES GABAI AND THE HYDASPES

Two more Alexandrian encounters. HYDASPES.... The Macedonian army has expanded to include more asiatic elements such as horse archers and elephants. In this version of the Hydaspes, Alexander's opponent Poros has at his disposal some of the Assaceni mercenaries who defended Massaga so heroically, as...

The main difference is the Persian order of battle, which contains more light troops [especially light horse] and a higher proportion of mob-type levies, giving it more staying powe...

Re: THREE CLASSIC ALEXANDRIAN ENCOUNTERS!

Another factor I've tried to key is the progression of Persian military thinking. The cavalry arm clearly gets heavier and heavier during the war against Alexander. The lance is taken up, horse and rider start to become cataphracted, the proportion of horse to infantry increases. It connects to the ...

Re: THREE CLASSIC ALEXANDRIAN ENCOUNTERS!

Thanks! Yes the Granicus and Gaugamela are difficult ones to model. Hard to get the right balance between the Macedonians and Persians. I like to use large maps to give players ample time to maneuver before contact, and this helps the Persian side especially at Gaugamela. Also I don't think the bala...

THREE CLASSIC ALEXANDRIAN ENCOUNTERS!

These scenarios for the battles of the Granicus, Issus and Gaugamela have all been extensively play-tested to ensure playability and interest for both sides. The Hydaspes [Alexander -vs- Pauravans], Gabai [Alexander -vs- the Eastern satrapies] and the Persian Gate [Alexander -vs- Persians in a Therm...

Re: CARRHAE REVISITED!

Especially so in battles with bow armed horse. In reality the Romans could never win with the unlimited retreat-ability of the parthian horse archers [no map edges!]

CARRHAE REVISITED!

A more interesting "What if?" version of the Battle of Carrhae with the Armenian king Arastvades arriving to relieve Crassus. Can the Parthians keep the allied Roman forces split and defeat them in detail?
