Re: Best Infantry Unit discussion
One more thing: while 43 Gebirgsjaeger isn't as good as 43 Inf in my view, they are still pretty useful because there are many maps with mountainous terrain. I have 4 x 43 Gebirgsjaeger battalions in my current GC43E playthrough.

Re: Best Infantry Unit discussion
I also think regular infantry is the default choice for the 43 upgrade. 43 Gebirgsjager isn't as good as 43 Wehr Inf in my opinion because of its weaker HA and GD. Yes, the Gebirgsjager has higher AD, but infantry should be in close terrain most of (if not all) the time beginning in 1942, and close ...

Re: Converting SE slots into Core slots?
Also, SE units often mess up my unit count during the deployment phase. I would either under-deploy because I forgot that some units are SE, or over-deploy because I thought wrongly that a core unit was an SE unit. With my planned mod, such an issue should go away; my dodgy maths will still persist!

Re: Converting SE slots into Core slots?
@Jagdpanzer IV: SE units are nice because they are more powerful than their core equivalent, they are free, and they are not covered by soft cap. I'm the type of player that wants to plan my core deployment in detail, including figuring out in which scenario I want to add what type of unit. The rand...

Converting SE slots into Core slots?
I've been toying with the idea of a GC playthrough with no SE units. However, there is a twist: I want the additional slots that come with SE units, but not the enhanced attack stats and ammo. (This will be a playthrough with no softcap). So, I would like to know if there is a modding solution to co...

Re: Grand Campaign progress question
Wow, not incurring losses on any scenario is impressive. Modlin and Spoils of War tend to be painful for my core. @Hedge90: for what its worth, I concluded my most recent GC39 playthrough with 9090 pp and 35 core units. Achieved DV in every scenario. Difficulty is General but I do not keep scripted ...

Re: Most useless heroes...
@proline: yup, learnt that lesson about aggressive moves. I typically use tank or AT units with movement heroes for guarding flanks and back them up with some arty or AA. Pioneers and grenadiers/HW inf with movement heroes are great. Have not had much luck in my current playthrough. Out of 12 infant...

Re: Most useless heroes...
I don't mind a movement hero on a tank or anti-tank unit, though. An anti-tank unit with movement +1 is a good candidate for upgrading to an Elefant; a tank with movement + 1 can be upgraded to Tiger II. I just prefer AFVs to have 5 or more moves.

Re: Most useless heroes...
Yeah, spotting heroes on artillery units are a total waste. I've got a spotting hero on a 17cm K18 during Oboyan. I tend to use recon units in my playthroughs, so I don't really like spotting heroes for non-recon units.

Re: Tactical bomber effectivity
GC41 Rudel definitely makes the stuka shine! The value of the fighter bombers (Me 110, 410, Fw-190F/G) is their versatility. They can do air and ground attacks, but do not excel at either. Thus, their performance in either attack category is mediocre. In my previous playthrough of GC East, in which ...

Re: Defensive Artillery
Yes, the StuH 42's high SA is pretty good. I really wanted to upgrade my StuG IIIB's to StuH 42, but the StuH 42's stats are not a good fit for my current corps and play style. I have enough alternatives to suppressing soft targets (10.5cm leFH, K18, Wufrahmen, strategic bombers) and don't really ne...

Re: Defensive Artillery
Here's the ROF from the equipment file: StuG IIIB: 11 StuH 42: 10 [the default setting for artillery, represented with a blank in the ROF column] Brummbar: 8 The StuG IIIB is indeed an excellent self-propelled artillery piece for defensive fire support, especially in 40 and 41 when the panzers and P...

Re: Things I would like to see fixed
I've switched to dice chess for my current playthrough as well. I do think it is possible to incorporate experience mechanics into a graphical depiction of predicted combat outcomes. Before going into that, I think there should be a base level of randomness based on equipment/unit type, terrain, and...

Re: Things I would like to see fixed
@proline, you make an eloquent argument for incorporating randomness, and I think that is a good gaming element in principle. However, I don't think the devs have implemented randomness well in terms of visual representation. If combat results follow a random distribution (e.g., a bell curve), then ...

Re: Things I would like to see fixed
Dave, 1) Completely agree that on random setting, the combat predictions are misleading, if not downright useless. I think it's more honest not to provide the predictions if a player is playing on random. 2) As for retreat rules, check out the FAQ section where you will find a number of threads on r...

Re: Questions For Playing at Field Marshal Level
Before 1942, recon could probably be in the front line and reasonably survive. That's certainly the case in 39-40. In my GC42 East playthrough, recon units become more vulnerable and staying visibly at the front will almost guarantee significant damage, if not outright destruction. Even guarding fla...
