Re: Late Antiquity; winners post your results here . . .
Congratulations dkalenda!
Anyway, Division A
Geffalrus (Byzantines) defeats harveylh (Roman) 62-37. Good game harvey, that was a hell of a match.
This was an absolutely terrible map for the Byzantines with their focus on cavalry and heavy infantry. The Roman spawn zone had a giant mountain in its center, and much of the rest of the map had streams, marshland, and large rough patches. The Byzantine cavalry wept to see it. Lacking more than a couple medium foot units (of low quality), the Byzantines ceded much of the field to the Romans who advanced bravely down from their mountain. With flanking maneuvers largely out of the question, the Byzantines put their hopes and prayers in 4 units of dismounted lancers and the belief that they could resist the Roman legionary foot. Their prayers were answered. The impact phases passed without disaster, and the superior offensive spears went to work stabbing the legionaries to death. Some units of mounted lancers snuck through to charge the supporting ballistae and flank the engaged legions. The auxiliary forces in the rough ground counterattacked against the Comitanesis and Limitanei, while the Roman cavalry moved around the flanks. The Byzantine regular infantry held out just long enough for the un-engaged Byzantine cavalry units to outflank the Roman cavalry and roll up the infantry in the open. The Byzantine commander was extremely lucky that enough Roman units were caught out in the open to reach 60%, as the auxiliaries and archers in the rough ground were basically untouchable.
You can clearly see the battle line outlined by the bodies piled in the open ground between the rough ground.

oscarius (Thracian) beats IMC (Macedonian) 77 - 52
Successful positioning of elephants proved highly advantageous to my cavalry over his, they then returned to the fray quick enough to allow me to envelop the foe. A good tough game
