Legion Lossless Progress - failed again.

(For a while I thought that I'll necro the previous thread, but I think it'll be better if there will be a new one so that the two campaigns don't mix together. Also, there were some very outdated ideas in the old thread. Also, I hope that I'll be able to make it through this time, so starting the new thread acts like a "talisman of fortune".)

This is a thread where I will share my progress of my old OCD: finishing Legion Arena without a single battle lost.

I won't post only a general info on each minicampaign, instead I'll sometimes take some more detailed notes about the scenarios. So this will be a OCD feat. Walkthrough mashup. (Maybe "crawlthrough" it'll be, as I'm - hopefully - notorious for my usage of infantry armies.) Otoh, I won't waste your time with a detailed battle plans for every little skirmish, and namely the opening minicampaigns will be described without unnecessary details.
As always, I play stock Legion Arena with a Very Hard setting.

Latium (the first minicampaign):
I started by dismissing all initial units, then I purchased Nobles. They will be my only horsemen, and although they are worse then Auxiliary Cavalry, they level up faster and their drawbacks are not really big.
Nobles won the first scenario Defiant Farmers without any troubles.
A distractive Militia joined us for Latin Expedition to ease the job of Nobles.
Sabine Ambush was uneventful.
And I purchased pin cushion Velites for the Scout the Etruscans, where I wished to neutralize the javelin fire of the enemy Skirmishers.

The Early Republic (the second minicampaign):
During the Aequi Raiders I bought my second permanent unit, Auxilia, and hid it in the bushes on left, while cavalry routed as many enemy infantry as possible, starting with skrimishers.
Hernici Farmers were defeated after they cracked on my line of infantry made of Auxilia and two temporal Militias. Nobles attacked the enemy rear, then they encircled the incoming wave.
A temporal Scouts were acquired for Coriolanus with an order to route the two enemy Skirmishers and then lure the heavy infantries into the forest where my Auxilia waited for them. It was necessary to rally them after they were hit by the javelin fire. Once I got rid of the most dangerous enemy, both Auxilia and Nobles attacked the remaining enemy light infantry. Btw, this scenario seems to be bugged, as I lost it on one of my previous runs, when my general died. Also, Coriolanus, a level 1 Legate, killed five of my horsemen. Stupid.
I deployed my whole infantry section for the Latin Revolt, two Auxilias and a pincushion Milita. They were rodered to rush into the forest behind the enemy lines so that they don't waste time with throwing the pila. This way they don't get caught in the open by enemy horsemen. Nobles stayed at home for this battle.
Another permanent unit, Velites, joined us during Etruscaens at Caere. I rushed the infantry into harsh terrain, routed the Skirmishers with Nobles and then massacred the enemy heavies in the bog.

Gauls and Latins (the third minicampaign):
Men in Black were bloody as usual. I bought temporal Skirmishers and Militia, the latter were meant as a wall behind which the Nobles might fall, once they trample the enemy level 17 infantry. But this plan failed and the Nobles were massacred, but not sooner before they inflicted massive damage on enemy units. The rest of squads held the rough in the east and repealed the nemy... although only so so.
I used only Auxilias and Velites for Gallic Scouts, they were rushed into the rough where they defeated the enemy cavalry without much troubles.
Thirsty Gauls is quite hard battle, if the enemy breaks through or disorganizes our troops. I made a defensive cluster in SE rough terrain, with double pincushion Militia marching into the arrow fire. Another Militia backed by a temporal Auxilia held the left flank. Nobles were in reserve, once the battle started they sneaked through the lines and neutralized enemy archers; once the battle culminated, they sieved the routed squads.
For Lingering Gauls I used the temporal Skirmishers (that have made three levels so far) for the last time, bought several light infantries to absorb the arrows, purchased a first permanent unit of Auxiliary Archers and made a cluster in the SE corner. Nobles went on long range killing spree, then they returned to the base and finally seived the whole scrum.

