Campaign changes?

So after losing a battle I now get reinforcements and have to try again.
How does this exactly work?
I have half dead formations, did the enemy get battered as well?

If you inflicted losses on them in the battle you lost, then yes. They get what ever they had left at the end of the battle. You get whatever you had left plus fresh units as reinforcements.

Of course, you don't have to fight the new battle, with damaged units. You can, if you choose, revert to the previous campaign stage and fight the previous battle again.

Ok, I like this feature. Doesn't feel like cheating to go back anymore.
