FoG 500 - MRR vs Later Carthaginian

Post by petedalby »

Prompted in large part by Chris Anders’ FoG 300 games we tried FoG 500 last night. We used an ADLG sized table – 48” x 32” and set deployment at 6MU for battle troops and commanders and 12 MU for skirmishers. We left terrain sizes and numbers as per the book. This meant 3 pieces were discarded as they would not fit but we still had a fair bit of terrain on the table.

The MMR list – 2 x FC, 1 x 4 Avg Amd Cav LS Sw, 1 x 4 Unp Jv LH, 1 x 6 Unp LF Sling, 2 x 4 Velites, 2 x 4 Avg Amd Legion, SSw, 1 x 2 Avg Triarii, 2 x 4 Sup Amd Legion, 1 x 2 Sup Triarii + Fortified Camp – 11 BGs breaking on 9

Carthos – 2 x TC, 2 x 8 Avg Pro HF Sp, 2 x 6 Avg Pro MF IF, 1 x 2 Sup El, 1 x 6 LF Jav, 1 x 4 LH Jav, 1 x 4 Unp Cav LS Jav, 1 x 4 Amd Sup LS Sw – 9 BGs breaking on 8.

Both armies had a PBI of +1 and the Carthos won choosing Developed. The Romans had to choose the EF plus opted for 3 x Vineyards. The Carthos had the Village plus 2 x EFs, 2 x Plantations and 1 Gulley.

The Village went in the MRR central sector as did 1 of the vineyards – another vineyard was in the Cartho central sector so the centre was quite restricted with a plantation and a large EF on the Roman right.

Unsurprisingly the Spanish MF were deployed to attack through the EF and Plantation opposite on the Cartho right flank. All of the Cartho Cav and LH were on the left with the HF in the gaps. The Numidian LF occupied the central vineyard.

The MRR deployed their slingers and LH on the right opposite the cavalry wing with the armoured cavalry waiting behind the village. The village was occupied by some Velites. The other Velites were deployed to contest the central vineyard. The MRR had 1 Avg & 1 Sup Legion + Avg Triarii opposite the Elephants and 1 BG of HF whilst the other Sup Legion was aimed at the remaining HF supported by the Sup Triarii. The remaining Avg Legion was in ambush in the plantation opposite the Spanish MF and feeling a little vulnerable.

Despite having the inferior commander the Carthos rolled high to gain the first move. They attacked on both flanks whilst advancing cautiously in the centre.

The early skirmishing shooting was fairly indecisive. The Numidian LF disrupted the opposing Velites.

The Poeni Cav chased off the slingers leaving the Numidian LH and Illyrian LH facing each other.

In the centre the disrupted Velites dropped to Fragged and had to withdraw. The Sup Legion moved up to support them would also be shot to disrupted. The other Velites tempted the African Spearmen into a charge which meant they had to drop into a column. This meant they became an easier target and would drop to disrupted when shot at again later.

The Numidian LH charged their opponents and the impact was a draw with no losses on either side. This combat would last for most of the game, even with the Spanish cavalry in support.

There then followed a fairly poor turn for the Carthos. The Poeni Cav charged the Roman cav – lost a base and disrupted. The disrupted HF column failed its test not to charge and went into the Avg Legion at a double minus and the other HF also failed its test and charged the Sup Legion losing a base and disrupting. Fortunately the Spanish right hook was arriving forcing the Romans to move away from the plantation. The Sup Triarii had to face off vs 1 BG of Spanish to avoid its Hastati being charged in flank. In the centre the disrupted Sup Legion recovered just before it was charged by the Sup Elephants. The Avg Triarii moved to overlap the disrupted HF.

Another poor turn for the Carthos saw the Elephants explode on impact! The HF dropped to Fragged as did the Poeni Cav. The Illyrians were also fragged and would eventually break so the Carthos were down 4 to 2 at this point.

The Spanish MF then got in a charge vs the Sup Triarii who also exploded on impact. The initial pursuit took the Spanish into the flank of the Hastati who also broke! Suddenly it was 4 to 6 in the Carthos favour.

The Romans were able to rally their fragged Velites to claw 1 point back. The 2 fragged Cartho BGs also broke allowing the Armoured Roman Cavalry to pursue into the Unprotected Spanish Cav which would bring defeat for the Carthos.

Final result saw defeat for the Carthos with the Romans losing 5 of 9. It was a cracking game which could have gone either way as you would expect with this match up. The game lasted less than 2 hours from start to finish.

We’re going to try a couple of Book 2 armies at 500 AP next week. I’ll try and remember my camera next time.
