Galatia (Ludendorf) defeats Germania (PaulMcNeil) 28-54%. 17% Attacker Casualties. Province 7 falls, no attacking armies lost.

The ferocious German lancers fell upon the Galatians as their left flank emerged from forest. Uncatchable German archers brought down hundreds of Galatian warriors, and the weak Galatian chariots were rapidly put to flight by the much more modern German lancers. This left the Galatian left flank in very bad shape, and a hole began to form in the line as lancer charges shattered several centre-left warbands. Despite this, the deep formation of the Galatian army and the availability of reserve mobile elements, as well as the bravery and valour of the outnumbered Galatian skirmishers and the sheer size of the overall force, allowed the centre and fractured left to hold until the formidable Galatian right could orient itself to respond. A German flanking force arrived late in the day, but forests and the Galatian skirmish foot waylaid them, and the despite facing a foreboding disadvantage on impact, the deep, sturdy Galatian warbands and their agile North Gallic allied cavalry were able to grind down the outnumbered lancers and put them to flight.

The battle leaves Galatia in charge of part of Germania.

Galatia (Ludendorf) defeats Germania (Morbio) 24-49%. 17% casualties for Galatia again. North Skythia falls, no attacking armies lost.

The Galatian advance around the Pripet Marshes of Northern Skythia was immediately met with the foreboding geography of the region. Galatian armies lost supplies and men traversing the bogs, forests and valleys of the wild region. Compared to the conditions of Southern Gaul the Galatians were used to, this was a wild, savage realm. As groups of German skirmishers began to emerge from the trees, the Galatian king began to draw his soldiers up into battle order.

King Ludendorf was an experienced campaigner within the lands of Gaul, but this was his first battle outside of his native lands. His army was formed up into the Galatian cavalry trap, with the meagre Galatian skirmishing arm out in front, the weakest and least trusted allied warbands just behind in a thin screen, and a formidable mixed formation of elite Galatian foot and allied Gallic armoured cavalry behind them; it was this final line that formed the true strength of the Galatian army. This formation had been specifically designed to combat the massed lancers that Germanic and Gallic foot armies traditionally struggled against... but it was also designed for the open plain. As the Germanic archers advanced in a great swarm, pelting the formation with arrows as they went, the Galatians struggled to advance and maintain their good order. Soon bands of isolated Gauls and cavalry were being shot to pieces.

Despite this, the Galatians advanced, the Gallic warbands providing cover to the rest of the army and the cavalry and skirmishers moving up to support any warband that lost cohesion or took particularly heavy losses. Despite one warband breaking, the Galatians began to get the better of the arrangement. As the Galatians advanced, they came to a large, foreboding forest that blocked the way north-west. Rather than try and traverse this dangerous terrain, Ludendorf opted to split his army. He took one half west and the other north. Both would continue to fight the German skirmishers and both would converge at the other side of the wood. German lancers had been spotted going in that direction.

At this point, a detachment of Galatian warriors had taken dangerously heavy casualties. As cavalry and chariots drove their harassers off, they decided to retreat south and take shelter in nearby woods. The Galatian king had spotted a group of German lancers waiting in ambush in nearby forest, and the northern Galatian detachment managed to surround and annihilate them as they tried to break from the trees. It was at this point however that the entire German army emerged and drew up to attack the weaker Galatian western army!

The Galatian army formed up quickly into an improvised shield wall, the ends of the formation curving round to refuse the Galatian flanks to the deadly lancers. The section's cavalry were kept in reserve. The Germanic lancers launched repeated charges up the hill to try and disrupt and smash through the Galatian formation, but the Galatian infantry held firm. One warband broke, but reserve cavalry, though badly depleted from the skirmish, managed to move up and plug the gap. Galatian horns and shouts between the groups of Galatian skirmishers operating in the forest signalled to the northern section that the western half needed help. After mopping up the remaining Germanic archers, they set off at a forced march.

Unable to breach the front of the western formation, sections of the Germanic cavalry attacked the resting Galatian foot to the south as they tried to fight off the remaining German archers. After a moment of cowardice from the Gallic cavalry, who retreated away from a well-timed charge by Germanic horse archers, the German lancer cavalry slammed into the backs of the weakened Galatian foot. Reduced to almost a quarter of their former number, the Galatians finally broke. This did however free up the remaining Gallic cavalry to reinforce their Galatian allies on the hill, and they were able to tie up and even begin to surround the outnumbered German lancers.

Eventually, the Galatian northern army arrived. Disaster almost struck when a unit of Galatian foot suddenly broke and ran; despite personal intervention by the Galatian king, his warriors still buckled and fled. This almost led to the reinforcements breaking, but the remaining units held together despite disruption and ultimately, the exhausted German lancers were ground away. The battle ended with a Gallic cavalry and chariot charge that smashed through the German line and put the entire army to flight.

