Blohm & Voss (Hamburger Flugzeugbau) Ha 137

First flown in May 1935, when it was the first plane to use flush-riveting wings, this concept for a fighter/ground attack plane suffered from availability issues with the engines supposed to power it. Once they were solved, the RLM had commited to the competiting Ju87.

Focke-Wulf Fw 189 "Uhu"

Initially conceived as a reconnaissance plane, Focke-Wulf redesigned the Fw 189 into an ground attack aircraft and entered it into a competition in late 1938. Initial flight tests soon revealed a number of flaws that hampered the planes performance in this role, and while most of them were addressed in subsequent variants, by that time the RML had chosen the Henschel Hs 129 over the "Uhu".

Henschel Hs P.87

Like the earlier P.75, this proposal for a ground attack plane featured an unusual fail-first layout with a pusher rotor.
While the design work progressed to a very advanced stage, the project was then stopped with the reasoning that pilots would never get accustomed to the controversial layout.

Hütter Hü 136

Rather novel concept for a ground attack plane by the brothers Wolfgang and Ulrich Hüttner, both glider designers.
Initially unable to fulfill all specifications of the RLM, the Hü 136 was improved to do so - but by that time the RLM had committed to the Henschel Hs 129.

Junkers Ju 187

A development based on the Ju 87, this design was mainly supposed to greatly improve speed and flight performance of the "Stuka".
Without giving a reason, the RLM ordered all work on the 187 to stop in late 1941.

Junkers Ground Attack Project

Work on this project for a jet-powered ground attack airplane, which never received an official designation, began as early as mid-1941.
However, the long standing availability issues with turbojet engines led to the termination of the project.
Decades later, though, it was to serve as the forerunner of the US Fairchild A-10 "Warthog".

Yet another highly unusual design from the hands of B&V chief designer Richard Vogt for a triple-engined fast-bomber and ground-attack airplane. When submitted to the RLM in in late 1942, it met with no positive response, and thus the project was scrapped soon after.

This dive-bomber design's most prominent feature is the unusually located rotor, located behind the cockpit - a concept previously only employed on the C-10 powered glider. However, this novelty was reason enough for the RLM to reject the proposal.

In an attempt to improve pilot visibility, B&V designer Dr. Richard Vogt came up with a number of asymetrical designs - the P.194 was one of them. While definately a promising concept, the P.194 never left the drawing board.

This revolutionary concept for a VTOL fighter and ground attack aircraft would undoubtedly have been difficult to mass-produce in 1944 - the ideas behind it were solid enough, as proven by several prototype aircraft based on it designed by the allies after the war.

This project for a jet-powered dive bombing and ground attack aircraft also useable as a makeshift fighter was halted by advancing soviet troops shortly before the first prototype could be completed.

Focke-Wulf Fw 187

Concept for a heavy fighter/Zerstörer aircraft dating back to 1935. A first variant actually entered series production in 1939, but was cancelled shortly thereafter, and between incomprehensible directives and construction bans, no other variant ever took it's place, despite the potential usefulness of the aircraft in the face of ever-growing amounts of allied bombers.

Conceived as early as 1937 by Oschersleben-based Aerowerke Gustav Otto, this project showed a series of design flaws which caused the RLM to concentrate on the Me 210 instead.

Arado Ar 240

One of the most modern aircraft designs of it's time when conceived in 1938 and suitable for a variety of tasks, the Ar 240 met positive response from the RLM, but delays and shortages imposed by the course of the war nonetheless lead to the projects cancellation in 1943 - before any variant had ever entered series production.

Numerous variants of this jetpowered multi-purpose aircraft were envisioned by it's designers, but none had made it even to prototype stage when the RLM ordered all work to be stopped in late 1943.

Dornier Do 217N

A lack of suitable night fighters in 1942 caused the RLM to use the Dornier 217 as a makeshift solution. A number of night fighter variants were actually produced in small amounts until all series production of the Do 217 ended in 1943.

Heinkel P.1055

First proposed in late 1940 and based on Heinkel's He 119 "world record aircraft", this sophisticated and promising design was developed into a number of variants before - without giving any reason - the RLM not only lost interest but actually forbid any further work on the P.1055.
