Re: New Yorker Article on Linothorax armor

What this chap has created sounds a little like te body armour of the central american military pre Columbuse. Theirs was similarly padded (albeit with cotton) fabric armour. It worked fine against local weapons - which tended to be slashing or crushing in their use - but poorly against Spanish ste...

Re: Impact/melee.. Mixed terrian

Which rules are applied depends on where the front edge of the defenders is. It has nothing to do with who charged.

Re: General in the Front Rank

Pete, nothing in the rules contradicts Dave, and the rest backs him up. Unfortunately He is in the front rank but not in close combat And the rule on page 106 says: A commander who is fighting in the front rank can only influence the complex move test of cohesion tests of the battle group he is wit...

Re: General in the Front Rank

Your reading is certainly reasonable, but consider: that quote from page 105 says he can't leave the front rank, so he's still in the front rank while pursuing. Agreed? Page 106 says 'fighting in the front rank', not 'fighting in close combat'. When pursuing routers he is still fighting in the front...

Re: Declaration of gharge question

It doesn't seem unreasonable from a real-world POV - if the cavalry can be contacted by a step forward, they must be pretty close to their LH, and in the confusion of the Light Horse evading would make interception difficult. More to the point, why do they need to intercept? The chargers are sitting...

Re: Shifting to FOG 2

The main change from v1 to v2 was to make skirmishers a bit less powerful, and make it a bit harder for units to dance around. The impact phase was made more important. I'd say both of those improve the historical value of the rules. I suspect the comment from Eques is because the Romans have been m...

Disrupt the pikes with shooting before you start melee, then they are no longer steady and you will beat them

Re: a charge legal or not legal?

Yes, you are right - v2 changed it from number of bases to number of dice.
I can't imagine there are many circumstance where it makes a difference, but I seem to recall someone pointing one out; I guess if must involve a mixed unit with HF and LF or something like that.

Re: a charge legal or not legal?

Is the question whether you are allowed to wheel as part of a charge? If so, then the answer is yes, so long as you start more than 1MU away. If the question is can you set up the charge direction so that it wouldn't contact the target, then the answer is no, of course not, because then it's not a c...

Re: Armour in combat

Reconstructing Ancient Linen Body Armour provides a plausible means of constructing linen armour for the Greeks and tests conducted by the authors do seem to show that it would approximately as effective against contemporary weapons as would bronze armour of the period, and almost certainly more co...

Re: Armour in combat

The point about the significance of the hoplite shield is well made of course. It was big and heavy by many era's standards ( the early Roman shield is comparable in those terms) but I guess one has to look at the whole package in the panoply "cap a pied" when setting the level of compara...

Intercepts happen before evades - check the full turn sequence. So looks like the cats could intercept.

Re: At 2 dice per base are knights overpowered in the melee?

Contemporaries writing at the time of the Crusades thought that knights were much better than other cavalry in the charge, hence Anna Comnena's comment about the Franks being able to charge down the walls of Jerusalem. As you observe,, their equipment was not that different to their Muslim counterpa...

This is something that always puzzled me, but thought..."it's only a game and historical matchups usually sort things out" But in an open game running WOTR or 100 yrs war knights ,for example, I would feel a little ripped off vis a vis the 11th to 13th Century Knights. Robkhan Why would y...

Re: FOG Renaissance.

Thanks’. About the Elves: They are probably one of principal races to be balanced, as in FOGAM longbow + superior make them too expensive and powerful. In FOGR with bow, even with superior or elite status they would be more playable and the army will gain a certain decadent aspect! About magic, I a...

Re: V2 Hoplites vs Spara Bara

When we refought Plataea using FoG v1 a few years back it was a narrow Greek victory; it was touch and go, though.
The Athenians lost to the Thebans, and the Persians looked like they might break through, but the Spartans beat the Immortals just in time.
We'll have to try it again using v2.
