I've been playing PC wargames for 25 years and have NEVER found a game with good AI, including BA, it just can't be done. That's why there are thriving play-by-email and TCP/IP communities out there for all sorts of wargames, and no doubt in time that'll apply to BA too as its fan base grows.. Reme...

Disappointed with the AI
I bought the game today and have played a few battles in the North Africa campaign and I have to say that I find the AI really disappointing so far. For example, in the fortress battle, the AI just seems to charge AT guns and run into point blank range of infantry. There doesn't appear to be any att...

We'll see if we can add an opt out in the user profile section. It was not something we even considered - we thought people would love it :) I think a ranking is only fun if it provides a fair representation of your skill at the game. Like someone else mentioned, sometimes they mess around with sce...

Rankings and scenario design
Do the rankings include custom games or only out of the box games?
As a scenario designer I play test my scenarios a lot, and I get quite a few defeats as I try and give them a knife-edge balance. Looking at my stats it looks like these are included in the rankings.

The AI tended to dither about abit and didnt take the option to try and envelope me with forces behind the front line. I've tried lots of different ways to solve this (including different map configurations), but if the Spartans move up the map the flankers dither. I may replace them with even stur...

Re: Spartans forever!
Hi! I played with the Spartans and pulled back till the area where they can defend themselves easily! To help me with designing the next version, where did you pull back to? The decision I'm trying to force is the one Leonidas had to make: stay back where the pass is narrow to defend against the ma...

So you mean the AI is smart enough not to blindly charge weak troops against elite troops? That's certainly one theory I'm working on to explain the AI's behaviour. Sometimes they just mill around rather than moving forward. Sometimes it looks like they are waiting for the main body of troops to ge...

Thanks. I've spent today working out how to best buff the Persians, and also make them attack more decisively: I think the position of the flanking force, along with the impassible terrain, is confusing the AI, and the flankers are not going as hard at the Spartans as I would like. Also, even with i...

Thermopylae 480BC - Scenario (version 1.0, 5 Jan 10)
This small scenario (7 Greek units vs lots of cyber-Persians) reproduces the final stages of the Battle of Thermopylae. The massively outnumbered Greeks have successfully prevented Emperor Xerxes' Persians from progressing to Athens for two days by holding them at the narrow pass at Thermopylae. But...

Cheers. I just tested it out but it doesn't show the casualty calculation. For example I charged a roman cavalry (at 100%) head on into barbarian mf (at 100%) and scored 3 hits with the impact combat which has a maximum range of 9% but I inflicted 17%. The conversion from number of hits to a % of l...

Re: the role of luck?
i find the impact/melee combat results totally unpredictable. Sometimes, in the same situatione one gets wildly disparate results (e.g. attacker loses 150 defender 10 and then between similar units nearby attacker loses 10 and crushes defender). is combat so heavily dependent on luck? From the rule...

TUNIS 255: BALANCED - SCENARIO
I really like the Tunis scenario as it produces a good battle between two quite different types of armies: at its heart, armoured infantry versus elephants and cavalry. The Romans are out-gunned in the original scenario, although they can win. However, I thought I'd produce a balanced version with e...
