What we'd like to see in DLC AO40 and 41...

Post by adiekmann » Mon Sep 21, 2020 8:22 pm

Many of us have criticized the content of SCW and AO39 AFTER the fact. Now, I am sure (well, guessing really) that the basic outline of AO40 is probably already done. But for the rest of us mere consumers, I thought a post before its release would be in order, even if it doesn't change anything (but you never know!).

What specifically would you expect or like to see in the 12-16 scenarios of AO40 and 41 contain?

1940, it's pretty straight forward. You have Norway and France/Low Countries. Which specific battles/operations would you like played out? How should it be different than PC GC? How many maps/scenarios allotted to each area? Or any other aspect that comes into question AFTER the release of a DLC for this game.

1941, that's I think much more difficult. LOTS going on that year. But still, same questions.

However the Campaign or Scenario is eventually developed... it should always give you the sense that the ensuing conflict situation being portrayed... has been adequately covered enough so... so that you don't feel or realize that significant enough details have been left out!.

You should really end up being completely satisfied with the developing story-line of the premise or situation being detailed in that conflict!.

I want to go to Undisclosed Location: CZ.

EDIT FOR FORUM GAME:

Official DLC 1940 Prediction Game Rules:

1. Submit a prediction for what you want, or think will be, in DLC 1940.
2. One idea per person. Kondi gets 2 because he inspired the idea. Only the higher voted Kondi square counts, not the sum of both.
3. If there are enough unique people, and unique predictions, I will build a board in a new thread. And there, people can place up to 2 extra bets on up to 2 extra squares.
4. Grand Prize winner is the person who made a prediction that has the most bets on it, AND ALSO turns out to be a true prediction. Grand Prize winner gets a in game pre-set force leader named in their honor.
5. Once the board is full and betting begins, no more new ideas will be allowed on the board. FIRST COME FIRST SERVE.

Voting phase rules:

1. Each person who has a square gets 1 automatic vote... for their own square.
2. Each person who has a square gets 2 extra votes, to place anywhere they please. Example, FunPolice's 3 votes might be on 3A, 4A, 3B (self vote automatic, two extra votes his choice)
3. Anyone who want to play but doesn't have a square has 3 votes to scatter as they please. 1 vote on each of 3 square, 3 into one square, whatever.
4. Piling multiple votes into the same square is allowed.

Contest begins now. As soon as I have enough squares, we'll move on to the second part of the game. And then that will run until some kind of formal announcement reveals... whatever it will reveal.

My official board building tracker:

I was watching several of the YOU-TUBE VIDEO's dealing with the 'Channel Islands'... or maybe I just only read it instead?... anyway!... the 'Commanding General' said something to the effect that... "Why wasn't a fully functioning Air-Base' constructed here on the Islands?"... he also referred to the analogy that of... that the islands were like a 'Land Based Air-Craft-Carrier!'.

Location. Being on Jersey or Guernsey isn't very far off from being on Cherbourg. And being an island naturally comes with dramatically increased logistical problems.

I hope we see a set of scenarios (likely optional) that involves the Battle of Britain. Could even have a scenario where you raid the British coastline to test for sealion and mess up some radar stations (could be a good place to hide some caches of heavy British tanks or something like 17 pounder).
A scenario entirely dedicated to Eban Emal and the paratroopers capturing it could be a cool thing like Forbach was in 1939.

Something else I kind of hope we start seeing are more big scenarios like Fall Weiss that came with the base game. A Fall Gelb would be really cool as you got to do the entire French campaign as one big scenario.

Otherwise I hope for more stuff like hidden caches, prototypes/gift units, and all that other stuff.

Interesting...

So far a lot of mention of smaller side operations. However, I know there will be lots of complaints if at least some of the big stuff (Dunkirk, Sedan, Narvik, etc.) are not included. But this is the same question (challenge) about designing these that I thought about before even the first DLC was released: How do you keep it fresh but not skip over the major/famous battles/operations?

1941: I think maybe Yugoslavia, Greece, and Crete could/should be combined as their own separate DLC if expanded upon in finer detail. Same with North Africa.

Barbarossa...same questions/challenges as 1940 France.

Kerensky...I do not envy you!

I fully expect to see the big boy battles. I am just offering alternatives to scenarios like securing all of France or assaulting the Maginot line from its rear. I do think some form of simulation of the Blitz would be interesting. I very much favored the western campaign in the previous game because it covered battles I had not played before. I enjoy the history of the game but also love to see counter factual what if’s.

[Ret: "Eban Emal" I can't correctly remember the details... but here goes anyway!... This fortress was taken out of commission by as little as 6-German Paratroopers in a matter of minutes... mainly by using 'Explosives'.]

Yes!!!... I feel 'Pain' for 'Kerensky'... he likely has a limited budget!, a time-table to live or die by!, and has to restrict the amount of 'Scenarios' in each Campaign' to fit into a package that is relevant to the task at hand as well as being affordable for the consumer!.

On top of all of that... he has to put up with all of us unreasonable persistent 'Grumblers/Grognards'... who 'Want-Everything!'. So!... it won't be easy... but perhaps we should all try to give him the respect that he deserves and cut him a little more slack!.

Eban Emal was assaulted by 78 paratroopers and was taken out in only a few minutes but seeing how PzC 2 is able to be ahistorical is could be interesting to have a scenario made around it. Maybe having your main army outside the fort while numerous fallschrimjager landing on the inside to help smash the heavy defenses.

Yes!... more than 6 Paratroopers assaulted the Fortress. But it was only those 6 Paratroopers who were the only ones on the top of the Roof of the Fortress that actually rendered it unusable.

I can tell you the first draft completely skipped Norway, had no Sedan battle, and also left out Dunkirk because we have seen those places time and again.

The first draft did not survive it's encounter with forum feedback.

Were there multiple scenarios that involved the conquest of Luxembourg? Or were they replaced with a massive slugfest on the Channel Islands where upon the Germans discovered to their surprise a large British garrison manning an extensive network of tunnel fortifications that they had contracted the Japanese to secretly build in the early 30's?

I hope for more captured planes. :D

But what could be fun is some "Sealion Training" mission vs Italians. Also Channel Islands could be great, i have been on Guernsy and Alderney and they are nice places to visit. And here we could visit them as part of Wehrmacht Traveling Agency. :D

Also battles in channel where my Stukas and Sturmovik Squadrons rip apart some merchant vessels as prepare for Sealion invasion could be nice.

Also some invasion to Netherland could be cool, especialy Battle for The Hague where you have to rush to save troopers there.

Yugoslavia would make sense, but not in 1941. as Axis basically stormed through it. It would make sense after they capitualted, as there were big war going on, communist partisans, chetniks, ustashe. Plus, some german and italian divisions. A lot of battles. Yugoslavian sector in WW2 is worth of separate DLC.

I wonder if you found any new battles in France at all, because the French campaign was shown in great detail in PzC 1 GC (even the Maginot Line assault was there), you could possibly focus on the activities of Rommel's division and not the Guderian corps as before, but Rommel already was in many other games
Battle of Hannut is the one which comes to my mind right now, and maybe fighting in central Belgium with BEF on the Dyle line, thats all
The next DLC will only cover the Italian-Greek war, Op. Marita will be in the next?
