Re: Play Test

We re-fought most of Flodden today using the same armies as before and didn't get a decisive result due to time but it was heading for an English win. Should hope so too with the Scots pike bogged down as usual. Autobreak rules did not kick in at all as unit breaks came from failed CT not base losse...

Re: Points Values - the whole damn lot

In respect of the Tuareg Camels I don't recall many complaints about them previously And is all this because of the result from one competition where some of the match ups were possibly pure fantasy? Please correct me otherwise as my grasp of North African history is not particularly robust( I don'...

Re: Southern League FOGR 2017 at Southampton

To get the ball rolling nice and early we have the following confirmed from the local area: Brendan Morrissey Patrick Morrissey David Hewkin Mark Littleton-Gray Brian Hooker Dave Edwards Steve Basting David Egglestone Plus from the more successful away team of last year: Ray Boyles Keith Spedding Bo...

Re: Points Values - the whole damn lot

Suggestions?
Seems to me that open competitions are the problem not the rules. Tighten up the themes but I suspect I am an old fossil who just does historical match ups.

In a competition that had any army from any book. That is the problem from my non-competitive point of view.

The Mrs's Birthday that weekend, not a chance I'll make it! Sorry!
Well you knew that date, hopefully without checking the diary, so no need to apologise :D

Southern League FOGR 2017 at Southampton

I am pleased to announce that we will be running the Southampton round of the Southern League again this year on Sunday September 24th. Pretty much the same format as last year but with a change of venue due to availability issues with last years site. • FOGR 15mm 800 points • Format - 3 x 2hr 30min...

Re: Updates - where we are at

Playtesting and feedback may throw up some anomalies and avoid breaking what is essentially a very good ruleset. Publish the errata and let people start playing and feeding back but I doubt there will be a universal take up of all the changes. As I said to Nik right at the start some players will ac...

Re: Better Armour - proposal (updated)

Finally got a Flodden refight booked so will get back to you about that but I suspect I am the lone voice in the wilderness not happy about armour changes and autobreaks. Hey ho, it's only a game.

Re: Bows

And are all bows Mary Rose Longbows? And even using longbows as your benchmark, do we actually have head to head encounters to say they "outranged" or "outshot" the contemporary firearms, or are we talking theoretical capabilities? Under FOGR a bow is a bow and reliant on muscle power and the healt...

Re: Points Values - the whole damn lot

If Sup to Elite gap was too small make Elites punishingly expensive and hopefully the person with the view will take time to consider how we can fix what he thinks in wrong and maybe he will see it perhaps ain't. The point I was trying to make is that due to the change in autobreak levels the only ...

Re: Bows

Sorry I'm with Don on this. It was about "training" in as much as the physical attributes of a longbowman took years to develop(see the Mary Rose skeletons) hence all the mandatory training on the village green and the banning of football and other recreations. An arquebusier could be trained in a m...

Re: Colunelas

Dead and buried but still annoying so to get this off my chest. If we changed to "two files" it would also mitigate the quite common redeploying a 6 pack P&S, forms column and then travels parallel to artillery but is still a juicy target as three deep. Plus, back to colunelas. A colunela is next to...

Re: Bows

So, this may be a loaded question, but does making Bows a bit worse in a situation that's already bad for them outweigh the benefits of 1 and 2? No. This is the trouble with a set of rules covering "the Renaissance" world wide. Some things won't quite work for everything perfectly but as long as mo...

Re: Points Values - the whole damn lot

Said this before but I think you need to close the gap in points between Sup and Avg and Poor. To keep this simple the foot points have not changed from originally published yet Elites retain the advantages of old whereas Superiors keep re-rolls but the autobreak difference is either non-existent or...

Re: Cavalry - a package of proposals

There are not huge numbers of cavalry in the early Pike period, a couple of BG at most excepting the Italian armies and if you want to slow down the infantry there are lots more LH who can already do this better and I don't see it that often.

Who said that was an object?
Holding the FOGR community together on a set of common rules might be a more realsitic objective but I think we will see a splintering effect.

Re: Play Test

the differential between Average and Superior not so great and I suspect will not really impact historical refights much. I really need to find the time to re-fight Flodden and soon as I think the changes to armour and autobreak will make it far harder for the English, who have won both re-fights t...

Re: Better Armour - proposal (updated)

I thought Poor troops would re-roll 5's and 6's as mentioned above. The whole idea being to reduce hits against the better armoured opponent.
