Aghanistan '11 AAR

Post by Guardsman111 »

So, I'm loving this game, and I decided I wanted to share some of my ongoing game with you guys for the fun of it! This report will be 15 turns per post :)

The story begins, historically accurately, with the 3rd Battalion 7th Regiment of the 1st Marine Division moving into Sangin Province in Afghanistan, September of 2011. They took the place of elements from the 5th and 6th Regiments.

Operational map of the area.

As you can see, I have very limited road space when it comes to getting to most of the villages. A convoy is already en route to the small clearing west of Kajaki, where I will set up an FOB to provide support to the surrounding villages. My force consists of 2 Companies, Alpha and Bravo of the 3/7, both with 3 Platoons. The engineer support is provided by Alpha Companies Engineer team, Bravo's engineers staying at Battalion HQ for now. I have support from a Delta Team, but the number of MRAPs is limited due to shortages in the area, leaving me with only two full squadrons of MRAPs. Bravo company has taken these two squadrons and the engineer teams to where the FOB will be, Alpha company has been left at base with the Delta team to train ANA ASVs. Due to the shortage of MRAPs, one of Bravo's platoons had to be transported by truck.

Bravo met no firm contact on its journey, but did clear a few IEDs. Marines checked in at the villages on the way, Spin Wam and Kajaki, but there was no intel to be gleaned this time. The journey was such a long one that most units were nearly out of fuel by the time the FOB was set up. It does not look good. I decide that I am going to focus my attentions on villages to the west of the FOB, due to the immobility caused by the amount of mountainous terrain. Anything to the east will have to be a concerted effort due to the distance required to travel there. It will either be helicopter or nothing. The first day was rather uneventful, as the vehicles refuelled. A foot patrol was sent out to Kajaki, where they spoke of a village they saw as hostile farming Opium to the west. Alpha would look into it the next day. The first ANA ASV unit arrived and was made combat ready, and a Blackhawk was requisitioned to carry the Delta team to the FOB where they could train ANA infantry.

Early the next morning Alpha's 1st Platoon mounted up with the ANA and head to Khel, the village reported to have Opium crops growing. Unfortunately, they hit an IED, and despite the US taking no casualties, the ANA did lose a driver and a gunner in the blast. The unit is recalled and 2nd Platoon is sent out on foot to cross the mountains. It will be several days journey, but the area is deemed relatively safe after scouting with drones. Bravo is tasked with visiting the nearest villages, Angoor Ada and Kabul, but due to lack of fuel only the MRAPs are dispatched. 2nd Platoon reaches Angoor Ada with no problems, however after dismounting 3rd Platoon activates an IED, injuring two marines. The platoon is immediately ferried back to the FOB, where an emergency aid station is set up. After immediate triage, the two casualties need to be airlifted back to HQ via the Blackhawk. The engineers get to work building a water tower in Kajaki, which the villagers are pleased by. As night begins to draw in, Alpha's 2nd platoon approaches an Opium crop, in the foothills of the mountains to the west. They destroy it, and set up camp for the night.

Bright and early the next morning 2nd Platoon continues their route to Khel, and stumble across a second Opium crop, which they also destroy. After the casualties of the day before, the engineers are dispatched to Angoor Ada with heavy escort from 1st Platoon and Huskeys. They are ambushed twice by Taliban fighters, once on the route and once as they approach the village. The first attack was driven of by Mortars from the FOB, with suspected casualties for the Taliban. No marines were injured. The second ambush was fought off by Marines, with several confirmed Taliban killed. Once in the village, locals gave information on a Taliban camp in the hills to the south, which were scouted by drone. A 500 pound bomb dropped by an F-15 destroyed the camp, but there were no confirmed kills due to the distance.

After setting up the water tower in Angoor Ada, 1st Platoon led the way back to base in the MRAP, confident there would be no more IEDs on the road. They are again ambushed on the route back but succeed in fighting off the attack and killing several Taliban fighters, again sustaining no casualties. They make it back to the FOB with no other contact, with the engineers and the husky squadron in tow. Back to the west, Alpha's 2nd Platoon enters Khel, but the villagers are uncooperative and openly aggressive towards the marines. They search the area for IEDs and continue further south towards Mandata. They are dropped supplies by a C-130, and camp for the night just south of Khel. At the HQ a MARSOC team arrives, and they begin training of a second ASV team. Intelligence reports a rise in the number of Taliban Cadre's in the area, a result of the coming election.

This draws us to the end of our first 15 turns, will report further when I complete more :)

Sadly the save was corrupted around turn 20 for some reason, so wasn't able to complete this :( put the error report on the forum though so hopefully it will be fixed.

I really was enjoying that game because of the difficulty resupplying the FOB. Shame that its gone, but I may do another one :)
