Magic users shouldn't just be archers or artillery

Sovereignty is a turn-based fantasy strategy game for the PC. It combines a kingdom management campaign game with a general's level tactical battle game.

One thing i dislike about sovereignty (though in general i like the game a lot), is that magic users seem to be basically just archers in it.

They really need to be able to cast spells during battles too - even Fantasy General (unless i'm misremembering) had healer units that could heal another unit (Fantasy Wars , which is a bit like FG , definitely did) and other spells that could do automatic damage to a unit, fireballs that could hit all units in a radius etc.

It would also help to have levels of caster with either limited mana with spells costing mana, or else a limit on the number of spells they could cast per battle.
