Field of Glory II - The Wolves have arrived

Post by Daniele »

"Horses ramp high and rock and boil / And break their golden reins,

And slide on carnage clamorously, / Down where the bitter blood doth lie,

Where Ogier went on foot to die, / In the old way of the Danes.

"The high tide!" King Alfred cried. / "The high tide and the turn!

As a tide turns on the tall grey seas, / See how they waver in the trees,

How stray their spears, how knock their knees, / How wild their watchfires burn!"

G. K. Chesterton – The Ballad of the White Horse

A new installment for Field of Glory II is coming and it is “darker” than ever. Wolves at the Gate depicts the epic struggles that newly forged European kingdoms had to face for their survival during the “Dark Ages”, a long period of recurrent conflicts that eventually gave birth to Europe.

This age was marked by the volcanic expansion of the Umayyad Caliphate and its fights against the Byzantine Empire, the last bastion against the Islamic advance in the middle-east. In Europe, Charlemagne, King of the Franks, and then crowned Emperor of the Romans, built the foundations of the Carolingian Renaissance and the beginning of the Translatio Imperii in the West.

But no-one was prepared for the endless waves of ruthless and merciless raiders and warriors that from the end of the eight century onward ravaged almost the totality of the Continent and the Mediterranean. Christendom’s towns and holy places were in constant danger from the depredations of the Vikings and Magyars, as well as the on-going Saracen threat. The Vikings were to carve out colonies in Ireland, the Danelaw in England, Normandy in France and the Kievan Rus in Russia. The Magyars were eventually to cease their raids and become the Christian kingdom of Hungary.

The Wolves have arrived. Is this end of Christianity, or is it just the birth pangs of a new world order?

"74 new Quick Battles"

I feel a little guilty as I've always preferred Custom Battles and have rarely used Quick Battles :?

But 76 new army lists? Oh baby!

Excuse my ignorance but who are the British 600-1030 AD? The game lists Anglo-Saxons, Irish, Scots and Welsh for the same period.

I'm surprised no one commented on the Bomb capability in the product page image yet.

Now I see why you said to wait on a refinement to the Dailamites until this expansion, they are their own army list.

Looking forward to this.

Looking forward to Umayyads vs later Byzantines and later Sassanids. From the product page it seems that the Byzantines will finally have mixed units of melee troops and archers, which is great. The naffatun armed with bombs (?) will be interesting, I assume these will have far better shooting POA than the other weapons we have now.

Also cool to see more variety in the European armies: most current army lists only contain warbands and/or armored lancers. Though it seams that the many average spearmen/heavy weapon troops will not have a good time against warbands, should they meet up.

Which lists would you use to represent the armies that fought in Tours?

Interested to see what a Frankish army would look like at this time. Also, curious to see how longbows and crossbows are represented; and perhaps caltrops may be important.

Certainly the Frankish 600-750 list for the Franks.

For the Muslims, probably the Arab (Umayyad) list with Moorish allies.

Announcement will be soon.
Why there are no Slavs in the armlists?
There are Serbians, Croatians, Moravians, Polish, Rus. The Early Slavs are already in Age of Belisarius, and their list does not change until the 9th century. There are also Slavs in Avar and Bulgar/Bulgarian lists.
