Potential Southern League additional round for 2017 or 2018

Post by timmy1 »

IF...

If I were to be able to arrange a Southern League round at Chelmsford, Essex in 2017 or 2018 (no promises - I depends upon me being able to organise things and generally I struggle to organise my way out of a wet paper bag... think wargamers remaining sober at a weekend event in Burton)

1, How many people would be interested?

2, How much would people be willing to pay (Hire of Hall / Trophy etc) - would need to know if it is viable before I approach venue(s)?

3, Would people prefer Late February / March or Mid-Late October / November?

4, What format would people prefer?
A, 2 rounds of 800 AP 25mm on 6' x 4'6" tables, Open theme
B, 3 rounds of 650 AP 15mm on 5' x 3' tables (it would be the 6' x 4'6" tables marked smaller), Europe 1494-1534
C, 2 rounds of 900 AP 15mm on 6' x 4'6" tables, either Open theme, or Beyond the Treaty of Ryswick (any army option at 1698)

would be no preset terrain, all vanilla rules, probably the only stipulation would be artillery not deployed to fire in the flank zones

If FoGR v1.1 was available we would use that even if Beta.

During 2016 the accepted going rate was £15 for a one day competition.

Having pre-set terrain enables more games to be played in one day. If you have a couple of additional tables then the danger of playing on the same table drops.

October/November is a bit crowded - Derby, Oxford and possibly the Doubles then Warfare.

There are 5 players at Oxford that might come.

Bob

Useful to know. Be prepared for 12 tables where the terrain was pre-set by a numpty...

I will investigate what Spring 2018 looks like.

If Oxford brought anywhere near 5 players I would be impressed (unless I drew Alasdair first round AGAIN...)

Would be rude not to be interested in something that close :-)

At the moment, we have the following SL rounds pencilled in for 2017; the first three are definites, 4) and 5) are provisionals:-
1) Oxford - Theme: ECW - April
2) Leighton Buzzard - Theme: Way of the Warrior (non-European) - June(ish)
3) Colbury (formerly Southampton) Wessex Wargames Society - Theme: Italian Wars 1494-1540 - September
4) Paul Kitcher is looking at Ilford hosting a post-1650 themed event from mid-August onwards (their venue hiring rules require them to have been there two years).
5) Steve Steads was looking at something in Reigate in late January/early February (see here: http://www.slitherine.com/forum/viewtop ... 09&t=72662 ).

Looks like March or May would be your best times, based on the above. Theme - there's no late 16th or TYW themes at the moment; the latter tended to be the preserve of Central London when they had their SL round - but that's not been held for the past two years, though; neither have the Clevedon round in March (similar to Way of the Warrior) or the Milton Keynes round, which used to be early December (I think that was TYWish as well).

Both the Oxford and Wessex clubs use similar systems for terrain generation, which can be vouchsafed to you, in return for a blood oath and your firstborn.

I'd agree with Bob and look at £15 as the standard fee at the moment; however, we have been chatting to Bob and Will (Madlemmey) about some sort of non-refundable (according to circumstances) pre-payment, as we initially had around 30 takers when we announced we were resurrecting the old Southampton round at the start of 2016 - by September, it had whittled itself down to the point where we needed a couple of last-minute volunteers from our own club to make it up to half that and recoup enough to cover the hire of the hall and prizes.

Oxford are a great bunch of lads and always support other SL rounds. We (Wessex) would try to get at least two, possibly three players to you.

Ronan

Thanks for that. Assuming no concerns over School Holidays and availability of participants, March looks favourite, probably 2018. If Wessex could bring a couple of players that would be great.

All

Looking at Late 16thC / TYW how about 4 A or C but dates 1560-1640 AD any list?

Would need to apply to the Southern League organisation and/or the BHGS for permission to be part of their secret society...

I didn't ask and my event was accepted in...
The dodgy handshake helps!

It's an hour and a half away for me, so quite do-able, assuming I can get the brownie points to go!
