Re: Nestor's Spearmen

I usually anchor one flank with Nestor and keep the other with a good portion of chariots but not an attacking wing. The attacking is done by the infantry as offensive Spears(in FOGAM) are pretty good against most historical opponents. Further strengthen the line with the Myrmidons and one dismounte...

Re: Potential Dates for 'Way of The Warriors' 2017

What about the rules upgrades? Not thinking about this tourney in particular but what do people think in general about the rules changes and competitions? My own thought would be play under the current rules for 2017 comps to get a good period of non-comp play experience tested for anomalies and un...

Re: Better Armour - proposal (updated)

Any similar interactions? Not that I can think of at the moment but the only reason Flodden came up is that we re-fought it a couple of times. Give me a couple of years and I will see how many other historical re-fights I can put together and report back :) BTW, for those who dislike the re-rolls c...

Re: Better Armour - proposal (updated)

the enemy will not be affected in what they do if you have better armour.
So even if they win or draw more heavily armoured troops will take more casualties than previously which was, and remains, my bugbear about this as you know.

Re: Play Test

Combats involving average troops (and there were a lot of these) went on longer, lengthening the game, although it would have been a long game anyway due to the different nature of the armies. Same as we found on Saturday with combats taking longer. Russian Horse was held up for a couple of bounds ...

Re: Cavalry turning and moving backwards in one turn?

I think it was a good thing for FOGAM as it better replicated the tactics of falling back from the enemy rather than waiting until the enemy are the proverbial "gnats todger" away then gambling on the evade. And it was not a given but a CMT so still chances for them to be caught and moreso in FOGR w...

Re: Updates - where we are at

Not quite that bad. Scots lose 7 and break in RAW but 9 modified at the moment. I have no real problem with most of the changes but Autobreak levels and Armour look likely to be where they founder for me. And I think it will all be moot anyway as most players at the club don't see the need for chang...

Re: Dragoons - proposal

Well, my dragoons have always been nothing but useless so this gives me a good excuse not to use them at all which means they will indeed have a very limited battlefield role :)

Re: Captured Artillery - proposal

The option to recrew is historical but I think in six years of playing done it once so game triumphs over simulation. Happy with that.

Re: Better Armour - proposal (updated)

Is there a specific Foot interaction that you think would be irreparably affected? Just the Flodden thing again. Your revised amendment makes the HA Bill "slightly worse off in even or better situations." That combined with the new, even just revised, autobreak rule makes it much more difficult for...

Re: Better Armour - proposal (updated)

Is this because you think there are specific examples where the interaction will no longer work, or a more general it is changing something you are happy with as it stands? I can actually see where people are coming from in respect of the mounted armour issue, especially the classic DH vs Cuirassie...

Re: Better Armour - proposal (updated)

Much as you won't like it I think the solution has to be mounted only. The global fix only appears to work by messing with infantry interactions which appear to be OK. Trying to think of something but in the meantime, is there an issue with Example 3 or is it there just as an example because I'm thi...

Re: Superior only mounted

A lot of the time when drawing up the lists we probably erred upwards for quality If you erred up in quality why are the D&G lists being given the option of 1 in 3 Superiors? If Average was erring up why Superiors at all and are they needed if your Average proposals go through? Just being Devils Ad...

Re: Dragoons - proposal

Agreed about the marker but as I mentioned does he have a point that after the first couple of turns what you have is a not terribly effective unit of medium foot?

Or maybe that's the idea?

Re: Dragoons - proposal

Just an additional viewpoint about dragoons from a fellow Wessex player who does not frequent these forums: If Dragoons are to count as dismounted once they get to 6 MU’s of the enemy, then they remain so for the rest of the game. Alternatively a Marker should be left at the point where the Dragoons...

Re: Updates - where we are at

Vespasian28: The new Autobreak levels had a mixed reception but only one person was completely averse to the idea which happened to be me. Nik Gaukroger: Anything specific in the mix, or just not sure it is really needed? I just think expecting Poor and Average troops to take 50% or more losses is t...

Re: Updates - where we are at

Just got back from the club and managed to get a chat in with eight FOGR players; there were three actual FOGR games going on out of the dozen or so being played. Not enough time to have a proper discussion and I think people want to take the time to give the proposals more thought so this is vey mu...
