I have quite a few plastic figures now, and was wondering if anyone else was going to be building armies in 1/72 plastic?

Cheers

I have 1/72nd figures for:

Egyptians
Assyrians
Sumerians
Macedonians / Pergamene
Gauls / British
Romans
and 100 years war

One of the guys at the club just took delivery of the plastic medievals he has had painted in Sri Lanka and they look very good.

I intend to - for dbm, and FOG once I've read the rules! I'm building Hoplite Greek and Assyrians. Lots of choice out there and figures are easy to modify.

Quite a few people already have 1/72 plastic armies. (Hell, I have some I converted in 1972  ).

They are normally used to play in 25/28mm scale using the standard basing conventions.

They look a bit weedy up against 28mm opponents, and, of course, don't mix well in the same army, but you won't get anyone complaining about you using them.

I can confirm that Dave Ruddock's medieval figures looked fantastic.

I agree with them looking weedy against 28mm metals, but with the price of metals these days, I can afford to build two armies by myslef in plastic without breaking the bank, Oh while I'm here, what is the 28mm basing scheme, I havnt got the rules yet but would like to get started on some Macedonians

Any with Zvesda bringing out their Mediveal Peasent army soon, the ranges just get better and better

25/8mm basing is on a 60mm frontage

Heavy foot, four figures to a 20mm deep base,
Medium foot, three or four figures to a 30mm deep base
Light foot, two figures to a 30mm deep base
Cataphracts, three or four figures to a 40mm deep base
Cavalry, three figures to a 40mm deep base
Light horse, two figures to a 40mm deep base

You can use less or more figures if you want and it looks right. What matters are the base frontages.

HF (Pikes, Hoplites, optionally Thureophoroi) 4 to a base, 60mm x 20mm
MF (Iphikratean mercenaries, Thureophoroi) 3 or 4 to a base, 60mm x 30mm
LF (Cretans, Agrianians etc) 2 to a base, 60mm x 30mm
Cavalry (Companions, Thessalians) 3 to a base, 60mm x 40mm
Light Horse (Prodromoi, Thracians etc.) 2 to a base, 60mm x 40mm

I have just gotten a 25mm Medieval French plastic army from a mix of Italeri, Zvesda, MiniArt and Strelets I think. Got them painted in Sri Lanka, look fab.

I* am basing them on steel bases to give them a bit of weight, but still much, much cheaper than a 25mm metal army.

* Somebody else actually...

I imagine most people with large armies have them already in 15mm. If you want to play with more than one army, building two or three in 28mm will be prohibitively expensive - and you dont need to. Just go to the Plastic Soldier review site and see how many figures there are for the ancient amd medieval period for a fraction of the price of a metal figure. And the quality in many of the ranges is superb.

just got some Hat alexanders phalangites and hoplites to form the core of any hellenic army and may add a few specialised units to form perticular armies such as cataphracts for Seleucid etc.

Thinking of Starting a late roman byzantine army as well.

To be honest I never really gamed in 28mm, mainly due to cost and mainly that I think it looks silly in the scale of battles your trying to refight I've always prefered 6 or 10mm, and only contemplate 20mm due to price, and supplier options in Australia

Hi Steve , ( Its me tom )

I am planning on starting an army in 1/72 , as you know i already started a huge collection in 1/72 painted up for WAB , but as soon as i get my hands on the FoG ruleset you can expect a ready opponent here .
BTW did you pick up your copy of the ruleset here in Australia or O/S ?

cheers tom

I've had about a dozend DBA armies in 1/72, so now I'm backing some of them up to be playable with FoG. Germans, Carthaginians and Celts are almost done. Greeks, Macedonians, republican Romans (and I fear: the rest also...) will follow soon.

Another advantage of 1/72 scale is also that they fit the 25mm basing very well. Personally, I dont know how someone manages to get 4 cataphracts on a 60x40mm base in 28mm - plain impossible to me. With modern 28mm figures getting bigger and bigger the old 25/8mm measurements just dont work anymore.

A problem I have with 1/72 is that i just buy more and more and now i have so many i'll probally never get them all painted. I find this scale perfect in all other aspects not too big and not too small.

Just incase anyone missed it here is a link to a 1/72 Ancients group to help people with army building ideas and the like.

I can't believe the quality and variety of the 1/72 plastic figures that are available. It's amazing! When I was a boy I was hard pushed to find much, now there is so much choice (more easily found too because of the internet).

I have ordered 15mm metal figures for HYW English and Scots Isles but in the meantime (and in an effort to practise the rules and demonstrate them to others) I have ordered 1/72 plastic Republican Romans and Carthaginian-era Spaniards. Hopefully I can encourage some of the youngsters at my son's club to take this up and the much cheaper range might be a help here too. (These kids are used to paying £2 per Warhammer figure!)

And you can get 48 1/72nd figures for the price of three GW ones.

I am waiting with baited breath for the Wargames Factory plastic 28mm figures too but in the meantime I will I think paint at least one if not two 1/72nd armies. It is the fact that they are so cheap that makes it really interesting for younger players, I remember having to convert ACW figures to Roman cavalry when I was a kid, now you can pick from three different manufacturers for them.

The only 1/72nd metals I have are 12 cataphracts because there was a big gap for years where there were none available but now there are two from Hat and their Parthians are really really nice.
