They will play a pair of battles against each of their three opponents.

Rather than me choose the armies I will ask the others to nominate a pair of armies and then I will randomly assign the battles to each pair of opponents.

I'm a bit confused. Each player nominates a battle matchup, and then we all play two of them?

Each of you picks a pair of armies. That is 3 pairs in total, so 6 armies.
We each then play two games against each of the other finalists. So we will each play 6 games using each of the 6 armies once.
Say you pick French verses Italians, then against one of you opponents you will use French against his Italians, and also Italians against his French.

I suggest just picking 2 armies that you enjoy fighting each other. Then when I do the draw you will see how it works.
