That is quite a while ago, at least going by the splash screen print:

Well, Korea is not difficult at all. Just need aircraft, jet models and perhaps one or two armor. No SAM, no missiles, no choppers. The rest is the same of WW2.

OB Korea

Post by GabeKnight »

OB Korea...sounds like a good plan to me... :D
But are there enough interesting battles to be fought?
Sorry, but I know next to absolutely nothing about that war except when (and where) it happened...

I know a lot about it - in general. Especially air war. But that's not enough to build scenarios and a campaign for both sides... Units, leaders, here and there...
Personally I'd like to see it but I am not a good scenario guy. I could make the simple 3D models, I have sounds... units, even maps.

Im also a far east "fan" but i must say Korea historical war would be of
preferance mostly because of its comparably unseen lower popularity.
But ... OOB isnt made for modern wars in my opinion it were much
better to turn into historical sceneries and fantasy!

No final OOBs here, as I have to decide certain guidelines for values before making national OOBs.
I'm also considering converting the whole stuff to company level ( that needs some ranges to be doubled, especially arty...)

Nice map design. The contrast between the sand and jungle looks cool.

But I guess it results in very slow gameplay (one hex/turn, constant efficiency drops...) like with all jungle maps, right?

This density of jungle is just temporary, it's a quick fictional Firebase map (10 mins or so) well yes, it is slow... It's a defensive map testing massive 100 aggression assault against superior dug-in forces.

I was testing about how much difference should be between NVA/VC and US troops to have the desired result. Well historical set-ups were close to the odds like company vs battalion or more so it's very easy to be overwhelmed. If I will really scale it down to company level that means good bye to all-in-one heavies, mortars will be separate unit. Heavies will be "normal" and normal will be light. In this case light will be faster (that means guerilla maybe).

But of course I can use all sorts of advice with the Nam theater. We can get the most out of the current game engine, till devs will consider backing the effort with some coding (new traits, modern combat, etc)

I think that the war in Korea is the last conflict that can be shown in OoB, based on the current rules of the game
It was the last great conflict with large operations (also combined naval-land operations - big Inchon landing operation at the communist's back), with a "moving" frontline and legible conventional supply system (road and rail routes, warehouses in big cities).
The next big conflicts, starting from the Vietnam War, will require considerable modification in the game.
Both wars in the Gulf or the conflicts in Afghanistan will be a completely different war...

(Ok, there is one exception: Jewish-Arabic conflict in the Middle East - I think the six-day war and the Yom Kippur war Devs would be able to "build" on the current construction of the game
but it would be a mini-campaign only  )

Well it's not easy indeed. But I'll give it a try, invent some stuff)) Anyways I want to hear all your concerns that may come up...

I think Nam is the last major conflict that can be taken with a compromise and with some new ideas. Same goes with Afghanistan (Soviet). Certainly not Gulf "War" and Afghanistan (US version, cannot be called a war at all) can't be done in this system. As for the Arab-Israeli matter, also doable with some and the same compromise, as far as the 70's go. After then, will be same as Gulf and further, with mostly air and technology clashes which rather fall under the asymmetric warfare terminology. As we used to say, not a fight but a beating :D
