As they are non-japanese names, can't you just convert them all straight to Katakana? e.g. Salian = サリァン , right?

Thank you screamotrance, your comments really helps me. And your knowledge of Japanese really encourage me!
Would you mind if I ask you to join me translating LA(Legion Arena) into Japanese?

And Basically you're right and in fact, that is what I'm doing right now. The point is roman and celtic history is quite popular in Japan,
so there is in most cases someone already translated these words into Japanese using Katakana.
And though Katakana is phonogram, there are slight dfference between people.
So, if you want to translate correctly, I should pay respect to the forerunners and scholars and roman enthusiasts and
should use their words.

And thank you for your kind link.
THough I could not see it, due to browser problem, I guess.

Here is the link to 4 gamers net, PC games information site in Japanese.
And the colum in this links, the columnist talk about foregin(I mean from the standpoint of Japanese) PC games and surrounding topics.
This week, it talk about distant gun. Interesting is the genre is naval battles during Japan-Russo war in 1904-1905.
The only gamehouse which deals this theme so far I know is General Support.

I want someday, slitherineguys appear in this column.

Everythign you've said is correct. All I know is the selling of the words, not the pronunciation, so can't help you with phonetics :(

I'd make your best guess & I think that will be good enough for most people. If anyone disagrees we can always make tweaks later.

You mean spelling, don't you? Either that, or slitherine is a very different business from what I perceived it to be. :P

That's $10 you owe us. You shouldn't have used 'perceived' - it's pricey at the moment...

Cheers

The other difficult point in translating into Japanese

It's pre-battle briefing. It's a mix of explaining situation and commander's intent, his decision, his assigned duties.
Sometimes, these are hard to distinguish from each other.

And I nearly finished, and tweaking a little and checking if there are some unnoticed errors and leftover.

font site, lots of Japanse fonts here.
though it seems most of them are alphabets only. No chinese characters.
http://www.dafont.com/

here is full of Japanese, sorry, most of gentlemen here cannot read, I guess, though sometimes watching design itself is
also amazing, as if hearing songs in foreign language.

http://ohkadesign.cool.ne.jp/wabunfont/ ... isawa.html

Windows XP in Japan has several fonts.
MS Gothic, MS PGothic, MS 明朝, MS P明朝. 明朝(minn tyou) is one of traditional fonts dating back to old China's dynasty.
And I'm wondering whether translating game credits and error message is right or not. In fact, design is altered just by translating some words in credit.

PS
I got copies of eagles series 2, 3, and 4 today. I ordered these around early January. So it takes about one month.
Actually, I'm slow like snail to read in English, and translating is going on, so Optio is still at the Legate's dinner party in the first book.

PS
Prebattlebriefing is beginning to become the problem. Translated into Japanese, the sentences are relatively short, so there are lots of blank space, now.
And buttons tooltip, units descriptions also needs to be brushed up.

PS
now playing and tweaking one battle at a time.

PS
finished second run at hard level both roman and celtic campaign with version 1.0101. Almost all prebattlebriefing text got tweaked.
And starting game manual.

PS
it seems there are some description not featured in real game right now, tough there is a a chance some later patch incorporate into game.
for exsample, I guess currently medal you got after battle is predetermined whether difficulity setting is normal ,hard or very hard.
THough manual suggests there might be some possibility the medal you get varies, depending on your performance.
and as new patch is coming, things bit changes.

PS
translating manual. almost half finished. page 14th. about unit deployment screen. There are some features which I had not used.
For exsample, system save files, last battle seems to be really convinient for me. And I want to start modding scenario.
Currently thinking 80 troops enemy units, high level armored elephants in small open terrain map, and modding celtic archers into slingers
with high concuss, armor piercing damages, and so on.

PS
translating manual, almost 2/3 finished, page 21st, about unit formation. I realized several of images in manuals are in English, for exsample, campaign selection screen, units list panel, deployment screen and so on. So after translating, I have to changes these images.

PS
I find manual in English online. So this really helps me, if my translated version is not so good, then there is a chance some better version
appear. save deployments, load deployments are not featured right now, though, button's space exists. And swamps are not mentioned in
manual, though in games it already exists. And as damages shown in 3 digits numbers(against routing elephants), some of images which did not have English ought to be changed.

PS
finished page 27. command points and so on. I guess I should not mention arcade mode here, it smash what the designer wanted to simulate,
so I did not add.

PS
almost all finished, page 32. though the introduction is still untouched. translating novel is always difficult than manuals. As I played LA so often,
and can guess what sentences really mean, except some damage calculations descriptions. it seems there is a chance scout-cavalry can throw javelins. though, missile-combat in close range is really hard to set it properly work, I guess. when opponents rush into minimum ranges before missile troops shoot, they drop their missiles and draw swords and get into melee-combat. So with the speed of horse-mounted troops and short range of javelin(they throw from on the horse-back, without the help of his foot), there seems to be lots of troubles.

PS
finished all, including introduction. Actually translating introduction is easy and interesting, though the problem is how far I should add words and
sometimes deduct words. As a translator, I should stick to the original words, and retain high-flavor of original sentences, though, sometimes it is really hard due to I don't know enough Japanese words. Humm, I'm borne natural Japanese, thogh my vocabulary is still poor, I should read much more Japanese, that's my conclusion. Well, tomorrow morning, I ought to check my work, including lang.xls.

PS
checking lang .xls and tweaking skill descriptions. as romans fight in groups, not alone, so skills are not personal but gruop as a whole learn and maintain. Though I tend to write something like old martial arts training path.

PS
tweaking item descriptions. During Meiji era, the first national army established, regiment standards are so sacre, you cannot change it.
so some of the old regiments' flags are crumed up and just strands.
http://www.burari2161.fc2.com/hohei10rentai.htm see the the last bottom of pictures. When WW2 ended, army burned almost all regiment flags
so as not to be taken by former enemies. This one is restored later.
well, so I ought to deter litterly english texts, and change a bit.
