Building core forces

Post by Tharmas » Thu May 16, 2019 7:33 pm

New to this great game but played Panzer General years ago. (seems very similar if i recall correctly)
I see some prefer stand-alone scenarios but I love building and using my core forces.
So...
Does the player ever lose RP's between scenarios or they just keep adding up?
What do you carry over from campaign to campaign?
Units, yes, but do you get your RPs? I presume CPs never carry over.
So do you like to maximize your core forces or store up your RPs for fixing damaged units?
Do maximized core forces unbalance scenarios if you build up a lot?
I guess this would be a reason for preferring stand-alone scenarios.
So far I have just played Boot Camp and US Pacific but I can see how a there would be a huge difference in your forces by the end of a campaign.

Welcome to OOB, Tharmas.

A while back I took some notes after a few of us had a conversation about resource points. Here they are:

Resource Points Formula

Opening RP's for this scenario + (RP's per turn x number of turns) - RP's used during scenario + RP's earned or given during scenario + Opening RP's for next scenario = Total RP's to begin next scenario

This part of the formula is the same whether you win early or play the scenario out to the end and still win: (RP's per turn x number of turns)

To my knowledge, RP's and CP's do not carry over from campaign to campaign. IF the campaigns are linked as to exporting/importing core units, then the only other carry-over from one campaign to the next beside the core units are their experience (subject to some filtration expressed in terms of percentage by the designer).

To date, the only campaigns that allow core unit carry-over are Boot Camp to U.S. Pacific; Morning Sun to Rising Sun; Blitzkrieg to Panzerkrieg to Endsieg; and Sandstorm to Endsieg (the arrows on the Campaigns screen indicate this).

That, I believe, takes us down to this question: "So do you like to maximize your core forces or store up your RPs for fixing damaged units?" That's a matter of preference or gameplay style which I am sure people here will debate.

As far as "Do maximized core forces unbalance scenarios if you build up a lot?" I don't think so in particular. It really depends on how the campaign has been designed, I suppose. You will find that it's not that easy to upgrade your units and keep them healthy at the same time given the number of resource points designers have allocated. At least that's been my experience so far.

If you see lines on the campaign world map then units, commanders AND specialisations can be carried over. Can't tell how much experience is reduced for each campaign at moment.
What is important to know that you still have to repurchase your carried over units, so you can't simply start with your all dozens of core crack-troops on scenario #1 at same time. You usually don't have that much RP on campaign start. It's not that badly balanced this way if you start the follow-up campaign.

If you are a starter then better stick to regular repairs/replacements. The more costly and more experience a unit becomes, the more expensive the elite repair gets. Specs like "Pilot Rotation" can save quite some xp for regular repairs.
Elite repair is best used only on very cheap units like early-war infantry units. Units that rarely fear damage retaliation like artillery, tactical bombers, and even naval units can easily do without elite-repair all the time.

Additionally you're getting half of the RP back that you've spent on repairs on aux. units.

Yes, that's very important to know, as it can save a lot of cash in the end if you let aux units take the first bruises, in particular with squishy aircraft.

There can be few rare cases where the player loses some RP as result of a triggered event - usually explained in objectives and/or text popups.

But normally RPs keep growing, but of course you spend a good amount of them again for repairs, purchases etc., which can get quite expensive if you only get the most expensive stuff, and want to maintain high XP for everything. So best is a healthy mix.

So, in a campaign, if you are at the end of a scenario, you can save RPs for the next scenario, but at the end of a campaign, which links to another campaign, you can (or should?) spend all your RPs on core forces, which will show up later. At the end of a camapign with no links, it's just the end and nothing can be passed along. Is this correct?

In the campaign screen, you must click the round Army Core icon to popup the menu on the left. Above, you have to manually export your core force to be used in whatever follow-up campaign supports it. You don't necessarily have to play through a campaign to export a core, like shown in my US-Pacific campaign session.
You are automatically asked to import a core force at beginning of follow-up campaigns.

Yeah, I didn't know either until I've read it here on the forums. Had to test it to believe it.
And knowing that fact actually changed my playstyle a bit, too. Aux. units are still expendable, but by now I feel comfortable to repair them a few times before they die...
