Hi.
I've finished my second multiplayer game, and I have some comments. But, first of all... May I ask how many of you have played a multiplayer game with version 8.x?
I go first with some general remmarks:
Subs and light cruisers.
It seems to me that subs are quite strong against surface ships other than transports/convoys. Subs are able to actively chase cruisers (rather than stalk them) and effectively destroy them working as a pack. That would not happen even in WWII, just because of submerged speeds until schnorkel late it the war (when radar and planes had already won the Athlantic War). I would change this as I find it too gamey. Robotron has told many times that dealing with the internal of subs is quite a mess, so I suggest to have a sub cap which depends on the calendar and tech level (like you can find it A World At War,
http://aworldatwar.org/).
My experience with subs packs is mainly on waters close to my bases (North Sea, Baltic Sea), and mainly coastal waters. So it is not a matter of sub speed, nor operational range. Subs simply pocket and destroy surface units worth 4 times their cost. It is not an assymetrical disavantage: both sides can do it! British subs at the Baltic are a delicious nightmare.
Intel and counter intel.
In our experience, counter intel is too unbalanced to the side who is late on intel investment.
As soon as your cipher is broken, you start loosing DPs. As you loose DPs, you can't invest them but every other turn, so the distance grows greater, and your opponent simply gets lost in the horizon... Then, when the advantage is so great you can't solve it for the rest of the game, the winner of the Intel Race has plenty of DPs to waste on events.
It's just a too slippery slope. Once you fall, you don't stop. Usually decided after the first opening turns, as soon as crucial events for 1914 are played (Italy, Turkey, Japan, 1914 offensive's events, east/west decission events, some badly needed reinforcements for France, Fritz Haber, you know them...).
Playing as CP
We have found that CP has a hard time. Lacks units, so it is easily overrun at Poland, and gets soon overextended in France. I have learnt that my first MP against Cocolo went better than I expected. He spended 1915 fearing a counter attack in France and Russia. I was simply holding my attacks being overcareful because my only reference was my single player matches, in wich early Entente Attacks must be very limited .CP was safe only because fog of war.
Of course, Cocolo had the reference of his late sufferings, so he actively fought and simply destroyed CP in 1915. And no, it is not just because the Army Corps in Brussels ; )
We wonder if we did something wrong.
So, just for the interest of modding, me and Cocolo we challenge you, Robotron, to enjoy two matches in a row, or even two pararels if you prefer and your mind is not going to explode. You play CP in both : D
