Meaning of little icons?

Post by Ryben »

Having the "H" hotkey gives you detailed info about the squads. There are obvious symbols (like the weapon a man is carrying) but there´s also some more like aim crosses and shields with different colours (green, yellow, red).

I guess the shield icon may be the cover level...am i right?

When tracing LOs the lines also have three colours. I guess green is "optimum range" and red "long range", isn´t?

I didnñt find anything of the manual regarding these icons. Could you explain to us? Thanks :)

Green shield: level 3 cover (best)
Yellow shield: level 1 cover (worst)
Yellow-ish shield: level 2 cover (medium)
No shield: not in cover

Green line: your soldier has a LOS to that target.
Red line: enemy’s LOS. At least that is what I’ve always seen it as. I will actually have to check on that one.

Plus then there are the bars on the squad icons
Morale level, energy level, ammo level

There is also the "eye" icon, meaning the unit is wearing camouflage outfits.
Somtimes I see a crosshair appearing briefly, what's that for?

Those mean that you can fire at those enemies. (with the current squad)

Red crosshairs are shown over enemy soldier in line of sight to the currently activated soldier even, so that you can see which enemies you can click fire actions onto.

There are two different type of LOS tracers. One actual "LOS tracer" (shown by holding down ctrl key for those that didn't know) that show the LOS from the currently selected unit OR the unit that you are currently hovering with your mouse cursor. Those are always green for your soldiers and red for opponent's soldiers (if you hover them and hold ctrl).

Then there is the range measurement when you choose a target to fire upon. And yes; green is good, and the more reduced your accuracy will be over range, the redder will the range measurement become. If it's all red, you don't have LOS to the target :)

Oh, I should explain all soldier status icons available too (couldn't find the picture so I hope I don't forget any of them now) :P

- Colored shields: Soldier is within a cover's cover zone
- Green: Heavy cover (3)
- Yellow-green-ish: Medium cover (2)
- Yellow: Light cover (1)
- White shield: Soldier is within concealing smoke
- Green crosshair: Soldier has stationary accuracy bonus
- Yellow arrows: Soldier has sprinted and has moving target defensive bonus
- Bullet and down arrow: Soldier is taking cover
- Star: Soldier is a squad leader
- Blue flag: Soldier is within capture range from CP
- Blue hand: Soldier is within guard range from CP
- Crossed bullets: Soldier is within Munitions Supply Point range

If I forgot any, tell me :)

I always mess the medium and light cover colours, way too similar. Wouldn´t be more logical to use red for the worst cover? Green-yellow-red it´s a intuitive code that everybody understands. :)

I could see red being confused for the lack of any cover instead of just bad cover. but maybe blue.

I do agree though. It is difficult to tell at times. between 1 and 2 cover.

Use black for lack of cover instead. Black means always something bad.

Hhmmm – right now though – no icon is lack of cover. So I guess you really don’t need to worry about the “no cover” part.

Ye, I didn't want to use red for weak cover, since red seems to be something bad - and light cover is way better then none. Maybe could have gone for blur for the heavy cover instead though, green for medium and yellow for light. Will keep this in mind. If you have a hard time telling the colors apart, look at the numbers inside the shields - 1 is light cover, 2 medium and 3 heavy (because this is how much stop value the cover has (stop value is compared to weapon penetration)).

I forgot at least 1 icon:

- Red parachute: This soldier is still regrouping after being air dropped (will miss its first round).

Descriptions for the icons will be added to the manual pdf.
