We played this scenario at our club on the 8th December. This was a very fun game and a well spent day among a bunch of palls.

In this game, Vasco stayed with the Imperial left, facing João Especial; João Costa was with the Imperial right, facing Miguel; and I stood at the Imperial centre, facing José “Lucky Dice” Lopes.

The Heretics opened hostilities by sending a lonely knight to insult his opponent’s Bavarian sausages and Bohemian beer. This sort of insults, of course, couldn’t stay unanswered so the fight started at once!

The Protestants made the first move and in no time the Swedish started to give the Spanish a hard time. These, in their turn, advanced along the hill to dislodge the Swedish musketeers in the woods. João Especial and his guns seemed unstoppable and the Spanish suffered heavily.
However, instead of adopting the “historical” behaviour, the Swedish stood in their lines like if nothing happened. Only one of their Brigades went forth, crushing a Neapolitan Tercio in the process. Well, we couldn’t expect better from those bambini…

At the centre, going against History once more, the Imperialists, unwilling to just stand ground and being butched by the Saxon artillery, decided for a forced march under fire to close in at the enemy lines. And wile Lopes shot His guns and walked his Saxons back and forth, the Imperialists, against the advice of his adversaries, opened their lines to make a larger frontage.

Meanwhile, at the Imperial right, things were really hot. João Costa had a Light Horse regiment (Croats), two Arquebusier regiments and one regiment of Superior Cuirassiers, while Miguel had two of Arquebusier and two of Cuirassiers. The Imperialist artillery took their best shots against the enemy cavalry but to no avail. Nevertheless, it managed to destroy two Saxon musketeer companies who stood nearby …

A singular cavalry fight ensued. For many turns, the successive charges and the advantages, now gained and now lost, created uncertainty regarding the final result. At a time, the Imperialists looked as if they were winning when their cuirassiers, after putting a Saxon cuirassier regiment to flight, won over a second one. The Saxon arquebusiers were already demoralised and all seemed decided when suddenly, an Imperialists arquebusier regiment was destroyed, and then another was put to flight. The Imperialist cuirassiers pursued their victims and the Saxon arquebusiers theirs so the enemy cavalries went each on its own direction. The Croats managed to shoot at an arquebusiers regiment, who broke and left the field so, in general terms, the Imperialist gained the upper hand.

At the centre, after a breathtaking march, the Imperialist closed in at the Saxons. A battery was quickly taken and put against its former owners and a full “Swedish” brigade was broken and put to flight by musket fire alone. It couldn’t be recovered as the nearest general, instead of being there where at the heat of the battle, was trying to recover a Saxon cuirassier regiment (it did recover it only to loose it immediately due to gun fire!). The infantry close combat was quick and fierce, with furious Catholic charges and a stubborn, albeit condemned Protestant defence. Numbers and quality both made their bit and the Saxon eventually got what they deserved...

While these events were taking place, on the Protestant right the Swedish brigades now held half the plateau, but suddenly a brigade, taking from a Spanish musketeers company at the rear (“los españoles lo hacen mejor!”), eventually broke. This was considered as the horn blow for the cavalries, Swedish and Spanish, started moving against each other.

But, alas, it was too late!
And that’s because, wile the cavalries were determined to clash on the Protestant right, on the Protestant left a Saxon regiment, desperately trying to defeat two brave Imperialist musketeer companies protected behind some hedges, got a flank charge by that very cuirassier regiment that had defeated the Saxon cuirassiers a wile ago.

With such huge casualties, the battle was definitively over so we decided to keep things as they were. In a wholly twisted way, History had repeated itself and the Saxons lost the battle for the Protestant side.

The game went smoothly and we managed to learn a bit more about FoG:R rules. And they worked just fine!
The scenario was very nicely done and the forces were evenly matched (to be historically correct, the Catholics should outnumber the Protestants, but for game’s sake we opted for balance), so we immediately congratulated our “SpielMeister” Herr Pargana.
Although we still don’t have all figures nicely based, we greatly improved in a couple of months so I hope that in a couple of months we’ll have much more things to show.
