understanding terrain benefits

The reduction in Attack Factor seems pretty straightforward as does that for Defense Factor, but I don't really understand how Cover, um, factors into the equation. 100% cover would seemingly suggest your units are invulnerable but I sure as heck know that ain't the case :-)

Am hoping this might also explain why defensive terrain doesn't help as much as I think it will and perhaps even why units in the open get bitch-slapped so easily. (I am in a couple Market-Garden games where run-o-mill Wehrmacht units attacking Allied paratroopers in the open often put a 2:1 or even 3:1 hurt on them)

Thanks GK...it helped some.

It is frustrating how opaque the combat process is and I sometimes wonder if that may be intentional...

True, there are many subtleties with the attack/defense mechanic. But, in general, the combat preview gives you a very solid prediction of the final result. Not much randomization there, usually about +/- 1.