The First Samnite War (the fourth minicampaign):

For the Conscript Revolt/Annoying Gauls I purchased temporal Nobles to get rid of enemy Skirmishers, I also strenghtened my lines with one own Skirmishers I planned to use a bit few battles onwards. (Sadly they were crippled.) I made a cluster in woods, rushed Legate and "real" Nobles against the opposing light infantry to capture them in the open; the remaining men held those initial positions in the forest. All went (quite) well, except for the poor Skirmishers.
Campanian Allies is a mess, especially with the low number of troops allowed. I bought a pincushion Hastati to break the centre, Scouts to route one of the Skirmishers on enemy flank, and ordered my Nobles to do the same unto the others. Remaining men positioned themselves in woods.
For the next battle, Conclude the War, I took a pincushion Velites and Skirmishers. These were used to distract the enemy Skirmishers on Samnites' flanks. A second Auxiliary Archers joined our ranks, too. I made a cluster in SW and lured the heavies into the rough were they were an easy prey.
A pincushion Hastati were once again used during Annexation of Etruria. They held the centre where they ate lots of javelins. Remaining men made a defensive cluster around the patch of rough terrain in SE.

The Second Samnite War (the fifth minicampaign):
I acquired the first heavy infantry, Legionaries, for Relieve of Neapolis. Then when I bought Stronger Bows for my Archers and got myself pincushion Paesants to hold the left flank, I was left with exactly zero gold. I rodered my men into defense on right flank, Nobles started the battle with few overruns, then they were sent to reserve until the battle culminated.
For Battle of Caudine Forks my men were positioned in SE around the rough patch, withtwo pincushion skirmishers in front. Nobles held the rear, ready to patch any hole.
Pincushon Hastati were purchased for Battle of Lautulae. They stood in front of my main army that took up the positions in woods and around them, where they waited the wave. Nobles neutralized the front Skirmishers, then encircled the enemy once they made the cluster in the woods.
I designed a complicated plan for the Etruscan Treachery (using some pincushion Scouts and Auxiliary Cavalry), a plan too hard to unravel in words. The only thing that matters is that it worked and I passed through this usual chokepoint with 16 seconds remaining. Nice one!
Final Battle ahead of us. I bought several Skirmishers to make a distractive line to absorb the javelins, then ordered my cavalry (Nobles and temporal Scuts) to attack the enemy right flank in two waves: Nobles will open the hole, Scouts will pursue the Skirmishers behind. Rest of troops made a defensive arc around the forest with heavies out in the open field on left. I lured some light infatry there. Enemy javelinmen depleted their ammo on my expendable troops. Heavies entered the forest where the Auxilia made short work of them. Nobles overran many routed enemy. This battle ended with zero non-pincushion healing and I bathed in experiences.

The third Samnite War (the sixth minicampaign):
I purchased another permanent Legionaries, and I also got myself temporal Scouts to pursue the enemy Skirmishers during the Etruscans. I ordered my cavalrymen to get rid of the aforementioned javelinmen, other units made a usual defensive cluster based in the woody terrain.
For Battle of Sentium I bought some temporal pincushions, javelinmen for the left flank, Nobles for the right. I made a defensive line with core Nobles in rear, ready to exploit any chance.
Two temporary Velites helped us during Samnites, as there are lots of enemy javelinmen that could be too dangerous. Nobles were ordered to lure the enemy heavy infantry squads into river hwere my Auxilias massacred them. (Btw, river should act differently and it should hinder ALL units; even the light infantry doesn't like to fight shoulders deep in a mud or water.) All missile troops were hiding in the rear so that they don't deplete ammo, and they were rushed forwards only after the enemy heavies were routed. As usual, cavalrymen seived lots of additional experiences. A bug happened and my light infantrymen rushed forwards and forwards and forwards, until the enemy Skirms kicked their butts.

