How do you get city names to appear on the map ?

Set editor to Strings and then right click on the hex name you want to change.

Ok thanks, but does the game map not have city names available or do they have to be added manually, as you suggest ? There's no easy way to do this ?

Every time the name changes you have to inter the name manually.

Well, the game can't know what city names from whereever in the world you'd like to use. So for new cities, you need to edit the string in.

If you load map already done by someone there should be strings ready too.

No, I think we misunderstand each other.........probably my mistake. On my map there are no city names shown. I want to know what cities are what, both for a more historical feel, but also sometimes since objectives are named cities.
I can work out moscow and stalingrad and the like, but want to see all the hostorical city names on the map. Not what I may want to call them, but what thery are called.

Fpr example where is Vyazma on the map ?
thanks

When you hoover the mouse over the city, you'll see the name in the UI bar.

Maybe blending the names in using the ALT key (or any other  ) to have it like this:

many thanks for all the replies. I think the maps would be better with city names on them, but happier now I can at least navigate better.

Bernd's suggestion should be put in. At least as an option. Users shouldn't have to mouse over every objective to find the name of the one they are looking for.

Bernd and Mercutio make a good point, I would like to see such a toggle or function.

berndN indeed made a very nice suggestion, I second having such an option.

Unfortunately, it is not as easy as adding an option, because showing names of every city hex would render this option useless on many maps with big cities on them. We would need to edit all the maps, including all DLCs, and manually mark which hexes should show the name and which should not.

How about using a 'layer' then? It could be empty and added via a patch and the community could add something like name strings as well as colored hex for big cities? Only the editor need to be adjusted to create the needed information as well as a mechanism which would give us a key to toggle the layer on/off. Just an idea ;)

In 1.05 markers layer was added which sounds like exactly what you need. So for modders the problem is already solved, they can place anything they want there.

But this solution will not work for existing content. And in any case it will become rather problematic to localize.