Thanks to Morbio for a great and challenging game.

I got my battles mixed up. :( It's corrected now, but the first battle with paulmcneil was Province 7, and the second with Morbio North Skythia.

Well, it looks like I'm up against it in my battle for Western Greece. If ever there was a corridor of death for a hoplite army then this is it, you can't beat some marsh in front of the shield wall to add a challenge. It could be worse, but if it was then I wouldn't march into it, there's just enough open ground to tempt me... just!

A host of Spanish soldiers lands on the Numidian shores and begins a devastating raid along the coast. Raiding and burning every settlement they come across, their galleys are soon filled to the brim with food and treasure. Provoked, the Numidians hastily raise an army to interdict and repel the Spanish marauders, but they arrive on the field of battle to find themselves sorely outnumbered. The Spanish troops, mostly lightly armed raiders, array into loose line screening a small number of more heavily armed foot and horse. The Numidians are hopeful that they can outflank the Spanish line with their cavalry, but the battlefield is too confined and provides them no opportunity. The Spanish advance quickly, confident int their superior numbers, and although the Numidians manage to break through in one or two places, overall the Spanish troops repel them quickly. Surrounded and outnumbers, the Numidians swiftly lose heart, and withdraw from the field. A week later, a meeting between the Numidian king and a Spanish delegate establishes the territory as a tributary of the emerging Spanish Empire.

Spain defeats Numidia (played by Najanaja) 6-42, with 6% total causalities on the Spanish force. Numidia 53 is taken by Spain, no attacking armies are lost.

Roman troops, eager to reclaim lost legionary eagles and to restore Roman prestiged, disembarked from their naval transports to assault South Rome. Supported by bands of partisans eager for freedom, the battle was one of maneuver and skirmishing with a mighty clash of horse and rampaging pachyderm as the infantry of both sides refused to to engage. In the end, fortune favored Rome; Roman legions have liberated South Rome from the Carthaginian invaders, 40-14% with 7% casualties. Thanks for a great game.

A great and fun match. I called it a draw too because night fell and I thought I had left my push to late , but when I when to get some screen captures I noticed the game called it a glorious victory.
So can I check if this counts as a draw or if it is a victory. Image

Anyway expanded report.
The Pyrrhic forces were faced with two woods and not a lot of visible Romans.
The pike occupied the hill A while the lights when to scout the woods D and C. Quite a scrap broke out between the lights and the velites. Meanwhile Roman irregular tribal allies where seen moving in Wood C. Some Italian foot were sent to deal with this along with some supporting hoplites and cav.
Meanwhile the main body of Roman forces was discovered in woods D. Elements of the force sent to C where diverted and the remaining Italian foot where dispatched to the woods where the victorious lights engaged in a vicious if losingbattle with the roman medium foot. covering the withdraw of roman heavies from the woods. The pike and the roman heavies engaged in a dance advancing and withdrawing across hill B.
With their support finally arriving the Pyrrhic mediums drove the Romans from the woods. Before a disastrous flanking maneuver from the Pyrrhic cavalry at E was driven back by Elephants and Triarii.
Now teh main lines started to close, on the Pyrrhic left Elephants and lancers helped destroy several cohorts thanks to the sacrifice of the Galatians.
Night fell

Important to note that the best Rome could hope for was a draw after the Pyrrhic King performed a retrograde maneuver with a large force from Hill B to the Safety of Hill A. The Roman battle plan had been to lure Pyrrhic force to Hill B for a massive attack on the Pyrrhic left flank with troops emerging from the woods of D and from behind the hills and ridges of F. The Roman foe perceived the threat before it fully developed to maintain the initiative and force the Romans to retreat to F. The pyrrhic king may be an evil aggressor against art and culture, but he is a formidable foe whose tactics and decision making are now required reading for all aspiring Roman Generals.

Dacians repel Ptolemeic invasion of Thrace, 54% to 65%. Final casualties are 30% and 62%.

In the Asia, Dacians conquer provinces 38 and 39 from Seleucids, 9% to 22% and 10% to 16%, opponent surrendered.

Turn 6 Begin

Post by bbogensc » Sat May 19, 2018 9:49 pm

Strategic Move orders due 5/21 1500GMT

Notes:

* Battle is still pending in Greece26. Check forum for result in the next day or so if this battle is relevant to your strategic move. I do not have a status update from the players to include a provisional result
* Seleucid (shadowblack) is defeated.

* For larger scale battles that end in draw it is important to outnumber the opponent in armies. So, where the defender equals or outnumbers the attacker, then the defender loses armies only based on casualties, but at least 1. If the attacker outnumbers defender, then defender loses all armies and the attacker an equal number. If the attacker sends in more than 4 armies and loses, the extra return to the originating province. If the defender has more than 4 armies on a province and loses those armies are eliminated.

This battle will almost sure result in a draw, leaving Dacia in control of a province.
