Deployment & Japanese Airplanes

Post by kagee » Mon May 11, 2015 6:55 pm

Ref Deployment phase; how does one deploy a unit? All attempts to deploy just don't work for me.

Why are Japanese airplanes the same blue as the US planes and have the same US Star-in-a-Circle as their counterparts? It makes it very hard to distinguish whose who at times.

Hi, actually Japanese aircraft are either white with black nose (carrier-borne) or green (land-based). Later there are also some variations from this, but no blue for Japan. They also have the correct Japanese insignia - the sun symbol on wings and fuselage. US carrier-borne and other naval aircraft are blue, land-based have a somewhat different green/brown tone.

If you check the upper left corner of the screenshot linked to below you see a white Japanese Zero fighter, and an American blue Kingfisher floatplane:

To your question regarding deployment, watch out for the so-called deployment hexes, these are marked with a white arrow on top. Those deployment hexes become visible only when you select a unit in your pool. Provided you have enough command points you can deploy one of your units from the force pool there.

Command points are separate for land, air and naval forces. Every unit already deployed costs you some of these. If you have more units than command points available you can't deploy anymore forces.

You can check the amount of command points you have left by looking at the small icons representing a helmet, an anchor and an airplane in the lower right corner of the user interface when you play a scenario (above the minimap). Hope this helps.

Hi Kagee, are you playing the tutorial? You need command points to be able to deploy units (there are three types of command points, for land, air and sea). You then select a unit from your reserve and click on one of the deployment hexes (highlighted in white).

If you're playing as the US, the 'blue' alliance is not the Japanese, but your allies (also the US). The Japanese planes are not blue, and use the Japanese Hinomaru rather than the star & circle.

The manual has a section on deployment (section 4.11) which might help, you can read the manual here:

Thank you for the replies. I am a noob when it comes to this game and I keep forgetting about the CP's. Will have to see how many the scenario's provide at the beginning. However, I thought the 'deployment phase' at the beginning of the scenario's to be a free placement of a unit within a starting, defined perimeter. I gave up during what I thought was that type of deployment phase for the first tutorial scenario. I was bound and determined to figure it out during the second scenario's 'initial deployment phase'. And so I selected for my very first unit to deploy at the beginning of scenario #2, apparently a carrier based plane near the top left corner of the map. I spent several hours trying to deploy this unit. I read the manual several times. No good. I then gave up, figuring the 'deployment phase' to be broken. So I clicked the next turn marker and then tried to select/move this unit. No good. I actually walked away from the game for several days. On return, to resume where I left off, I then noticed the aircraft had the red with white star associated icon; Can't move the enemies aircraft! Now, after 30+ turns into the scenario, I have encountered many U.S. blue with the American round star aircraft, but they are not American when they have the associated red with white star icon. I'm thinking it was probably not the dev's intention to duplicate the Germans dressed as Americans at the Bulge ruse, by having the enemy flying aircraft painted as American. This problem needs to be addressed.

Thanks for the quick and helpful responses. I am enjoying this game a lot. Your assistance adds to that enjoyment!

My bad. The scenario I ref in my earlier post is #3 of the Tutorial Scenario's four.

I have progressed through the proceeding scenarios, always spending the most time on my misconception of a 'Deployment Phase' different than deploying a replacement unit using CP's

A snapshot of that blue, white starred Japanese Deployment Phase aircraft can be seen at my dropbox http://tinyurl.com/A-Wolf-in-Sheeps-Clothing. The color blue and the white star indicates U.S but the Red Banner indicates otherwise. The Japanese aircraft in Bebro's 1st post (above) indicate Japanese aircraft not colored blue and yielding a RED SUN icon, circled in black on a red banner. My brain focused on the white starred & blue aircraft and not the banner. I tried to move this guy around , off & on for hours, in between rereads of the manual until my brain caught on that I should ignore the planes colors and markings and focus on the banner's color (head-slap).

Hi kagee, in the tutorial it is US units vs US units. Team green vs team red, this is a 'training exercise'. You'll meet the Japanese once you graduate from boot camp.

You can deploy any unit from your reserve, so long as:
There are white deployment hexes available for that unit (they will show up when you select a unit to deploy), and
You have command points available for that unit type

Whoops. Thanks Myrddraal. Also, missed the team green vs team red concept during the tutorial. Now all is clear!

Frankly it is silly and pointless to use two US teams during the tutorial. What's the point?
If the game is U.S. against Japanese, then TUTOR it that way!

Adding unnecessary complications by using the same nation on both sides of the tutorial scenarios just confuses a new player.
It took me a bit to figure out what the heck you were doing in the tutorials too.

Whoever decided to do that should have to recode the tutorials on his own time!
They are needlessly confusing to your users, as clearly evidenced by this thread.

I thank you all for the responses. I really did get so frustrated with the game for the reasons above; even walked away for several days feeling that things were broke. All the replies helped.

Myrddraal thread, just above, was very concise and hit all the 'nails' on the head. I did discover the deployment aspect during scenario #2 when I had to load up at the ports and then drop off performing beach invasions. I call that 'Deployment'. A Deployment 'Phase' at the beginning of the scenario made me think it was different and that the manual just didn't cover it because (in my mind) everyone knows what one is and therefor how to play one.

You all cleared up all that was unclear and I thank you and the Aristocrats for a fantastic game. Their hard work really paid off!

hello, usually in the prewar tests (even in WW2) those tests were performed with the same equipment from one side to another. eg identifying with blue and red. that used the same testing equipment ??? such that Japan was not going to give teams for testing. (Or other countries) today drills from several countries made in those days was not as well. so I think very successful tutorial that evidence.
It may seem confusing. but to read the history of WW2 see that the game is pretty close to reality
