Secret Weapons of the Luftwaffe

Post by rezaf »

Well, gunhojr requested a bunch of projected ww2 planes from me, and it turned out I was able to produce most of them for him.
Nothing spectacular overall, but I think some of them turned out quite well.
If you have or can make better versions, I'll gladly step back and include yours here.

Note that I have quite a few of those planes in the pipeline, i.e. more icons I plan to add. For simplicity's sake, I'll post one per post for now - I'll try to link to all of them in this original post.

So, without further ado, I present to you the ...

Blohm & Voss P.188

This late war design of a heavy bomber features a highly unusual wing configuration which was thought to reduce supersonic butteting and torsional vibration in flight.
Powered by four Junkers Jumo 109 turbojets, it was supposed to deliver a payload of up to 3000kg with a cruising speed of about 900 km/h.
While definately an interesting concept, the course of the war was such that a bomber of this type was no longer needed, and thus the project never left the drawing board.

Focke-Wulf Ta 400

Image Image

In response to the America Bomber initiative, in which the Reichsluftfahrtministerium called for a bomber capable of delivering 10000kg of bombs all the way across the Atlantic, Focke-Wulf designer Dr. Kurt Tank came up with this plane. Supposed to be powered by six piston engines, the boardside two supported by turbojets, the aircraft ought to be able to deliver the specified payload at a speed of 720 km/h to destinations within a 9000 km range.

Heinkel He 343

Image Image

Although the designation incorporated a number of rather different designs, the He 343 was supposed to be a medium high-speed jet bomber, able to deliver 3000 kg of bombs in a range of 2800 km. As so many other bomber projects, the concept was abandoned when the RLMs priorities where shifted as dictated by the course of the war.

Heinkel P.1077

Image Image

Part of the Jaegernotprogramm this was a 1944 design for a rocket powered fighter for object protection.
It was intended to start from a disposable sleigh on a relatively short runway, utilizing four booster rockets, then to make an almost vertical climb up to 10000m after which it was supposed to be able to stay in air for a mere five minutes, after which it was to land on a skid. Work on two prototypes had just begun when the war came to an end.

Heinkel P.1078

Nicknamed Frosch (Frog), this unusual late-war design utilizing two pods, one housing the pilot with the other housing nosewheel and cannon, raised a number of doubts when appraised by the DVL in early 1945, causing the project to be abandoned shortly thereafter.

Messerschmitt Me 263

Image Image

Known as the Junkers Ju 248 during the course of it's development, this was an attempt at improving upon the Me 163 in a number of ways - most importantly, flying time was to be almost doubled.
Only a small number of prototypes could be finished before the war ended, some of which were captured by the Allies.

Messerschmitt Me 264

Image Image

Proposed in a time when the United States had not yet officially entered the war, this design for an ultra-high range (15000 km) bomber was mainly intended to carry out "nuisance flights" over the USA, for example to drop propaganda material on American towns and cities.
Despite quickly fading interest by the RLM, work continued on the project, and the first prototype took off for it's maiden flight in December 1942. While the results proved promising, work continued at a very slow pace, and when one prototype was destroyed and another damaged in bombing raids mid 1944, the project came to a halt.

Messerschmitt P.1095

Image Image

Rooted in the Me 328, an ill-fated design for a pulse-jet powered fighter, the P.1095 was a proposal for a multirole aircraft incorporating elements from several existing planes. Deemed underpowered and technologically obsolescent, the project was eventually shelved in favor of other designs.

Messerschmitt P.1099

Image Image

This was a design for heavily modifying the Me 262 to allow it to perform better in heavy fighter, Zerstoerer and night fighter roles. While quite a bit of work went into the project and a number of variants with differing armament were envisioned, the P.1099 never left the drawing board.

A late war proposal for a tail-less jet powered night fighter. Submitted only in 1945, the war came to an end before any serious work could be put into this project.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 Z

Image Image

In an effort to produce a new Zerstoerer/Light Bomber from as many existing parts as possible, Messerschmitt started to think about connecting two of their popular Bf 109 fighters.
While the results were promising, further development was overshadowed by the appearance of the first jet fighters, and eventually, the course of the war shifted the RLMs focus more and more towards fighter production, signaling the end of the "Zwilling".

Blohm & Voss P.207

Image Image

Unusual not only in that it was a late-war proposal for a piston based fighter but also in it's novel aerodynamic layout, this mid-1944 project never left the drawing board.
While it would infuence all of Dr. Richard Vogt (it's designer)'s further projects until the end of the war, none of those would end up being mass produced.

Blohm & Voss P.208

Image Image

A late war project for a piston based aircraft, it's pusher-rotor layout was designed with the idea in mind that the engine could later be replaced by a jet engine, which was actually realized with the P.212.
The P.208, however, remained a theoretical study.
