I noticed the German 12HP bridge engineer on the Southern Bug river behind my lines on the turn three just north to Odessa. It's entrenched and hard to destroy. Is the placement of it is intentional via script? There is no way it could pass through my defenses unnoticed and entrench up to the level six.

This is a common scenario design technique in PzC. Actually, this is the only way to provide river crossings for the AI (by pre-placing bridge engineer units and setting their behavior to completely passive) apart from putting a regular bridge on the map :P

It seems that destruction of these bridges should be the top priority :) Let's assume that the destruction of the most major bridges on great rivers is sumulated such way :) Which should prevent nazis from easy hopping over such natural obstacles. One more reason to hold Odessa and Dniestr-Bug gap as long as possible.

Do frosen river/lake hexes still have the negative effect on a unit in combat? It seems that the winter may ruin my Dnieper defense strategy :)

When the Siberian/Far East regular reinforcements are scheduled to arrive? It seems that it should be the turn 13.

That should not happen, so it is a "bug". I will keep it in mind for a future fix. Thanks for the catch.
As tenshin111 mentioned, those units are needed to help the AI not to get stuck behind rivers.

It is a very interesting idea, but as I stated before, the AI is not that clever when comes the time to handle river crossings. So that feature wouldnt work... sadly.

Far East reinforcements should arrive around December 1941 ONLY if you manage to keep the Germans behind the historical frontline. If some German units manage to cross deep into Soviet territory, the reinforcements would not come.

Hi Truth80,
at first glance, it seems you didnt install the Massis Terrain Mod. Remember to apply first the terrain mod and then Soviet Storm.

Best regards,
Akkula.

Hi Akkula, according to the manual I installed the Massis Mod first (MMDDMod1_11) and then the Soviet Storm, but it didn't work :(

Very strange indeed.
Another question: you did play another mods in the past?. Maybe your PzC has some other mods "remains" that complicate things.
One time I had to re install the game in order to fix some conflicts.

I wanted to avoid the full reinstall, but it seems to be the only solution :(

Sure, I played with another mods :)

Interesting situation on turn 13: the General Frost is on the rescue, but these pesky frosen rivers and lakes are in fact make it much easier for Nazis to penetrate my defenses on Velikaya and Dnieper rivers. The units of the enemy aren't very exausted in most cases for it seems I cannot rely on any winter counter-offensive now. Rather strange situation, despite the fact I managed to keep the Axis much farther to west than in the history, but the situation in whole get worse for me when winter had come, not better! The lose of 1 strentgh point for all enemy units didn't changed the whole picture on turn 13, actually I more rely on spring mud now :)

What are the best defence strategies for the grand scenario in the mod in 1941-early 1942? My stake on the river lines was beaten by the frost. Maybe it was the mistake. I stiil keep retreating east on the turn 17 everywhere except the Karelia instead the counteroffensives. May someone share the experience?

I will not say which is the best strategy but I can tell you how I play (I did the big scenario twice).
This allowed me to get a draw twice.
I did not win because I could not take Berlin (lack of time because the Germans were exhausted)
I stayed at the gates of Berlin
Here are the main lines
1) I retreat the most important units from the front lines (at least what I can save for the continuation) all my AA and AT guns and all my planes.
For this I have upgraded all my AA units by adding a transport.
The AA guns will be upgraded in 85 AA (My best weapon against the Luftwaffe)
My planes are too weak for now, they must be preserved for a later upgrade.
I use my AA guns as much as possible by grouping them on Leningrad, Moscow and Stalingrad.
2) I send from the first turn some infantry units and one or two tanks to Murmansk.
There is an urgent need for action because the road Leningrad / Murmansk will inevitably be cut.
Murmansk must hold out at all costs. Some renforts help to hold this city and there is a gain of prestige with each arrival of convoy
3) Delaying the enemy as much as possible in Minsk and Kiev in order to allow the evacuation of railway industries.
Care must be taken to ensure that the rails are not cut.
These industries are vital for the rest of the scenario
4) Holding Odessa as long as possible, this will allow a doubling of the strength of the defenses of Sevastopol.
Odessa and Sebastopol are destined to fall but they are used to immobilize enemy units.
It is necessary to save time to strengthen Moscow and Stalingrad
5) All the first reinforcements will be directed immediately on Moscow (except those appearing in Leningrad and Stalingrad which will protect their respective city)
6) For the defense of Leningrad, it will be necessary to upgrade some small tanks in KV and be careful not to use them in forest.
The artillery will be in support of the infantry and it will be necessary to plan to leave a hexagon free behind your infantry if not, your infantry surrender!
7) As soon as I think I can push the enemies in front of Moscow (it is enough difficult, so be careful, the enemy has many units), I will direct the reinforcements on Stalingrad to hold the line Serafimovich, Kalach and Kotelnikov behin the Don river.
8.) For the Caucasus, I withdraw my troops from Maykop in order to hold behind the river Terek.
The Germans will not enter Grozny.

