Re: Are Elephants viable in V2?

Perhaps chariots should be in 2 base BG for the same reason then. ^this. Practically speaking elephants are not terribly different form Superior Knights and they are not over-powering in 4s (or 6s!). I think this is one where the early play testing showed and issue that in retrospect just isn't tha...

Re: Are Elephants viable in V2?

Your point is well made though that the various elephant forces of antiquity did perfrom different roles and it would be better if there were rules to reflect that. A Burmese elephant with a dozen bow crew is not going to do the same job as a macedonian elephant with a single pikeman. Yep. I think ...

Re: Light foot - huah...

Another useful quality of LF is that you can shoot through them with Artillery and often the LF shooting added to the Artillery fire can have significant extra impact. This is there great value. You can skirmish the enemy center with them and still shoot your artillery. IMO LF are a must if you are...

Re: Mapuche pike rules: suitable for Japanese nagae-yari?

I don't think the Samurai would actually be better off as two rank only pike instead of spear given the way the PoAs work.

Re: Suggested amendments

This suggests another possible solution if you want to keep the ability of commanded shot to have regimental guns. You could add a rule something like "regimental guns cannot contribute more than 1 dice per 3 dice of shooting from other sources" on a target. So if you have 2 commanded shot units eac...

Re: Artillery and mounted

A bit late to this discussion... but a couple of thoughts: - When you have a small amount of artillery, say two bases, putting it on a flank to shoot at mounted seems to make the most sense. - Small amounts of artillery in the center just are in the way, they can't shoot over your own troops which a...

What is not historical is using Swedish commanded shot supported by artillery fire (at three times the density of artillery fire that a swedish brigade could muster) as your primary anti-infantry strike force.

Re: Suggested amendments

For the attached shot, I will admitt they arehelpfull but very very brittle . never forget that . That it is a viable tactic, even if it were marginally viable, is IMO bad for the game. It encourages extremely ahistorical play with little hunter killer columns of commanded shot - which are supposed...

Re: Armies: Better and worse under V2

Elephants are a winner in the sense of been slightly better than before but they are still pretty bad. I have played 3 V2 games with an army with 2 BG's of elephants. They are yet to win a frontal combat with anything. I've got them (undisrupted) into knights, a 6 element units of LB, spearmen, etc...

Re: Armies: Better and worse under V2

I think elephants are the big winners, in V 2.0 I suspect they are strong enough at impact to warrant building around.

Re: Suggested amendments

2) The commanded shot hunter killer issue can be largely resolved by making them Musket rather than Salvo. Alternatively a more general rule might be added to the effect that commanded shot must be deployed in contact with mounted troops or in non-open terrain. Also 2 base commanded shot BG should ...

Re: elephants

This still leaves the issue of covering Eastern/Indian warfare in which huge numbers of elephants were used. A quick look at the army lists and we can see the Ghaznavids "noted for their use of elephants" with numbers in the 1,300 to 1,600 range being given. Clearly they are being use en masse here ...

Re: Field of Glory goes 2.0 !

"This is a Roman theme - all the tables will be pretty legionary friendly, this is what that means..." is a great way of cutting down on the counter-programming that IMO plagues theme comps. Or this is a steppe theme, all the tables are pretty steppe-like, don't whine when you show up with heavy in...

Re: Medieval

Could maybe give longbow a bit more range to differentiate it more from the Crossbows (which were totally outclassed by the advent of the longbow if I remember my history correctly). Always thought it a bit strange that longbows were given the same range as normal bows to be honest. The effectivene...

Re: Medieval

I think Xbows are at a +PoA against armoured cavalry. This makes crusader xbows actually useful against Easter armoured cavalry - but will have little impact in Western Europe.

Re: Field of Glory goes 2.0 !

why not one or two Steppe tables? I think it is quite important to give some clear guidance and there is a lot of value in doing "themed" tables if you will. If you do "well there will be 1-2 steppe tables, 1-2 heavy terrain tables and a bunch of sort of moderate ones" you really haven't told anyon...

Re: elephants

I think the 3 dice at impact elephants are pretty interesting. They may not be hugely powerful, but they will be a decent value and definitely see more use. This is among the simplest and best changes in 2.0.

Re: Mixed Impetuous & shooting mounted

You have to treat them as lancers alone. The bows are moderately useful when facing skirmishers as they allow you to respond in kind and then charge.
