Any more Southern League rounds coming up?

Post by RonanTheLibrarian »

Just noticed that the Northern League seems very active at the moment, which made me wonder if there will be any more SL rounds in 2015? From memory, the last (only?) one that has actually taken place this year, was the Oxford/ECW round in April.

Also, have any 2016 rounds been scheduled yet? I sincerely hope the Oxford round is on again, as all three of us Wessex Wargames Soc. lads really enjoyed our day out (another ECW theme would be nice, too :D ).

Likely that there will be a London round in 2016. I'm currently discussing with Tim P running the London Round at the Ilford Club where we have good premises, & parking and are unlikely to have any particular issues caused by other bookings (or if we do we'll know well in advance). Pencilled in date at this stage is Sunday 31/7 which I think misses most of the other comps and might allow one or two to get in some practice prior to Britcon. I'll start a separate thread as soon as I have clearance from the club.

Thanks - that's good news. We now have Oxford (April*), London (July), Southampton (September*), and Milton Keynes (December). [* = confirmed]

We should not have too many problems getting the premises (Redbridge Social Centre) sorted for the date - there are only two regular users on a Sunday though there is the odd event on a Saturday evening. We do however need to ensure we avoid the ballroom dancing as that could make the event `quite interesting'.

We can accommodate 20 without too many problems, parking is easy (and we are near the A406/M11 junction), and it's about 1/3 of a mile from a tube station for those travelling by public transport. If anyone wants to avoid an early start there is a travel lodge 200 yards away. So most bases are covered. Just waiting on the booking. Any general thoughts on period?

What was last year's?

Alternately use late as we have few competitions using the later period.

I think this year and last were both Thirty Years' War, weren't they?

(Take your point though, Bob, the D&G lists - my personal favourite - don't get as much of a run out as T&T or WoR. But perhaps post-1660 isn't most people's first thought when you say "Renaissance"?)

Bob knows I'm a fan of the late armies & so long as we are content with morphing from TYW that is a definite possibility. We can sort it out when I have the venue confirmed which won't be for a week or two at the earliest. I am of course extra motivated to run this as I can't do either Britcon or Challenge this year :-)

I would go for late myself Paul.

There could also be a round in Daventry at Hammy and Nobby's new establishment one I talk to Hammy and find his plans or I could run one at my school in Leighton Buzzard if people wanted?

How about this for a working concept?

From Restoration to Revolution Charles 2 to William III. I.e. Europe 1660-1690, plus possibly late Ottoman.

Leighton Buzzard (maybe early Nov or perhaps half term) might work?

I was wondering - (float this with Hammy as an idea) how about bringing the players together from N, S (and Scottish League for an invitation league of leagues bash)? January `17 perhaps?

I'd be interested but I suspect the 17th January could be too soon to organise.

I am sure we could find a way to incorporate a Southern League round in Daventry. It might be part of a mixed period event but we have a venue which I think people would appreciate.

The late 16th Century and TYW tend to feature in a lot of "national" competitions, so a 1650-1700 theme would be good.

OK - I'll work on the basis that it's late C17th. When I have premises confirmed I'll open a new thread.

Give or take public liability insurance, my school is hireable, plus Hammy has also costed out a round at his.
This looking good.
I like the Restoration to Revaluation/Revolution idea, what does everyone else think?

I can confirm that we can get the venue for July 31st. I updated the Ilford Wargames Group website last night so the basics are now on the competitions page. More info to follow.
