You still haven't fixed that?

Post by Belanos »

Quite some time ago I pointed out a flaw in stack movement, where when a path is blocked a unit will go in one direction and another will take a completely different route. One of the devs, I forget who, mentioned that this was indeed a problem and that it would be looked into. But lo and behold, just now my Colonial Trooper went one way and my Colonizer went another. Are you people really serious about fixing this game or what? I'm playing the original game BTW, no expansion. Having troops split like that makes it extremely difficult to have any reasonable troop movements, and I'm not really into moving them one tile at a time to make sure a stack arrives at my destination intact. I was thinking about buying the expansion from you, but if you can't even be bothered fixing the issues you acknowledge yourselves, then I'll have to reconsider. And while you're at it, how about adding an auto-explore feature? I can't think of a single 4X game that doesn't have that. It can get rather tedious always having to move my scout units manually.

I just had a look at the change log for the expansion and I see no mention of this issue being fixed. So I won't be giving you any more money until you do.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or what frankly. This was an issue that was brought up maybe 8 months ago, in a post where several people as well as myself complained about it. One of the devs joined in and acknowledged the issue, assuring us something would be done about it. Now 8 months and all sorts of additional content later, the issue has still not been resolved. I really can't see how it would be all that difficult to achieve frankly. If a unit's path is blocked, all orders given to it are cancelled. Even some of my single units were having issues with this. I'd send them to a location, and at some point their path would be blocked. So they'd backtrack, and in the process the fog of war would hide the thing that blocked their path. Then next turn they'd go back towards the destination I had set for it only to once again uncover the thing blocking their path, and the cycle would continue. There have been several times recently where I've had to redirect or manually control a scout unit because it was just going back and forth for several turns accomplishing nothing. This is a really sloppy way to manage pathfinding, and should have been dealt with a long time ago. As was promised, but not delivered on.

I found the thread I mentioned where this was discussed before. Note the date and the response by Void in the third post:

Sorry guys, but if you can't even keep your own promises then no more money from me. I guess I'll have to wait for Civilization: Beyond Earth for my alien planet based 4X game.

Just yesterday I played a game with a friend and he lost a colonizer because of this. He had a stack of three units going to a city spot. When they encountered an alien suddenly the stack split and the colonizer started wiggling around the alien because it always blocked the direct path to the spot while the cover units proceeded normally.

If the pathfinding can't be fixed then at least let people create a stack that keeps all units in it together when moving.

That's exactly what happened to me in my first post on this issue, I had lost a Colonizer because it became separated from it's escort. The only option is to move them one tile at a time when it's apparent that the way is clear, which is far too much micromanagement for me. It just makes the game a chore to play it that way. The Civ games, before Firaxis went to 1 UPT, managed to have full stack movement, as did GalCiv2 and Alpha Centauri, so what's the matter with this game that this can't be accomplished?