It is true that I voluntarily abandon a lot of territory.
I decided to take this option after a few tests.
My planes, my cannons, my infantry were purely and simply swept off the map during the first clashes.
The territory I abandoned will in any case be easily conquered by the Germans. This is a walk for them at the beginning of the scenario.
I am planning just 2 delay operations in Odessa and Sevastopol.
Apart from a very few units, I had nothing to oppose to the enemy.
So I decided to apply the technique used in the Napoleonic wars, to retreat without losing too many men and material, to let the enemy lines of communication expand to the point of being unable to protect them.
Time works for me and the Russian final offensive becomes irresistible although the Germans have very good armored units.
I did not manage to get a marginal victory because I did not capture Berlin.
I would have had to launch the final offensive 5 to 6 turns earlier.
Easier said than done! :)

It would be interesting that other players reveal their plans.

I may reveal my own strategy so far. Maybe it leads to a failure, maybe not.

1. I retreated everywhere on the defensive line supported by the natural obstacles and the Stalin line defenses. Initially it was the line Baltic sea - Peipus lake - Velikaya river - forest area down to the Vitebsk - Stalin line between Vitebsk and Dnieper (main defensive position), Dnieper river - Stalin line just west to the Kiev - Southern Bug river down to Odessa nad Black sea. Till the December of 1941 I was forced to retreat to Kiev itself and the low Dnieper, but hold the line north to the Pripyat marshes. Much better situation than in real December! It was ruined by the frosen lakes and rivers...
2. I ecacuated and deployed all the industry needed, even from Minsk.
3. I invested initial prestige points mainly in the airforce upgrades, especially fighters. All squadrons were transferred back in the flak defended areas near Leningrad, Smolensk, Kiev and Sevastopol, then upgraded. Luftwaffe did not manage todestroy my airforce and it gained some experience using the weak Finnish airforce and non-escorted bombers as a prey. Also I use the fighters for the ground support extensively when it's possible.
4. I managed to hold Murmansk and repel the Finnesh offensive everywhere except Kandalaksha. I totally destroyed the Finnish forces near Leningrad itself due the extensive artillery/navy/airforce use and regained Sortavala north to the lake Ladoga. I also hold the Kem river line despite the numerous attempts of enemy offensive.

Nevetheless as for the turn 17, the Germans almost took Talinn wich was intentionally defended by delay forces. They also broke the Velikaya river defenses and move towards Novgorod and Demyansk. The Smolensk still holds but it's not far from the encirclment and will be definitely abandoned soon. The Axis took Kiev after extensive fights in autumm and defetead my tank forces near Romny that attempted to counterattack and delay the offensive. There are no attempts to take the Dnepropetrovsk so far, but the Axis pushes strongly on the direction of Crimea on the lower Dnieper. The situation is still better than in real February of 1942, but I don't see how to build up the new defensive line. The reinforcements are not so numerous to do it, especially in infantry. No winter counteroffensive of course!

For now I have the ability to hold Leningrad after the Finnish defeat, hold Crimea for long time abd some resources to keep Dnepropetrovsk and Kharkov, but I almost have no reinforcments behind Smolensk. For now I only hope that the general Mud in March-April will help me. Also the appearence of the Axis forces near Moscow have to trigger some reinforcements there.

Hello Doctorhaider, it seems you are having a nice challenge there :P . Mission accomplished for me  .
Jokes aside, historically the mud (autumn and spring) were THE obstacles for the Germans early in the war. In fact when the snow came and low temperatures hardened the ground they were to resume their offensive up to the gates of Moscow. But I understand what you mean and there is little I can do as the game core is designed to froze all the rivers alike. I may try to find a solution but it would require A LOT of triggers and testing and I fear to broke the scenario :( .

And please, give us an update of your progress :D . I am very interested.

Regards,
Akkula.

Interesting strategy, although I agree to save some units for later upgrades, be careful not to give so much territory: to lose many cities will reduce your income. Same for the Caucasus, if you lose some critical objectives there you may lose income and lend-lease units coming from Persia.
In the end, the question is to balance surviving units vs. early income. I can see different players have different perspectives with different results!. I think that is nice and add some re-playability to the scenario, which is nice.

I am very eager to hear more strategies from everyone as that give more ideas to add features and improvements to the scenario :D .

Thanks for all your comments guys, keep posting!.

Best regards,
Akkula.