Anti Infantry Specialist


Gauls and Pyrrhos (the seventh minicampaign):
I don't use the heavy infantry during Siege of Arretium, instead I hide my light units behind the wall of temporal Auxilias in forest on left flank. Cavalrymen are rushed to the north out the harm's way, and they overran the routed.
Legionaries stayed at home again for the Battle of Vadimo Lake. I bought several light infantries to make a second-grade defensive line in rough. This bought me enough time to destroy enemy left flank, traverse the battlefield with my units, and to hold the positions in the central harsh terrain.
I purchased the last permanent unit for Cisalpine Gauls scenario, Triarii.Most of my men held the centre while the cavalry destroyed enemy Skirmishers. Then I ordered my Auxilia into harsh terrain where they easily dispatched all the horsemen and heavy infantry. Soon after the battle was over.
Battle of Heraclea is quite difficult, as the space is limited. I bought four Skirmishers as pincushion squads, ordered the rest of my units behind them and once the lines met, Nobles rushed for the Archers. Auxilia was hiding in the woods and didn't take a part in the opening stage of the battle.
Two pincushion Skirmishers were purchased during Battle of Ausculum. Nobles rode down some of the far troops, then returned back to the base in west. This battle isn't hard, just keep the things going on in harsh terrain.
I once again bought few pincushion units for Battle of Malventum and sent them forward to make mess in enemy lines. Auxilias held the left flank around the river bend, rest of the units were positioned in centre with Nobles in reserve ready to glue any hole. Alas, this battle turned grim and I had lots of fallen with over 1300 Fame necessary to heal.

The First Punic War (the eigth minicampaign):
I wrote that the "Battle of Messana is a limited deployment skirmish" and that's true. Other than that, the old info in the forgotten thread is outdated. Simply welcome the enemy cavalry with a wall of spears they'll break on.
Contrary to the above, for the Battle of Aggreigentum I still "haven't invented any better plan than just wait at the bottom of the map and let the enemy come for the missiles. I purchased two Militia baits, but I don't think that they'll do much, but at least they'll clog the centre and hopefully they'll eat an arrow or two before the enemy routes them." That's it.
I used three pincushion Skirmishers for the Battle of Alalia. They held the rocky ground with other units behind them. Heavies and cavalry were ready to exploit any opportunity.
I used similar plan for Battle of Adys. Skirmishers rushed forwards to make mess in enemy lines, one Auxilia held forest on right, the other went directly ahead into the rough. Heavies attacked their appropriate targets, Legionaries assaulted the light infantry, Triarii stopped the cavalry on our left flank.
Battle of Baggradas happens on a very flat plain, so there's just a small forest to which the Auxilias may lean. I made a defensive cluster, routed the enemy Skirmishers with my cavalry section augmented by temporal Scouts and then just let the enemy break on my lines.

The Second Punic War (the ninth minicampaign):
Ranging from level 18 to 11, my squads were ready to repel the enemy at Battle of Trebbia. I've made usual defensive cluster around the southern forest with temporal Skirmishers on top to eat the arrows. Once the enemy reached my positions, it wasn't hard to kill the necessary 150 men. Only the heavies payed the heavy toll. Esp. Triarii need to get some levels, they're still too vulnerable.
Battle of Cannae takes place on a completely flat plain with nowhere to hide. I bought four Militias to absorb the initial cavalry blow, then I purchased Nobles to disorganize enemy left flank so that I can kill the Archers somehow. All my units made a line in west wehre they dispatched the cavalry, then I destroyed approaching enemy one at a time as they walked into the arrow fire, javelin storm and wall of spears. Temporal Nobles made few levels and lost only a single horse, so i kept them for time of need.
I hid the light units in forest on the east during Battle of Dertosia, while the heavies held the centre. Triarii were on the extreme left where they massacred the enemy horsemen after the energy of theri initial blow was absorbed in a line of pincushion Paesants. All went smoothly, the enemy heavies don't stand a chance when facing high-level Auxilia in woods.
For the Battle of Illipa I bought some distractive anti-elephant elements, then I ordered my men to find shelter in the woods. Temporal Nobles were sent to dipatch the missile troops, the core cavalrymen followed in their wake. I was too benevolent, though, and I lost this battle due to the time limit, although it's amazingly liberal.

PROGRESS LOST DURING THE BATTLE OF ILLIPA.

