UPDATED

Thanks for everyones amazing input. Even those of you who didn't actually read the original request properly .. thanks for the effort! :D

So we've still got a few missing units we could do with help on and I wanted to narrow it down and prevent anyone wasting their time.

What I'm currently missing is

4x Italian Army

5x Soviet Navy
5x German Navy
5x Italian Navy
5x British Navy
5x US Navy

More Russian and German Infantry would be useful.

I don't think the Navy Heroes will be required for first release but I expect they'll be hard to find so would like to start hunting for them now.

I have to emphasise again .. these have to be verifiably Public Domain, preferably CC0. If you cannot show this then you're wasting your time and we don't want you doing that.

NOTES:
- We cannot use Bundesarchiv photos. Their CC-BY-SA means we would have to give the game away for free because the images will be cropped and coloured.
- Neither can we use images from ww2online.com unless a particular images legality can be verified.
- Same goes for many other big name organisations - Getty, Time, Life, Alamy or any other magazines or agencies that claim the rights. This includes most of the images in the photosnormandie flicker stream - including the US National Archive images which are CC-BY-SA
- Just becasue a third party website says a picture is public domain, it can't be taken as truth, need to check source.
- If no license information is provided there's no point in posting it.
- CC0, Public Domain, Copyright free .. these are usually, but not always good indicators.
-As much as possible we do not want well known pictures .. so no pictures of the SS guys in the Ardennes, no well known Knights Cross, Victoria Cross or Medal of Honour winners, no famous aces. The point is we just want your ordinary squaddie who does something extra ordinary.
- No pictures of SS at all since we just end up having to paint out their insignia, it looks silly and makes people upset.
- Tanks, while having lots of personality, and making for some undoubtably awesome and striking pictures, aren't the kind of portraits we're after.
- And dogs. We don't need dogs. But thanks for putting a smile on our faces.
I- 'll be using a lot of Australians as RAF .. mostly because they flew in RAF squadrons from Britain. So technically they're classed as RAF crew on secondment ( My Grandad served with Canadian crew in a British squadron in Burma) so seems reasonable. And the pictures are free to use.

Just to show how difficult copyright question can be:

The site https://www.worldwar2.ro has a plethora of information about the Romanian Army in WW2: Organization, Order of Battle, Units, Weapons, Operations, Generals etc. I'm sure that if you contact the authors they can give you more information about the usage. ATM the site states only for private use, but more for being on the safe side probably. All photos have a source mentioned, that can be contacted, if need be. Besides, it's a good one stop site for information on the topic. Even if they charge something, it's worth trying imo.

On the contact form they state: This site is the product of the authors' interest in military history, in their spare time.

Been there.

If you check on the bottom of the homepage it say:

"The information and photos on this site are for personal use only"

you quoted my post entirely, but overlooked my suggestion:

As most of the photographs belong to museums, I cannot imagine that they charge a lot.

I saw this post late, and I may not be sending you what you want, but sending it anyway: below is the link to a website about my father, a bombardier navigator on a B17 whose plane got shot down (on his final mission!), got taken prisoner by the Nazis, and was housed in Stalag Luft 1 near Barth (and not far from the missile sites at Peenemunde). His photo, German POW card, B17 crew photo are there. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 88. Like most of his generation, he never talked much about his war experience until the end, and I never fully realized until after he was gone how much we owe to him and men and women like him in The Greatest Generation. Hope you can make use of it.

@johnnythek
these real stories totally catch my attention. Somehow after a plunge in such a real episode, every game feels shallow. I would prefer so much more to listen to or read a true story, than play a game.

@devs
please put more background information about the conflicts, units and the people into the game

Reasons for some romanian photographs being public domain:
This work was first published in Romania and is now in the public domain because its copyright protection has expired by virtue of the Law on Copyrights, enacted 2004, 2005 and 2006, amended 2010. This may be due to the work expiring under the terms of Decree No. 321 of 1956 prior to the enactment of the 1996 law. The work meets one of the following criteria:

It is an anonymous work or pseudonymous work and 70 years have passed since the date of its publication
It is a photographic work and 70 years have passed since the year of its publication
It is another kind of work, and 70 years have passed since the year of death of the author (or last-surviving author)
It is another kind of work, the author is a legal entity („persoană juridică” - not a person) and 50 years have passed since the date of its publication
The copyright is owned by the author's descendants, and the author died before 1946 (50 pma)
The copyright is owned by someone older than 25 other than immediate family or descendants, and the author died before 1981 (15 pma)
It is a dictionary or encyclopedia published before 1976 (20 years from publication; use {{PD-RO-1956}})
It is an artistic photograph, part of a series, published before 1986 (use {{PD-RO-photo}})
It is an isolated artistic photograph published before 1991 (use {{PD-RO-photo}})

Romanian Fighter IAR-80

Romanian Dive Bomber IAR-81 here Version C
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File ... aripa).jpg
Two more IAR-80:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IAR-80.jpg
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:IAR80.jpg

maybe these should go with the same reason as the wiki-commons:
https://www.worldwar2.ro/arr/?article=743
"Magazin Aeronautic" being a romanian magazine from 1943.
https://www.worldwar2.ro/arr/?article=687
also a magazine from 1943
But you may want to talk to the website authors before using it.

These magazines no longer exist.

Into something completly different.

These are public pictures, but I do not know if it is public domain. But wanted to show just and promote a idea of figures based upon the heroes in the game:

This is a picture of Robert S. Morehouse, a USAAF aviator over Germany. He won the Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster twice for his valor. No need to worry about copyright, as I own the picture.

Hey guys,

Just back off holiday so I'm only now catching up.

I've replied to some of you via PM so you might want to check.

Where the image is good enough I'll try to use family photos, however I don't think the names will be matched in-game as we'll have more names than photos and they'll likely be randomly assigned.

So what I'm currently missing is

4x Italian Army

5x Soviet Navy
5x German Navy
5x Italian Navy
5x British Navy
5x US Navy

Thanks again for the amazing effort.

Thanks.

But waralbum.ru doesn't provide sources for the actual image, just the website. Many of them are from the Dutch National archives which are actually made up of multiple archives with varying degrees of copyright. Many more are from Sputnik, a Russian propaganda/tabloid agency.
