2v2 Market Garden playtest

Post by Erik2 » Wed Dec 06, 2017 3:54 pm

I have created a large Market Garden-scenario in need of three dedicated play-testers.
It is a battalion-level scenario with 40 turns.

I'll play the British airborne + XXX Corps. I have created a challenge on the server, no password
I need one player to control the US and Polish airborne.
I need one player to control the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe.
I need oneplayer to control the Waffen SS and a few Kriegsmarine land units.

OBS! You should use the 64bit version of OOB to play this.

You know a single-player version means scripting a lot of (German) units.
Would be interesting though...after I've finished a few other projects.

Market Garden is also my favourite Campaign of all time, tends to work superbly well as a computer simulation

Yes, my old 'A Bridge To Far' scenario using company (!) units. Quite a little monster.
I used that game as a template for the OOB-variant, but went for the more managable battalion units.

I saw your game in the open matches so I joined. I read the book a Bridge to Far many years ago and recently watched the 1976? movie version of the book. Always found this to be an interesting battle. Look forward to playing. However when I joined it slotted me as SS commander so I tried to switch to the other german open slot but it would not let me do it. That is ok with me.

I remember in an earlier (failed) attempt at playing MG a German player complained about the same inability to select Wehrmacht.
I have no clue why, but I'll take a look at the factions setup.

Hi Erik,

Not pushing, much, but just interested to know whether a single player version of MG would ever be considered? I imagine the AI, timing and triggers would be onerous, but I live in hope.

Just testing the waters here...
Would you guys prefer an Allied or German AI?
Note that the Allied AI would probably take more time to create.

For me in MG both sides are fascinating and with totally different challenges, Allies tends to have a higher Fun factor as there are more choices to make and its dynamic. That said trying to hold them up at the bridges so that you can cap Arnhem and stop the advance can be so tense and absorbing... This doesn't help at all does it?

If you play as the British, should the AI handle the US and vice versa?
Same goes for Wehrmacht and Waffen SS.
Lots of interesting combinations.

I've seen the Allies work well where the British column is AI, as after all they just need to keep going, and the US forces at the Bridges are player controlled, which can be really tense and fun capturing them and keeping them open. Same (AI control) can go for Paras in Arnhem as they just sit there and absorb, same too for the Para reinforcements, including Polish.

Playing as the Axis, player control holding off the US Airborne or returning taking the bridges can be fun, but historically this gives little latitude in my view as they were weak and reserves mostly, whereas the SS assaults in Arnhem were key and arguably tactical (if you can call throwing yourself repeatedly across a bridge tactical), but the wearing down of the Paras with what you have to hand whilst waiting for your elite reserves to be mobilised is great fun and early degrading of the Paras can be key to long term victory.