So, having more than a half of the whole campaign behind me, I lost for the first time. There's nothing special about it, and it happened only because I was too unfocused and I didn't take enough care of the time limit. I will follow this run further, though. I have a strong feeling that a lossless run is pretty doable. So far I got myself through all the usual bottlenecks of the game (be it Lingering Gauls, Etruscan Treachery, all the big bloody battles of Gauls nad Pyrrhos minicampaign), so there's no reason to not make it through. If only I had taken more care of the watches...

Continuation of the above post.

Ok, so here we are again, facing Carthaginians during the Battle of Illipa. I used a modified plan - attack the elephants head on to force my way through - , Auxilias took care of woods, both Nobles kicked out the Archers. I finished this battle with one-and-a-half a minute remaining. Says a lot about my concentration during the last attempt. :-(
I purchased pincushion Peasants for the Battle of Zama, and a not-quite-pincushion Auxiliary Cavalry to take down the enemy Archers that positioned themselves in the open field. Most of the remaining units went through the centre, while heavies took care to not step into the rough terrain. Nobles attacked the Hannibal's Veterans on right Carthaginian flank, and lured them into the rough. Overall this wasn't hard battle, but my heavy infantry section suffered some damage, as the men are inexperienced.

Hellenistic Monarchies (the tenth minicampaign):
When I wrote that "the 2nd Macedonian War aka Cynoscephalae is very fast and brutal scenario", I wasn't lying. during this battle I definitely got rid of the support level7 Nobles who were ordered to charge on the right flank to disorganize the enemy lines and to absorb some arrows. Other units held defensive positions with Auxilia a bit in front so that the enemy heavy units go after them into the scrubby ground. My "real" Nobles were in reserve and once the time was right, they rode down the enemy archers.
I once again purchased a pincushion cavalrymen for The Syrian War (or Magnesia, if you wish) to make mess in enemy lines. But this time I used Auxiliary Cavalry. I hid the light troops in the left forest, ordered the newly bought cavalrymen to act as a decoy and held the cetre with heavies. After the Auxies traversed the battlefield and made a hole in the enemy lines, I rushed the Nobles against enemy Archers. The battle was once again fast and brutal.
Ambush at Cypsela, a battle that happens nigh exclusively in the forest, is not what my heavies-heavy army is best sutied for. I bought double Skirmishers pincushions, ordered all my light units into the woods and Nobles rode on the right flank to hit the far enemy units so that I don't lose to time limit.
For the Battle of Pydna I purchased two pincushion Skirmishers to disorder the enemy centre and then two Militias, one to attack the archers in NE corner, the others to hold the initial blow of enemy cavalry. My Nobles were in reserve and waited for any hole to open. Auxilias rushed into the rough to make short work of Macedonian phalanx. This was once again pretty fast and cruel battle... as was the whole minicampaign.

