Re: Chaos Tourney II
Karvon (Carth Han Africa 202 BC) defeated Challenge1 (Median 836 BC) 43-11 for a 4-0 win.
A deep stream ran across the field with a large patch of rough ground marking a division from our right and center. A large woods and rough ground secured the right edge on our side of the stream. We deployed most of our Spanish and Italian foot opposite that rough ground with our African spear and Gallic warbands lined up to cross to the right of that. Our light foot supported by some light horse we deployed in the woods on the right. Most of our light horse and horse we deployed to screen our left flank. A pair of elephants formed up in the reserve. The Medes deployed their massed medium spears opposite the same large rough patch. A few horse archers were deployed to secure their left. A large band of horse archers were deployed on their right.
Our plan was to use our light horse supported by some horse and elephants to delay the Median horse archers. Our Spanish and Italians would clear the rough and our Africans and Gauls would sweep around and take the Medes in the flank covered by our light foot and some horse and elephant support. The Medes seemed to want to hold the rough with their massed spear while their horse archers overwhelmed by screening mounted and take my infantry in the flank and rear.
Fortunately, for us, our infantry, supported by an elephant and a pair of horse, was able engage and destroy most of the Median foot before their horse archers could shoot down much of our screening horse. We lost most of our light horse and a little of our horse, but managed to break up the attack with our elephant and our own suviving horse, killing a few of them in the process for the win.
The final scene...

Re: Chaos Tourney II
Challenge1 (Bulgarian) drew with Nikiforos (Welsh)
Both sides agreed on a draw once it became clear that neither side would be able to get the required victory margin. The potentially more powerful Bulgarian army was completely nullified by having to fight in terrain very reminiscent of Snowdonia.

Re: Chaos Tourney II
Karvon Welsh 600 AD defeated TheGreyMouser Anglo-Saxon 600 AD 63-47 for a 4-0 win.
Battle was joined in a wooded mountain valley. A large forest lay on the Welsh left with smaller ones in the center and on our right. Several large patches of rough ground in the center further broke up the field. A small hamlet lay on the far right side of the middle woods. A narrow track ran through the large woods on our left from about the middle winding down to our base line. Beyond the woods on our left was a long narrow open swathe of open ground. In short, there were two wood lined valleys the enemy could advance down, or thread their way along the path through the woods.
We deployed the bulk of our medium foot in the large forest on our left, held back a bit from the edges to prevent easy detection by enemy scouts. A smaller force we deployed in the middle woods and hamlet. We massed our horse in reserve in forest on our left behind our foot but with fairly quick access to the far left flank. Our light foot were deployed along the edges of the woods on our left and center. We deployed our few light horse on the far side of the left woods. Our hope was the Anglo-Saxons would try to force their way down the two valleys where we could potentially surround and wear them down. Once their main forces were engaged we would unleash our horse reserve to sweep up and around their right flank.
The Anglo-Saxon hordes deployed in about the middle with a lot of shieldwall troops backed up by some mounted and dismounted hird. They didn't have a lot of options as their left was walled off by mountains and their right by woods, a lake and more mountains. They ground forward, mostly focusing on the two valleys, but also sending troops down and along the trail through the woods on our left. Some mounted and supported by a couple of foot poked around the far left.
On our right, the Anglo-Saxons slowly surrounded and ground down our troops defending the forest and town. Both sides suffered heavy losses as our medium foot held the upper hand fighting in the trees which compensated in part for the numbers.
In the center, the Anglo-Saxons pushed into the rough ground along the left woods, trying to root out our defenders and flank our troops defending the trail. Again, we traded losses here as we had the terrain in our favor mostly.
On the left, the enemy foot advanced cautiously down the trail through the woods, our skirmishers harassing them as they marched. Fighting broke out as they came into contact with our hidden warriors. This mostly went against them due to the terrain and our superior numbers and positioning. As these collapsed, our troops wheeled right to add their numbers to the slugfest in the center.
On our far left, our skirmishers weakened and saw off some of the enemy horse and foot. As their advance bogged down in the woods and valleys, we sprang our horse from the trees, supported by some of our medium foot and in a short but brutal fight sent the scattered horse and foot fleeing the field. These forces then swept around the left woods and flanked the enemy center. This led to the collapse of the Anglo-Saxons and the Welsh victory.
It must be said TheGreyMouser could've easily just formed up in the open ground short of the forests and waited to see I would venture forth to fight on ground much more favorable to his heavy foot, but he gamely made a valiant effort to drive me out of a fairly strong defensive position to his ultimate demise.
