Betio Island

Post by Erik2 »

Betio Island, November 20th - November 23rd 1943
On November 20th 1943 the US 2nd Marine Division launched the first amphibious assault against a contested beach. The object was the tiny island of Betio in the Tarawa atoll held by elite troops of the Japanese Special Naval Landing Force.
In one of the most brutal battles of World War II the fighting on the island fortress lasted for four days and left 6000 men dead.
The battle was forever remembered as 'Bloody Tarawa'.

Coral Sea

Post by Erik2 »

Coral Sea, May 1st - May 15th 1942
In the early May Imperial Japanese Navy forces sailed from Truk and Rabaul heading for Tulagi and Port Moresby respectively.
The Imperial Japanese Navy Command did not expect to find any US forces in the area as they believed all the US carriers to be damaged or occupied elsewhere.
The US had broken the Japanese Naval Codes and had despatched the carriers Lexington and Yorktown to the Coral Sea in late April with orders to turn back the invasion.
Failure by the US forces will mean the fall of New Guinea followed by the invasion of Australia.

Eastern Solomons

Post by Erik2 »

Eastern Solomons, August 21st - August 31st 1942
On August 7th, elements of the US 1st Marine Division invaded the island of Guadalcanal and the nearby seaplane base at Tulagi, both in the Solomon Group. A partially completed airbase, promptly renamed Henderson Field after the first Marine aviator to fall at Midway, was captured and immediatley became a base for Marine and Navy aircraft.
A fierce surface engagement took place on the night of August 8th, a signal naval victory for Japan, although the result had little impact on the forces ashore. The control of Guadalcanal is considered vital.
The flat-tops prepare to do battle, yet again...

Guadalcanal

Post by Erik2 »

Eastern Solomons, August 1st - August 12th 1942
Operation 'Watchtower' was the Allied code-name for the first ground offensive in the Pacific. Operation 'Shoestring' was the name it received from those involved.
Spurred on by the knowledge that the Japanese were building an airfield on the island of Guadalcanal, a motley collection of 19 transports carried the 1st Marine Division to those fatal shores.
Intelligence had failed and they where not to know that the might of the Japanese navy was awaiting them.

Guam

Post by Erik2 »

Guam, July 21st - August 10th 1944.
Guam was more important in the American eye than the neighbouring islands Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas.
Guam was American territory before the war and a reconquest was important both for political and military reasons.

Iwo Jima

Post by Erik2 »

Iwo Jima, February 19th - March 26th 1945.
The goal of Operation Detachment was to capture the two working airfields and an additional under construction tp provide a staging area for attacks on the Japanese main islands.
This battle comprised some of the fiercest and bloodiest fighting in the Pacific.
After the heavy losses incurred in the battle, the strategic value of the island became controversial as it was useless both to the US Army as a staging base and the US Navy as a fleet base.

Midway

Post by Erik2 »

Midway, June 3rd - June 8th 1942
Stung by the unexpected reverse in the Coral Sea, and the surprise B-25 raid on Tokyo, Admiral Yamamoto decides to force a 'decisive battle' to drive the US Navy out of the Pacific Ocean.
The Combined Fleet mobilises in late May with the objective of seizing the American outpost on Midway Island.
Unbeknownst to the Japanese, American crypto-analysts have broken the Japanese code and are forewarned of their plans.
They are fore-armed as well...

Okinawa

Post by Erik2 »

Okinawa, April 1st - June 15th 1945
The invasion of this island was 'the last hurdle' before the proposed invasion of the Japanese Home Islands, only 50 km north. It was the largest amphibious operation in the Pacific.
Okinawa would provide bases for direct land-based air support instead of relying on the Navy aircraft carriers. It would also be used as staging and supply bases.

Papua - New Guinea

Post by Erik2 »

Papua - New Guinea, August 26th 1942.
The Kokoda Track campaign was the pivotal battle in the long struggle for control of New Guinea.
In this phase the Japanese tried to force the Owen Stanley Range mountains to seize Port Moresby as part of a strategy to isolate Australia from the United States. The campaign was fought over very difficult terrain with scarcely any roads and both sides had serious supply problems.

Peleliu

Post by Erik2 »

Peleliu Sep 15th - November 27th.
Operation Stalemate II was predicted by the commander of the 1st Marine Division to last 4 days to occupy the island. It took 73 days to finally secure it.
In the US it was a controversial battle because of the questionable strategic value and the high casualty rate, matching those of Betio Island/Tarawa a year earlier.
It was called 'the bitterest battle of the war for the Marines'.

Saipan

Post by Erik2 »

Saipan, June 15th - July 9th
The Marianas islands of Saipan, Tinian and Guam were indispensable bastions in the defence of the Japanese home land.
Aircraft and submarines based on Saipan can control the sea lanes south of Japan cutting off the vital oil, food and other products needed to sustain the Japanese Empire.

Santa Cruz

Post by Erik2 »

Santa Cruz,October 24th - October 29th 1942
Since the American seizure of Guadalcanal in August, events have gone from bad to worse for the Japanese in the South Pacific. piecemeal reinforcement and costly Banzai attacks have ruined any chance for the recapture of the vital airfield.
Every day Henderson Field becomes stronger, larger, better supplied and better defended. USN and Marine Corps aircraft fly in daily. a 250 mile no-no zone surrounds the airfield in daylight, notwithstanding the regular bombardment from Betty bombers flying down from Rabaul.
A major effort to recapture the airfield is looming.

Tinian

Post by Erik2 »

Tinian, July 24th - August 1st 1944.
By mid-1944 the Americans had advacned inside the Japanese ring of defence in the Pacific Theater.
On Tinian, the US Army Air Force could establish bases to conduct long-range strategic offensive air operations over the Japanese Home Islands with the new B-29 Superfortress, which, during early 1944 was operating ineffectively from bases in China.

Wake Islands

Wake Islands, December 20th - 24th 1941
After a failed attempt to capture Wake Island on December 10th 1941, the Japanese try again a week later...this time with the addition of two fast carriers fresh from their triumph at Pearl Harbor.

Watchtower

Post by Erik2 »

Guadalcanal, August 7th 1942 - February 9th 1943
Operation Watchtower was the codename for the first major Allied offensive against the Empire of Japan. The campaign was conducted on Guadalcanal and the neighbouring islands Tulagi and Florida in the southern Solomons.
The original objective was to deny their use by the Japanese to threaten the supply and communication routes between the US, Australia and New Zealand.
Later the Allies intended to use Guadalcanal and Tulagi as bases to neutralize the major Japanese naval base at Rabaul on New Britain.