Trouble in the North (the eleventh minicampaign):
WARNING! Partial copypaste incoming!
"Although the Battle of Avignon is another time limit mission, there's a lot of time here. I placed few of my squads on the left side (Nob, Aux) and set them to charge. Horsemen will chase down the enemy Archers, Auxilias will kill the Fanatics in forest. Pincushion Militia was sent forward to eat some arrows, and the two archers followed them to kill the enemy bowmen. Once this is done, my missile units will blast the second squad of Fanatics before they'll even know what's happening. Then I'll order my units to the right, to shot down the enemy units and then finally dispose of the rest. Key is to not hurry, as the time limit is really generous."
I made a defensive arc around the river bend in the bottom right part of the map for the Giants of Noreia with some disruptive newbie javelinmen in front. Auxilia supported their line and once the enemy rushed into the river, my light units took care of them. Nobles dribbled into the line of enemy archers, then my heavies moved further to finish the scrum around the river banks. The last one was the second Auxilia that held the scrubby patch left from the middle, where they dispatched enemy cavalry.
Before the Battle of Aginnum I positioned my squads in defensive perimeter in SW corner with some pincushion Skirmishers in front. I held the rough ground with Auxilia and they destroyed horrid amount of enemy heavies. My own heavy infantry was on the far left where they defeated the Warriors of Tigurini without much trouble.
For the Battle of Arausio I made a tight defensive cluster in west with pincushion Militia on top, Triarii in centre supported by Legionaries from both sides and Velites in back. These were pwerful enough to stop the cavalry. Forest was occupied by some one-purpose Skirmishers with Auxilia staying deeper. Archers shelled the area and Nobles simply rushed forwards to seive whomever they could.
Ah, the infamous Battle of Aquae Sextiae, the bugged kill-the-leader scenario. I built a defensive arc in the southwest with only one Auxilia holding the east patch of rough. I welcomed the nemy cavalry with a line of spears and there were shooters right behind the Triarii. Once the lines met, I ordered my cavalry to get rid of enemy bowmen. Soon the enemy "legate" was dead and the battle was won.
I needed some pincushion light troops for the Battle of Vercellae, and I find one cavalrymen helpful, too. They disorganize the enemy bowmen, although they won't withstand much. The key is to rush into the forest and get rid of heavy infantry, while the archers might be destroyed in the open... if one is lucky to lure them there.

The Third Servile War (the twelfth minicampaign):
A pretty fast minicampaign, quite harsh sometimes.
Mount Vesuvius is (as I already wrote) a pretty straightforward battle. I just bought Auxiliary Cavalry that will work as a breakthrough unit and arrow fodder in the centre, where my slower infantrymen will force their way deeper into slaves' line. Nobles make a small detour and they'll kick out the enemy rear.
For the Battle of Granachus I used even more simple plan: "Charge!" I just took care to not shoot at the heavies so that they stay in the rough. I lost five men and I didn't even need to heal anyone.
Crossing the Alps has tendency to turn into massacre, as the time limit is very long and lots of enemy gets too close. I bought a Scouts as a decoy, Auxiliary Cavalry to ride into the hole and kill the Thracian Archers, my Nobles were sent to dispatch the javelinmen on enemy right flank. All other units made a defensive arc in the SW. I also bought some light units to make mess in enemy lines.
For A Small Victory I used another easy plan. I placed my Auxilias on right flank, pincushion cavalrymen in the middle and heavy infantry section on left flank, then I ordered them to charge the enemy. This way they'll end in an appropriate terrain, although horsemen might get routed by the archers' babysitters. I got Nobles in reserve to glue any hole.
Normally I rush my men into the safety of northern wood during the End of the Dream, but as I got quite a powerful threesome of heavy infantry, I decided to take my chances in the open. I hope that my archers and javelinmen will weaken the enemy wave before it hits. I purchased a pincushion horsemen just for sure.

Most of my units are around level twenty, with only the Auxiliary Cavalry that I kept after the last battle being on level five.

"Battle of Bibracte is a perfect opportunity for a massive experience hunt. The enemy is totally static and his units are weak, so lets make this a turkey shooting. After all, our Archers need some levels. Therefore I placed all the Archers, one Auxilia baby-sitters and a Cavalry unit for overruns. An opposing leader must be killed, which of course means that you must not kill him, if you wish to harvest all the available experiences." I lost two soldiers: one infatrymen and one horseman.
I bought a line of pincushion Skirmishers for the Battle of Mulhouse and reinforced my right flank with disposable Hastati followed by core Triarii. These should be powerful enough to get rid of the cavalry. Centre was held by Legionaries, light units went through the forest. Both horsemen were in reserve and waited for any opportunity.
Battle of Sambre River is a race against the clock. I bought Nobles and ordered them to run arounf the battlefield so that they lure the enemy away from the defensive cluster I made in the southwest. That's it. The enemy bowmen are too powerful to risk a confrontation, so I used this dirty trick.
Ambush at Divo is one of the funniest and most straightforward battles ever. I place all Archers east from the forest, put two Auxilias with javelinmen support into the woods to guard the accesses and order the heavies to advance against the eastern enemy column; I also put a disposable Hastati in front of the heavy infantry section so that the core doesn't need to absorb the first hit.
I put all my units into SE corner during the Battle of Alalia and waited for the enemy to come. The'll break themselves in the woods, and my cavalrymen, the only unit that started in the opposite part of battlefield, will destroy their rear.

