A long list of historical inaccuracies in Winter War DLC

Post by Uhu »

I'm not a fanatic, but when historical accuracies can paid attention - and it is not changing radically the game concept! - than I await from a game, above World of Tanks and Call of Duty, that the devs take it serious. It is really disilliusional to encounter "fantasy-WW2" circumstances. :(
Especially it would have been easy to pay attention on this with the Finns, as there are very detalied documents, easy to find on the internet. Many times, detail level is up to a fighting vehicle record, of which has it done, and if disabled, when and how. It would have been max. a week work for one dev person to do the research - that is why I'm angered of such lazyness.

Some of already found issues (not complete):
- Arctic Fox: in reality it were not summer, but winter (artic) conditions.
- Unit stats are a mess, many units have almost random stats, especially releated to eachother.
- 40's and later inf units, especially heavy units are "inf tanks": they have better stats, than light tanks - in the open!
- Bombers are extra strong, without escort, they make huge losses to fighters (possible a design decision, because the AI never guard it's bombers...)
- AA can move 2 hexes, without transportation - why? It's the same, as heavy inf, eng in snow.
- Ski troops allowed still in summer conditions (convert, or double inf unit purpose option would be the solution)
- Finns did not use OT-130's, they were converted to T-26's. Yet it is available for the Finns.
- Finn had only 2x KV-1. Yet it is available for the Finns as whole formation.
- Soviets did just use one prototype KV-1 in Winter War, still it is portrayed as a whole formation in the Karelian Isthmus scn.
- Soviets KV-2 were rare species overall. None of them were used in the Nordic/Finnish front.
- Finns upgraded Vickers to T-26E. Not available in the game.
- Finns used several T-28B. Not available for the Finns (but available for the Soviets).
- Finns used several BA armored cars. Not available for the Finns (but available for the Soviets).
- Finns and Soviets used T-28E's. Not in the game (but T-28 icon is there).
- German Ju 87D was not present in Finland in 1941, still it is in the 1941 Artic Fox scenario, while Ju 87B is not there.
- T-34 M40 was not used in the Nordic theater, neither from the Soviets, nor from the Finns. M41, M42, M43 types were used.
- No Sdkfz 221 (or any other German armored car) was used at Arctic Fox (if needed, a Finnish captured BA-10 unit could be put in).
- Panzer-Abtelung 211, which was participating on that sector, where the Arctic Fox scn takes places had no Pz II's (or Pz I's) - it had captured Somua S-35 and Hotchkiss H38 tanks.
- The German Fw 190F is the type A, with this stats. F was fighter-bomber, while A was a fighter.
- Finns used several T-34/85's. Not available for the Finns (but available for the Soviets).
- Finn MS.406 fighter has low fuel capability. While in reality, it had about the same range, as the other Finnish fighters
- Finns used many 76mm M1930 type guns (higher range). Not available for the Finns (but available for the Soviets).
- Captured T-26 tanks were first used in Continuation War, not in Winter War.
- Air fields in Suomussalmi scenario, which were not present. It could be used off-map air support, as at Raate Road.
- Artillery cannot backup defenders, while it was a common, often used role in the war.
- Sommeri scenario is total off the scale, as there were only a few hundred infantry, not a whole corps, armor and even more
- Timeline pays absolute no attention to transporting the units from one region to other (it could be easy set, just paying attention to the scenario settings). Timeline mixes heavily with eachother at Artic Fox and Ladoga Karelia'41.
- Medium, heavy armor tank still get the same efficiency damage from mortars, or low caliber (76mm) guns, as light armor.
- Weather, snowing, or rain have absolute no effect on the battle circumstances. While it was a major factor in the battles. I think, almost every wargame handle this factor, Panzer General too, in 1994.
