Sun Hero

Post by HobbesACW » Fri Oct 05, 2018 9:46 pm

Hi folks, I just played the last scenario in this excellent game but was losing badly after five turns on my first attempt. I didn't have enough units to the east. Second attempt I won easily. Where on earth should you place your units when given no information by the scenario description about where the enemy forces might be? In real life you would have some idea. It's just a matter of luck. A good game that would be far better if you gave the player some sort of idea about the enemy dispositions. All it would take would be a little more info in the scenario notes that come up at the start. It seems many scenarios start with the player having no idea about where the enemy is. Not a realistic game and thats fine - it's beer and pretzels but come on - I'm Rommel. I haven't just landed from outer space.

Cheers,
Chris

Chris, I haven't played this myself yet but I will comment that you have a point.

It's a fine balance that scenario designers face in that they must realistically balance fog of war with information needed to play the scenario enjoyably. On the one hand, there is fog of war and that's what recon units are for in this game and in real life. On the other hand, it could be assumed that there has been some of that recon done before the briefing is held.

OOB DLC and custom designers normally do a good job in finding that balance but maybe not in this case. That's as much of an opinion that I can offer until I do play Sun Hero myself. Perhaps others will weigh in with their own opinions here.

Speaking of the scenario, where does its name come from?

According to this source, "[Rommel's] martial renown was deliberately fostered—shamelessly by both himself and as Hitler’s hand-picked choice of only two soldiers whom he made into popular heroes—'one in the sun and one in the snow.' Rommel was the 'sun hero' for his exploits in North Africa and Edouard Dietl, who rose through the ranks from private before the Great War to four-star general in Finland in 1942, was the 'snow hero.' I agree, the briefing is of little use, but in the objectives it is stated you must endure the enemy counter-attack. There are also many more deployment hexes in the east. That imo indicates you need more troops there. But you are correct, the briefing is too vague and irl you would have some intel of the enemy dispositions - esp. the Brits encircled by your troops.

I've moaned about similar things in the past. Last time having no idea I would get reinforcements. I did - a pleasant surprise but in real life they wouldn't be a surprise and I could plan for their arrival - not necessarily knowing exactly when they would arrive. It seems a bit variable. I've just started Panzerkrieg with no Luftwaffe but the scenario notes tell me they might be available at some point depending on the weather conditions. That's great. That's the sort of info needed.