The Civil War (the fourteenth minicampaign):
The final minicampaign starts with another archery range, the Battle of Pharsalus. Nobles were on far left, where they trampled, disengaged and trampled and disengaged some unlucky heavy infantry overand over again. Rest of my units held the scrub on the right, with a temporal Auxiliary Cavalry bought to get rid of enemy Archers that always shot into the scrum. This battle is very easy, just let the cavalry break on the Auxilia line in the rough terrain.
For the Battle of Nicopolis I made line centered around the rough patch in south. Triarii stood firm against the calvary and their newly purchased Sarissas gave them much needed punch and confidence. Othe units held the vital points, while cavalry was ready to glue any hole or breakthrough if need be. I bought few Skirmishers as decoy and javelin fodder.
I've placed the foot soldiers in a usual two lines in the centre of the field of the Battle of Zela and ordered them to charge while avoiding their respective unfavorable terrain. Missile troops followed in their wake. Nobles were held in reserve, once again ready for any opportunity, but this time I bought a solid cavalry force of Auxiliary Cavalry, Nobles and Scouts to get rid of the enemy archers nad make some mess in opposing lines. Triarii were on our left flank, as that's where I expected the enemy cavalry to move. I was too fast, though, and went into the enemy arrows before my temporal cavarly hit. With many losses happening, I was not strong enough to finish the battle in time, so this was my second loss so far with no more than few seconds missing. The next try was better.
In Africa I ordered two Auxilias to hide in the scrub before the horsemen get them, both Archers and the javelinmen supported from back, while Legionaries and Triarii held the right flank against incoming cavalry wave. All units were positioned in west, with leader deep in the scrum and Nobles ready to charge the nemy missile units.
I made an impenetrable arc of heavies in SE, placed all Archers hidden behind them, then I ordered my Auxilias to rush against elephants into the rough, followed by close support Velites. As always, Nobles were ordered to wait for any chance. This time I bought whopping six pincushion Velites to absorb enemy fire and disorganize his lines.
I bought temporal Elephant and Auxiliary Cavalry for the Battle of Munda, to make the math a bit more hard for the enemy Archers. Core units held the right bottom corner, where the Auxilia may hide in the forest with javelinmen support (I kpet one new Velites on level 4), and the heavies may form a solid defense to stop anyone daring enough to attack them. nobles waited for any opportunity once again.
My light infantry together with the elite Velites (wow, a rhyme!) held the left flank during the Battle of Philippi, where the rough patch made it possible for them to withstand the blow of several experienced heavy infantry squads at once. My own heavy units held the right flank with the novice Velites behind them. A temporal elephant sixpack was ordered to move into the enemy fire, while my Archers were trying to dispatch the bowmen. Nobles held the center, once again ready to glue any hole in my formation.

