V3

Post by RSDPIT » Fri Apr 14, 2017 1:08 pm

Some clarification please

Movement
5) It takes a complete move to place Portable Obstacles. They must be placed within the 1st 3 turns of a game, and cannot be moved after placement.
a. Under current rules (v2) can you place and move ?
b. is it the first 3 moves of both opponents in total or just of the army with the PD's?
c. if once placed they are fixed, do they a) become field fortifications? or/& b) are they available to other troops?
Combat
1) All bases get 3 Dice at impact. (4 for Elephants and Scythed Chariots)
a. This is a serious downgrade of elephants, is that the intention?
2) Undrilled Impact Foot are upgraded if fighting infantry during the impact phase if the BG is 3 ranks deep
a. do this mean at least 3 ranks deep or only 3 ranks deep?
Post Combat
4) A BG that falls to half strength must take a CT unless it has already tested while at half strength earlier this phase.
> A BG will auto-break if it fails any CT while at half strength.
> A BG will auto-break immediately if it falls to BELOW half Strength.

a. the rules now seem to be mitigating against superior and elite troops, typically superior and elites are in smaller units, in fact in a lot of lists elites in particular are restricted often to 2 bases, so now instead of being the vanguard troops they will always have to hide because they can not afford to run the gauntlet of skirmishers or shooting armies, and in fact even in combat they could charge and rout in one phase, potentially taking the rest of there army with them.

Finally when will the list modifications be published

Hello. I should say that while I have been involved with the testing, Terry Shaw is the author.

POs. Under v2 you can place, and then move away next turn. Or pick them up again and then later move off. The intention is the first three moves of the player with the POs. Once placed they remain POs, not field fortifications. They can be defended by any BG, but in practice it'll just be the BG who laid them. Anything else is too difficult to achieve.

Dice at impact. Elephants still get one more dice than other troops so maintain their scariness at impact. Though they will take more casualties.

Impact foot: it means at least 3 bases deep.

Half strength tests. One of the goals of the new rule set is to reduce the advantage of superior troops (and elites, but they are rare). This is one way to do it.

Speaking with Terry publication dates are not yet firmed up but the feeling I get is early summer for the rules, first new list book a bit later than that. Note there will be only three list books. In addition to amendments to the lists there is some condensing going on - to reduce the number of books.

Interesting - I see it the other way. At the moment Elephants get 3 dice at impact. When they fight mounted it is typically 3 dice vs 2 dice if the mounted engineer a single base impact. Under V3 it will be 4 dice vs 2 dice or 8 dice vs 4 dice as the mounted lose dice due to disruption.

Sounds quite scary to me.

I believe the latest amendments give 4 dice to Scythed Chariots and 3 to all others, except when fighting elephants, when you only get 2. Basically, elephants are treated the same as in V2 but poor Scythed Chariots lose out a little.

Anyone ever seen Scythed Chariots in a competition game? Granted they're very much a gimmick weapon but it would be nice to see them occasionally. Perhaps their loss (which is virtually inevitable) shouldn't count towards army break points. They could then be used to try and disrupt the enemy, exploiting any success with a follow up BG...

Their loss has never counted, nor has their existence

As a matter of interest is there a timeline for when V3 with accompanying list likely to be tried out in competition

I've used them in V1. They're cheap at 30 a unit. And they usually die before being pursued. The ideal troops to hold off that enemy unit coming round a flank. Sadly, an entirely unhistorical usage.

Tournament organisers like to say several months in advance what will be offered as rule sets. So it might be late in 2017, might be early 2018 I'd have thought.