I finished the campaign few days ago, but needed to digest the experience a bit, before writing anything meaningful. Now... some notes:
First of all I think it's official now - I can't use the heavy infantry. As you might notice, the result is several thousand Fame less than usual, and some eight thousand less than my record. There were many battles where my heavy section had heavy losses, and esp. before they made any significant progress and improved their abilities and gear, they were often times completely destroyed and routed. Except for Triarii (and even those seem only moderate to good), I don't find them appealing in any way, as most of the battles have a rough or forest where to hide, moreover the enemy is usualy a bit too static (which is not a best scenario design), so you chose where, when and how to attack (if attack at all).
Starting with Nobles, however fun it may be due to the lots and lots of horseshoes, wasn't a wise move, too. A cavalry, being a squad that needs healing after any loss beyond the first, will burden your fame flow, and over the course of the campaign, I noticed that the Nobles bled a lots of small beads that turned into quite some fame lost. Also, the fact that they can't get necessary high-level sarmour makes them very vulenrable against any pikemen and there were times when they melt down in a dozen of seconds.
Archers made very slow progress. I bought them the Odysseus Bow only after the final battle was won, and I think I missed it a bit. (Not that they get it sooner then in the very ending of the penultimate minicampaign, more realistically during the Civil War.)
What I'm satisfied with, is the Auxilia, cavalry and missile troops skill tree, I guess it's a perfection. I was a bit lost when speaking of heavy infantry, and Triarii are a real puzzle for me. At least I was able to reach Sarisa this time, it'll be a shame to not get one. I'm still not sure if I like them. Even for the anti-horsemen duty they are quite vulnerable (due to their slow upgrades and late arrival). I'd love to see how a fully packed and well experienced Auxilia on a level 20 (very doable) and an early (say level 10) Triarii would fare against the same cavalry, namely in the open. I got a feeling that my usual light-only core would be on par with this build, yet it would need far, far less fame for healing and be generally more suited for my playstyle. (Which depends heavily on roguh, marsh, forest, etc.)
Don't ask on any opinion about pin cushion. Throughout the campaign I used them whenever possible, and I guess their effect on morale and experience was minumal. Otoh, they make armies cumbersome, sometimes they melt in few seconds, due to their nature of disposable units (read: no experiences, weak squad types) they are pretty unreliable and they pretty often simply hampered me. I think that javelinemn are one of the better (as they provoke the enemy with javelins and they withstand enemy fire) with Auxilia and Nobles (or Scouts at the very least) in a tow; the first one withstand a lot of punishment when used correctly, the latter chase down enemy missile units. During the final stages I used superior pin cushions in the form of elephants or Legs (in low-casualties battles), but most often Auxiliary Cavalry. Again, these were used mainly for decoy work or against isolated groups of archers.
I won't monkey in gameplay and glitches, we all know about the mismanged kill-the-Legate scenarios or similar stuff. The only thing I'd love to tell is that I really dislike (and if it would be in my powers, I'd definitely change it) how the light infantry squads get the bonus when fighting in water. While I get why they have boni in any other non-basic land (hee-hee...), and I can stand the idea of javelinmen being 100% effective in forests, I still cannot understand how fightnin with a cold water up your shoulders improves your situation and sour comabt style/capabilities/results. This is highly - and I mean it for the real - unlikely and I don't like it at all.

Yes. Yes, it's doable. It's definitely possible to finish the whole Roman campaign without a single battle lost and replayed; it shouldn't be problematic at all, even though I wasn't able to make it through. But yeah, I was very close, and over the course of the campaign I lost only two battles, with one of them being lost due to my failure to concentrate on time limit, while the other one was more of a "mistakes happen" affair.
I'll try some more conventional build in next few days, I guess it won't be "All Wins" run, but at least I expect lots of fun with my Auxiliary Army.

Ok, so after a pair of abandoned tries, I'm back again.

This time I will be more cautious. There's no reason to be stopped during the Men in Black, as long as you're not greedy and play conservatively. Same goes for many other usual chokepoints, except maybe for Etruscan Treachery (and few otehr time limit battles) where there is far less space for mistakes and prudence.

I will build a bit unusual army. I'll share just the post-minicampaign progress without much additioanl info, as this is not going to be a detailed walkthrough, and it is meant to be a diary of my war path, neither.

Neighbourly Quarrels / Latium (the first minicampaign):
As always, nothing special happened during Defiant Farmers or Latin Expedition, not to speak of Sabine Ambush, I just dismissed all units and bought Auxilia. Then for the last scenario Scout the Etruscans I used pin cushion Velites. I won this whole minicam without a single healing.

The Early Republic (the second minicampaign):
I bought temporal Nobles for Aequi Raiders to get rid of Skirmishers and light infantry. Hernici Farmers were defeated with a help of two temporal Militas and a band of Paesant that blocked the second wave; this is the battle where I purchased my second core unit, another Auxilia. Coriolanus' units were lured into the forest by two javelinmen squads. I bought third Auxilia (and also a pin cushion Militia) for Latin Revolt and rushed them into the woods. And I dispatched all the cavalry and spearmen units that Etruscaens at Caere thrown at me by simply staying in mud, while temporal Velites absorbed javelin fire.

Gauls and Latins (the third minicampaign):
I once again bought temporal Nobles for Men in Black, but they made only three overruns. Fortunately my Auxilias were able to defeat the enemy. Gallic Scouts were sent home withut a single core healing. I bought fifth Auxilia for Thirsty Gauls and several pin cushion to absorb the arrows. Same was done during Lingering Gauls, except that I bought another permanent unit, Velites.

The First Samnite War (the fourth minicampaign):
I bought many pin cushion units during this minicampaign, but I also moved further in finalizing my army. I got a complete Velites section now, and I work towards finishing the bowmen department.
Conscript Revolt was won in the forest, similarly to Campanian Allies battle, which was a bit more cruel, as the enemy javelinmen are a plenty. I bought lots of Velites before the battle that was meant to Conclude the War, as I need to absorb javelins and then get rid of enemy heavies. Annexation of Etruria was won in the rough, and I got my first Archers squad.

The Second Samnite War
(the fifth minicampaign):
I build a vast line (supported by many Velites) on my right flank during Relieve Neapolis, with only a handful of pin cushion on left. Battle of Caudine Forks happened mainly in the river, thankfully I was able to keep the fight in water. Battle of Lautulae was fought mainly in the forest and I got my first Auxiliary Cavalry here. Etruscan Treachery was lost as usual, and I consider this scenario a joke. Really, with a tight time limit, enemy needs to be active, not stay on the opposite side of map, masturbating. Then there was the Final Battle and I once used lots of Paesants to eat the javelins.

The third Samnite War (the sixth minicampaign):
I held the forest with Auxilia during the Etruscans battle, while my two Auxiliary Cavalries chased down the enemy Skirmishers. During both the Battle of Sentium and Samnites I used some pincushion units and lured the heavies into harsh terrain.

Gauls and Pyrrhos (the seventh minicampaign):
This is my least favourite minicampaign. It's bloody and the battles are messy. There's hardly anything reasonable I can say about my plans except for the Siege of Arretium, where I held my units in forest on left. During the Battle of Vadimo Lake and later when meeting the Cisalpine Gauls, I just tried to stay in the rough terrain. Both the Battle of Heraclea and then the Battle of Ausculum were real massacres, as the Elephants are extremely hard to dispatch.
I'm glad that my men are through this. Nice change of pace, indeed, but the battles are to hard for my soft army.

I got myself back to the kb...
So, this particular build was pretty interesting, but it stll lacked something. I can't exactly put my finger on it, but there were few factors clearly visible or how to say it.

- the power of five Auxilias can't be dismissed. Their line is very firm and unlike my usual army with lesser amount of early h2h units, this one was pretty resilient.
- otoh, they gained exp. a bit too slower, thus leaving me with a weaker squads in the second half of campaign.
- moreover, the later arrival of missile troops meant they also got fewer experiences and were quite green when I needed veterans.
- although the healing is cheaper, it's not worth it when on needs more robust units, esp. against heavies and/or cav. in the open.
- I don't have a firm opinion on double horsemen; they were useful, but then again the healing added. Moreover when stuck between the pikes, they vanished like a snowflake in microwave.
- I wasn't able to win without a loss, and this is a great disappointment! :) But ok, losing two battles isn't that bad. :-P
- most of the battles were not troublesome at all, but due to the higher number of units than usual (twelve against ten), I gave my Auxilias basic Drill, which I otherwise consider a wasted slot on a small armies' infantry squads.

Things I'd change:
- looks like a specialized anti-cav unit is needed
- earlier Archers are necessary
- two cavalries are not... maybe.

Yes, I like the game... a lot. I think you made very good work with how the RPG and strategic elements are mixed. Also, the command system is amazing. I'm trying to perfect the army, but there are so many unknowns that I may tinker with it for years! :)
